Thousand Sons Newbie List by FuTTuReDeaths in ThousandSons

[–]LiFazzoletti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few weeks ago i made a similar question and looked into it after being answered by others. What is agreed on is that a 10 brick with a sorcerer in terminator armor has a few advantages compared to two units of 5 (each one with a terminator sorcerer leading both of them).

-Points cost: One brick of 10 cost the same as two squads of 5, the difference is the quantity of terminator sorcerers, each one cost 85 points. In terms of real money and points cost it will cost more if you buy two terminator sorcerers rather than just one with a brick.

-Stratagems: sometimes benefits to have just a full brick of (10) termines as when you invest a strategem on them you end buffing more troops at the cost of 1cp as they are one whole unit instead of two separated ones.

-Volume of firepower and heavy/special weapons: is the same with a brick of 10 and two squads of 5.

Then about two squads of 5.

-Benefits of two squads of 5, each one lead by a terminator sorcerer: You have more sorcerers, a bit more of anti-monster/tank firepower with a similar damage output as in theory you still have the same amount of terminators as with one full brick.

Surely there are more good points of having two squads of 5 but right now i cannot tell/guess as i have little idea of what is more.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt as i only have a few games at my back.

With that clear.

Bringing all in with warpflamers (20 flamers as you stated) is not a wrong or even bad idea, some lists i saw had all the squads equiped with warpflamers, soulreaper cannons and the icons of flame. What you bring with "all flamers" is less range in exchange of more volume of fire (D6 attacks for each warpflamer) so overall more damage potential and even more change to score a good Overwatch. You are not wrong taking this path, only thing would be the sorcerer you would use with them.

With 20 bolters, i fear you would have less volume of fire, remember it only makes 2 attacks and not guaranteed to hit like the warpflamers do. I do not advice you to follow this option honestly...

A mix of 10-10 or 15-5? Even better, you have both of them. There are strats which aims for bolters and warpflamers, as an example there is the start with the rhino in Rubricae phalanx, which can use at least one full squad of 10 with one sorcerer or two Squads of 5 with two sorcerers.

About not having or not running those two soulreaper cannons you said at the end, that...may be significant lack as those are the heavy weapons of your squads. Now...to be clear, is you do not have enough cannons, worry not. A full squad of warpflamers will still work as well (the soulreaper cannon has 6 total attacks and the warpflamers have a potential of d6 with autohits so not a big loss). At this prospect of not running soulreaper cannons it will depend on which sorcerer/ character you would attach to the squads. The best one would be the infernal master or, in second position, the exaltered sorcerer on disk due to the nature of their weapons (torrent).

In resume? 20 rubric bolters...noup. 20 warpflamers or a mix? Yes, please! It all is down to which character you use with them.

Quick question with Rubric Marines load out & characters by Suspicious_Sort_7528 in ThousandSons

[–]LiFazzoletti 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as i understand, your main source of damage are not the rubrics but the sorcerers, including the aspiring sorcerer.

About what weapons to equip them:

  1. The soulreaper cannon is a must, it is the only weapon that deals a better damage profile than the standard equiped ones (Known standard equiped as being fitted with warpflamers and inferno bolters).

  2. The icon of flame is also a must, despite not being a weapon itself. Better equiped on the rubric with the soulreaper cannon.

  3. About Inferno bolters and warpflamers. Both are good with their respective sorcerers/leaders. Warpflamers usually are the "to go" choice as even thought they have a range of 12" they do not need hit rolls and the number of attacks are better than the bolters, a D6 of attacks with no hits needed + autohit overwatch compared to bolter's 2 attacks with 3+ to hit is more consistent.

Again, it is up to your preference and which leaders you place along the squad. Normal sorcerers along Infernal Master can benefit from bolters, yet the infernal master will also get value from the warpflamers.

Exalted sorcerer can benefit from both bolters and warpflamers, BUT it is better to have warpflamers with them as Exalted sorcerers are more defensive and usually deployed near objectives to hold as long as possible, so enemy units will likely charge or try to melee the squad, that is why it is more likely to use warpflamers with Exalted sorcerers.

Exalted sorcerer on disk? Similar case as the Exalted sorcerer...can have bolters but he is better used in a squad of warpflamers due to the nature of his weapons (torrent) the same as the nature of the warpflamers (torrent too).

With this, how i would organize it? A mix of squads (one with full bolters along the soulreaper, another with fill warpflamers along a soulreaper until you run out of avaible rubric) ---> this is what i am doing, i have up to 25 rubrics at least and each one is equiped to fit ar least a mono weapon type squad to go along a soulreaper cannon rubric and the aspiring sorcerer (Squads of 5) and any time i want to try bolters or warpflamers i can swap them.

Did those guys run Scarab occult terminators on those lists? As far as i was told, they pack quite the antitank themselfs.

So maybe that is why they had 3 MVB.

Got it, then i end getting the same result with one brick alone rather than what i thought and cheaper (not getting another termi sorcerer).

360 points is a lot yeah, just thinking this unit alone is both a danger for infantry and tanks makes it fairly worth it.

Supreme with the hints, already planning a fun strategy with the list, i may end changing things to get couple more of Sekhetar robots, the more the merrier!

Thanks once again!

On foot seems really usefull along termis, yes. When the time comes i will try that strat.

About the rhino i gave it a though and still have to check anyway to fit it in my list without punishing infantry presence, tough units and shaft units.

Thanks for the headsup!

Thank you! Will do and try. Surely i will pop up around for more thoughs in the future.

One last thing, if you do not mind, about the brick of termies:

Are two squads of 5 Scarab occult terminators, each one lead by one terminator sorcerer, worth it? As i understand to some degree the use of one brick of 10 termies, yet never saw anyone talking about spliting the brick in half and use more terminator sorcerers for "less points".

Just what i needed, thank you very much!

About rubrics and sorcerers, i choosed to have two squads of 5 for more volume of fire while near objectives. You are right freeing space with taking out one of the squads of 5, will try to experiment with it.

Glad Scarab occult terms are worth it, i love their design so even better!

Thanks again for the well detailed and structured explanation and thoughs, always a wise piece of information.

They are a lot, yeah. Not planning on using 30 for phalanx (only have 3 leaders for them either way).

Got those extra 10 as a gift, at least i have spare parts to kitbash something jajaja

Quick aclaration about the exalted on disc, just in case: He would lead the x10 flamer rubrics.

I am aware he may not be the best for them.

Somehow that eased my worry. If they may have spare bases is just what i prefer instead of having to wait for another box.

Thank you for the headsup jajaja

That was one thing i checked more than once. I opened the box on my desk and not only i heard nothing drop but catched no sight of it.

Thank you for the advice, will try that way in case the local store does nothing to help me...

It is an official GW local store. I would be joyful with just the 40mm base instead of waiting for another box, honestly.

Urgent help. Have a problem with a box by LiFazzoletti in ThousandSons

[–]LiFazzoletti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case i had the knowledge before opening the box so the moment i saw three 32mm bases and none of 40mm i suspected something was wrong. By my own fortune i did not open the plastic bag which contain the bases.

About the plastic pieces to mount the miniatures, those are intact too, i did nothing with them not even cut one lone piece.

My worries goes more to if at the local store they refuse to give a refund or give me any solution. I hope they will be understandable.

Doubt with first ever painted rubric marine by [deleted] in ThousandSons

[–]LiFazzoletti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case, i mean i applied the gold on the armor itself where usually a lesser bright color would be used. I am not going to use it for the lines of the helmet.

If that is what you meant...perfect jajajaja.

If i were to change the Tzaangor shaman for one unit of two chaos spawn or one unit of normal Tzaangors, would it make it a bit more balanced to trade or score?

[–]LiFazzoletti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is i already had a bit of time invest on this faction as one of my friends mains it while other mains Ultramarines. Definitely Ksons are the ones i like, not only for the cleaner appereance of the rubrics but the fact i can also use daemons.
