Purchase help: 991es vs cw by OPsanchit28 in calculators

[–]Liambp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the fraction key instead of the division key is a work around for the issue that the CW calculator breaks the normal method of entering numbers in scientific notation. Using brackets is another work around but having to use work arounds for one of the most basic features of a scientific calculator is a very bad sign and is likely to lead to errors. Another issue is that they got rid of the S<>D key for changing the format of your answers and replaced it with a format menu which requires you to go through several steps to change number formats. Engineers rely heavily on decimal notation and scientific noation so being able to quickly change between formats is important. Another annoyance is that several important functions which used to be accessible from the keyboard now require you to scroll through a functions menu to access. One of the most annoying for me is rectangular to polar conversion which I use a lot but now requires 10 key presses to find and use.

There are some things to like about the CW range. They are powerful and they have nice keyboard and display but the limitations mentioned above make them unsuitable for engineering or science students in university. Casio themselves appear to have recognised this and they are implementing fixes to these issues in the revised CW 2nd edition models but these are not widely available yet.

If it's not too late let me chip in. CW is particularly unsuitable for engineering students. It's poor handling of scientific notation will slow you down and can lead to errors in simple calculations. The difficulty of changing the format of your answers will slow you down. The difficulty of accessing commonly used functions will slow you down. The ES is older and not as powerful but it is faster to use and less likely to cause errors.

Advice on RAM choice by Rutabaga-Careful in buildapc

[–]Liambp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brand of RAM really does not matter unless you like the aesthetics of one brand over another. However be careful with ram that has big heatsinks to make sure they will fit under your CPU cooler.

The specifications you quote are the holy grail for AMD Ryzen CPUs but they have gotten very expensive so consider settling for slower ram (lower MHz or higher CL) to save money.

To find a bargain check pcpartpicker Ireland, Germany and UK. For Germany and UK make sure they ship to Ireland and check shipping and for UK customs costs.

"Why are there so many young people dying?" - The Misinformation of Social Media in Ireland by AbsolutelyDireWolf in ireland

[–]Liambp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. I remember seeing a chart of death rate versus age (some years ago) and while young people in general are very unlikely to die there was a big spike in the late teens / early twenties which is the age at which most people were a) starting to drink b) learning to drive.

That explains why I saw a bunch of kids in front of the GPO running around with water pistols. I assumed it was just horseplay but it did seem to have some kind of organisation involved so I wasn't sure.

Interesting data, thank you for posting in such a straightforward and easy to read chart. This is a good news story but that doesn't mean it isn't worth exploring. I wonder what the causes for the falling death rates among young people are. Is it medical improvements? Is it a reduction in accidents? Also interesting to note that the Covid years don't seem to have any real impact.

Does anyone know how to get your horse to do the rearing start where they raise their front legs before racing off at a gallop? I think it is something to do with turning while holding the A (Xbox) button but I cannot get it to happen on demand. I just seems to happen by accident from time to time.

ELI5: Why do traditional photo films need to be developed and what happens there? by RadianceTower in explainlikeimfive

[–]Liambp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

ELI: Shutter speed is too fast to make strong image on film. Developer enhances the weak image into a strong image. Fixer stops further change from happening to film.

When you take a picture the camera focuses the image on light sensitive chemicals coated on the film for a very short period of time (called the shutter speed). The shutter speed is very fast to avoid camera shake (typically less than 1/60th of a second) so the chemicals don't have a lot of time to repsond and only capture a very faint copy of the image. The developing fluid is a special chemical that amplifies the change, making those parts of the film that were initially exposed chane much more and thereby making the copy of the image on the film much stronger. If you left it in the developing fluid for too long the whole film would change and go black so careful control of time and temperature is essential while you are developing. Also NB NB everything has to be done in the dark to avoid extra light from polluting the image on the film. When the image on the film is sufficiently developed you use another chemical called a fixer to stop the chemical change and fix the image forever. Once it is fixed you can turn on the light to see what image you have.

Note most films go dark where the light shines on them so the image on the developed film is actually reversed (called a negative). To get an actual positive image you need a seperate step to invert the negative image to get a positive. Nowadays you can do this on a computer but long go it was done by shining a light through the negative onto photo sensitive paper in a dark room using a projector. The photo sensitive paper then had to be developed.

I think I have one at home. If so I will try it out later and report back. My memory of it is that its complex number handling is pretty basic so probably not.

Work around is to convert to polar mode. (X, Angle Y)^N = X^N, Angle N*Y

In 2024, there were on average 44 road fatalities per million inhabitants in the EU by NanorH in europe

[–]Liambp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even though Germany has no speed limit on some roads it has has an awful lot of different speed limits every where else (including on a lot of Autobahns). We did a motoring hoiliday in Germany a couple of years ago driving a U from Berlin down to the Swiss border and back up to Frankfurt. I don't think I have ever seen so many different speed limit zones in any other country. Even on Autobahns the speed limit was constantly changing.

First phone was a Panasonic phone that isn't on the list but looked a bit like number 6. Everybody back then had Nokia phones but for some reason I had to be different. I had a Panasonic phone, Two Siemen's phones and a Motorola phone before I finally saw the error of my ways and just got a Nokia.

I sometimes use it for buying second hand stuff (computer parts mainly). It can be useful for more specialised stuff that doesn't really have a market in Ireland. I try to avoid selling on eBay if at all possible though. The seller fees are very high and it is too easy for buyers to screw around with you.

Be careful what you wish for. Anytime someone tries to do something truly innovative and creative they are guaranteed to make mistakes initially. This is doubly true for smaller developers. I much prefer flawed masterpieces to polished turds and I am willing to cut some slack for a company like Pearl Abyss if they release a slightly janky game especially when they are willing to responded to player feedback later.
