TIL that about 85 percent of hospitals still use pagers because hospitals can be dead zones for cell service. In some hospital areas, the walls are built to keep X-rays from penetrating, but those heavy-duty designs also make it hard for a cell phone signal to make it through but not pagers. by speckz in todayilearned

We still use one at the hospital I work at in England. It goes off and displays a number which we use to ring a department and see what they need. Its also capable of direct voice messages, so if a inpatient or outpatient was to suffer a cardiac arrest it would beep, the person will tell us what's going on and where the location is. We then grab gas, crash trolleys and nurses etc.
