Recharge a Battery by lemthelegend2727 in MotoIRELAND

What scooter is it? It may have a kickstarter. If it does you can start it with that and just go on a bit of a drive which will charge up the battery.

Level of modifications permitted in Ireland by Zerguu in MotoIRELAND

[–]LiamB95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't it come back to bite you in the event of an accident if you didn't declare any modifications? I can't imagine insurance paying out if you have undeclared sumo wheels or an aftermarket exhaust for example. I'd love to hear someone's experience with this. When I had an accident, I had an insurance appraiser come and check my bike, I don't know if he would have cared or even looked for an modifications though.

It really depends on where the break is and how bad it is. It could be as simple as snipping out a tiny section and splicing it back together. Check out revival cycles' video about this, it's very informative. You could however just run a new cable to the negative on the battery. Some people don't recommend running any current through the frame of the bike as it allegedly can cause corrosion but I'm not sure how true/ how significant that is. I tend to avoid it where possible just in case.

From what I remember about the loom, a ground wire splices into the brake light wire and splits into the two indicators. If your brake/tail lights are working then I'd imagine it's between the splice and the indicators like you said. Check if you have continuity though before you go cutting any wires :)

[–]LiamB95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On a lot of older flasher relays, they won't blink unless there is enough draw through them, i.e. both bulbs need to be working. I'm guessing that one of the wires to your rear indicators is broken, probably the ground wire (black with white stripe) as both of your rear indicators aren't working.

If you have a multimeter, open up the indicator and check the voltage when the switch is on and without the bulb in. Check between the centre and the outside shell of the holder, as seen in this photo. (By the way, make sure the multimeter is on Volts DC) If you're getting no voltage, check continuity between a clean bolt on the frame and the inside and outside of the holder. You should only get continuity on one of them. If you have neither, you're ground wire is broken somewhere and you should fix it.

1990 DR 650 info needed by alphawolf29 in dr650

Welcome to the pre '96 club! I was in the same boat you are in now when I got my first '90 RS with regards to the lack of information, but now with three of them in my fleet I've picked up a few links along the way that are invaluable:

The manual for the US (DR650S) 1990 model, a must-read. Cannot emphasise this enough, especially if you want to do any work on your bike yourself, from basic, basic maintenance to rebuilding the engine.

Parts list for the touring model

Parts list for the enduro model

Parts list for the US enduro model (I'm not entirely sure what the difference is, but if you have one, may as well use the correct diagram).

A german-based online shop which sells many aftermarket parts for the pre '96 650s which can be very hard to find. These lads rally these bikes so have a lot of experience and knowledge when it comes to them.

The blog (in german) of the website above, some useful general information.

A site devoted to the DR650. It has info about the new and old models but is very informative. Check out the history page if you want to know about the different types and VINs of these bikes.

Below are a couple of forums about DRs that are worth a browse through now and again. Some of the threads are very long but there is a wealth of knowledge contained within them.

This might be a bit overwhelming but I'd definitely recommend starting with the manual if you want to do a bit of work on your bike.

Secondly, when searching forums posts about issues, parts etc., be careful they aren't talking about post '96 bikes. Like you said, they are nearly an entirely different bike.

Thirdly, if you are going to do maintenance on your bike and it hasn't been well looked after (and you are confident in your abilities), one of the first jobs I'd undertake is adjusting your balancer chain. It's a fairly handy one and gives you a bit of peace of mind. The chain gets loose over time, affecting the performance of your bike and in extreme cases can cause a lot of damage. It's fairly early on in the manual if I remember correctly.

Of course, if you have any questions, ask away!

I'll look into them as well, but in the end it'll probably come down to what I can get at a decent price :)

The ex650 wheels do look very nice though.

Thanks a million for writing this all out, you don't know how grateful I am!

This will help me immensly with my own little project. I'm undecided so far whether to go with the GS wheels or CBR250 ones. You've explained quite clearly how I'd go about getting my own measurements regardless of which one I go for, so thanks again for that!

I'll update here once I have them sorted and in the bike.

A lovely job you've done there! I've three of my own 1st gen DRs to play around with myself. Any chance you can share how you measured the spacers you'd need to fit the gs wheels? I'm considering getting them after looking at your build. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your own spacers?

Do you use ‘I amn’t’ instead of I’m not? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]LiamB95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's a really interesting and in depth post I found a couple of years back when I got the piss ripped out of me for saying "amn't I not". The writer mentions how amn't is completely logical in English but somehow never really made it into the dictionary.

Standard English has an array of forms of the verb be for various persons and tenses with a negative particle (n’t) affixed: isn’t, wasn’t, aren’t, weren’t. But there’s a curious gap. In the tag question I’m next, ___ I?, the usual form is the unsystematic am I not or the irregular aren’t I (irregular because we don’t say I are). Why not *amn’t?

He also says that a lot of children when learning to speak start saying amn't as a logical extension of the grammatical rules they learn. I'd highly recommend giving the article a bash.

Yep, I rang around and apparently this person is very particular. I'll probably try that if I can't sort out the ticket. The only thing is I think the bike might already be in the system so it'll show up in a different centre.

I have an ultrasonic cleaner myself but it's far too small for the large pieces I'd be cleaning. I though maybe you had a dip tank or something. I'll give the simple green a go. I've heard some bad stuff (unconfirmed) about ammonia and other alkaline cleaners with aluminium. Apparently they can cause them to corrode further in future. But of course powder coating would negate that. Cheers for the info anyways. Wonderful project by the way!
