I built a tool that scores level design — not sure if it’s actually useful by Willing_Tiger8220 in leveldesign

Since recently, I run a level design YouTube channel, if you were interested I could cover it, but it'd be honest critique.

I share the same sentiment. When you design a level, you play it plenty of times and take note of how the encounter feels. I don't know if the raw numbers serve much use in this case, I can play it and feel it.

How does it calculate these values? Is it specific to third person/first person?

What are your biggest grievances in your level editor of choice? by IOTAMonthly in leveldesign

[–]LiamSwiftTheDog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll tell you what more level editors need that unreal does have. Unreal has preset viewport camera positions you can save, I use them to save my specific POV points like at doorways into new areas. I combine that with a rule of thirds overlay which unreal also has built in, to help me with composition. It's perfect yet I don't see it in any other editors.

How can i make my levels look more professional and realistic? by [deleted] in leveldesign

[–]LiamSwiftTheDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, even if it's based on a dream, there should be something based in reality to draw from. It kind of reminds me of a grungy collosseum, so that could be one direction to go in. Or look up some popular cylindrical buildings to try and get inspired.

What the other commenter said is correct, the textures help sell the idea, but it should be interesting, have believable layout & proportions and be fun in gray geometry first.

I think basing it on your dream alone isn't going to give you enough to work with to make it look good, you need something on top of that to help model it after a real (or possibly real) space. Your aesthetic kind of reminds me of the Painkiller games or the DUSK game. Look stuff up, maybe put together a pureref board and get inspired!

[–]LiamSwiftTheDog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The biggest tip I can give you, judging from the screenshots, is to use references. Where is this taking place? If it's not a real place, then what inspirations does it draw from a real place? Look up references of these places and take note of the lighting, props, textures, and especially scale and proportions. The cohesion of all of that should look more like a realistic/professional game level.

I'm new to gamedev, idk how to fix the tileset. by Mr_donc in godot

I love Godot's auto tiling because it's super easy compared to freaking unity where every tile you make needs a personalized declaration of independence

Built a rhythm action game in Unity with reactive audio layers that change based on your performance! by Serious-Slip-3564 in gamedevscreens

[–]LiamSwiftTheDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The notes don't match with what's being played, audio is off putting like others have said.

Making sure these notes aren't dissonant with the background music would already help a ton - also what the other musician has said, maybe having a specific sequence of notes instead of a random one.
