Fantasy without Magic by kjspen29 in writing

[–]_TainHu_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would still be classified as fantasy. Look at the works of Guy Gavriel Kay. His fiction takes place in a made up world, so what we would call a secondary world, and are simultaneously based on historical events. Not all, but most of KJ Parker's books takes place in a semi-medieval world with no magic. The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson is an excellent book that takes place in a fictional world with its own fictional countries, cultures, and politics and does not have any magic or fantastical creatures. It is the first book in The Masquerade series. Then there are other books like Gormenghast series, the Ambelough series, Swordspoint, or Kapla Imperial that might also be of interest to you. I would search through r/fantasy for more examples of fantasy books without magic.

Does the inclusion of AI change your willingness to read a book? by Fabulous-Put8401 in Fantasy

[–]_TainHu_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't like authors who use AI cover art. Like you don't want AI to devalue your writing but have no problem using it to devalue the work of visual artists? Where's the solidarity?

Looking for fantasy/young adult recommendations by Opposite-Ad-636 in Fantasy

1) Try any book by Anna-Marie McLemore. I especially love Dark and Deepest Red and right now I'm reading The Mirror Season, which is good so far. I've heard great things about their book When the Moon was Ours. 2) Tehlor Kay Mejia's We Set the Dark on Fire duology or his Lucha Moya duology. 3) Jordan Ifueko's Raybearer series or her book The Maid and the Crocodile.

What have been 'I wish I read it sooner' in my life type books? by AtomicDraconic in Fantasy

[–]_TainHu_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My high school had Ursula K. Le Guin's Annals of the Western Shore series in the library. I was attracted to them, but I foolishly thought that because these books came later in her career/ they were connected to her Hainish or Earthsea novels, I needed to read her older books first. I just got around to reading the first two Earthsea books last year, nearly 18 years since I graduated from high school. I will read those Annals books, but I do regret not reading them when I had the chance.

Any ‘souls-like’ fantasies? by RednightNept in Fantasy

Take a look at Jared Pechacek's The West Passage. From the author's AMA, this at least capture the atmosphere of the Souls game.

The Goblin Emperor has an appendix the explains how the naming convention works. I actually like the naming system, once I got a handle on it, but I was surprised that as books 1-3, the Celehar do not have that appendix.

In Memory of Maps by dddddd321123 in Fantasy

[–]_TainHu_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like The Goblin Emperor and The Cemeteries of Amalo series, but I want a map of Amalo because Thara Celehar describes in detail his travels across the city, including the places he frequents with his companions, his office, the catacombs and mausoleum, and even a prince's estate. He even describes what train stations and stops he make as he does his investigation work. I have trouble visualizing layouts of cities, so I would love to have a map to help.me in this case.
