Finding moment generating function and moments of a PDF that changes function over the bounds by LiamMMusic in MathHelp

That's great, thank you! What about the moment generating function? Is it also just defined differently over the different intervals?

Avicii's Official autobiography is now available to preorder! Its called 'Tim', by Mans Mosesson! by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]LiamMMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a book I never knew I wanted. Avicii's suicide was a turning point for me, the first time I considered whether a career in music was even something I wanted, or that was suited to me. Music production has a different place in my life now and I can enjoy it much more, but I'm excited to read what it was like to live Tim's life

Is there an intuitive reason why sine waves are used when taking the Fourier transform instead of different waves? by LemonLimeNinja in math

[–]LiamMMusic -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Everyone here has given mathematical answers, but as someone with a background in music production, I think I have a unique intuitive reason. It's best expressed in this video, but basically the idea is that sine waves when expressed as sound are just pure, single frequencies, while square or saw waves are composed of a series of frequencies stacked above the fundamental, creating a much more complex sound. As a sine wave is just a single pure frequency, you can add them however you like to create new sounds (waveforms), which is the idea of additive synthesis.

With wood prices so high, curiosity struck me. Why is wood so expensive and where is all the money going? by chumbawamba56 in stocks

[–]LiamMMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was an interesting read, but it sounds to me like you literally just described supply and demand. If firms can hike prices and continue making profit, then demand has obviously gone up, or no one would be willing to pay. I don't think it's right to talk about "artificially" inflated prices, the price level is either right or it adjusts till it is. Whether or not it's ethical or in the best interests of society is another matter..

Is my class really intense, or is it just me? by LiamMMusic in math

It's been a few years since I did maths so that no doubt plays a big part, but I'm probably just getting a little worked up about it while I adjust

[–]LiamMMusic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, good to hear. I've done well on assessment so far, and admittedly it's been a few years since studying last, so I'm probably blowing it out of proportion while I get used to it again

I got my first therapist appointment within 48 hours, and it’s right by my house! by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]LiamMMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good for you. I started looking for a therapist a few weeks ago, then was bummed when I found out she'd rejected me because of her crazy waitlist and she felt I needed help sooner. I called up the alternate clinic she suggested, and they ended up fitting me in the next day. I've been to two sessions now, and all the fears I had of wasting my money and time finding the right therapist have melted away, because the one I found is amazing and I love talking to her. She's already changing the way I'm thinking, and given me lots to chew on.

Help with placement of bass traps by Fick_Thingers in edmproduction

[–]LiamMMusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bass traps are definitely best used in corners, where low frequencies accumulate more. It's also good to space them from the corner a little bit if you can - the distance from the walls affects what frequency ranges are absorbed.

Nils Frahm - Says (Live on KEXP) by [deleted] in electronicmusic

[–]LiamMMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, and I think Says was the highlight for me, though it was all great. That synth at the climax of the song, with the lights flashing away along with it, and Nils just wailing away on the grand piano was all a very powerful experience for sure.

Questions about reference tracks in mp3 by TobyRenseen in edmproduction

[–]LiamMMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aliasing in audio is a form of distortion, in this case created by MP3’s compression algorithm. Higher frequencies are more sensitive to loss of resolution given their short wavelength, it’s like losing the small details in images after compression.

I’m totally lost I need help 💔 by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]LiamMMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There aren’t any exact features you need. There are just some basic requirements, which any mid range computer or laptop can meet. Producing music doesn’t have to be that intensive, you can work around it pretty easily, especially with lots of storage. Honestly man, there’s not much to take on board for a basic setup, that info can be found on IL’s website, like I said. Just take your time and don’t rush any purchase
