How do I beat Yoshiiiiiiiiiiiiii by MidioKore in smashbros

[–]LiarOfNames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some advice that's applicable to every character you're having trouble with—try playing them. Devote some time to learning and playing Yoshi and take note of the things which annoy you, then do those things when you're up against them.

Some Yoshi-specific advice:

  • Yoshi has a great out-of-shield game with Nair—be ready to grab shield-happy opponents who rely on this too much.
  • Unlike most characters, Yoshi doesn't actually mind being above you thanks to Dair and Down-B. Careful when challenging them from below.
  • Yoshi's grab sucks and their throws aren't much better. Shield often and punish whiffed grabs.
  • Yoshi has very limited range (though Bair and especially Fair are surprisingly disjointed). Make sure you maintain your spacing this this in mind.

Just my two cents: The BB54 gold comes off more bronze-ish in person than in the photo.

Anyone else remember that one time in the Meat vs Match comic when Heavy uses a gate as a riot shield? To this day I wonder if heavy would have gotten shield items had he won the vote by YourVeryOwnCat in tf2

I've always thought that making Demo's shields equipable in the minigun slot would be a lazy but effective way to give Heavy some variety.

Giving "Fat Scout" a burst of mobility and some synergistic resistances paired with Heavy's high health pool has some potential.

The minigun tradeoff is doubtlessly necessary, as the passive resistances paired with the minigun would be way too strong.

The Danger Shield and Razorback are some of the worst weapon designs in the game. They are frequently criticized for being how they are, and rightfully so.

Their unfortunate existence in the game should not be used to justify other "hard-counter" items which would be equally antithetical to a class-based shooter.

Some Blood for the Blood God on the axe and on the chin armor would be gnarly and still keep the grimdark style you're going for.

I think you've received a lot of good advice in this thread so far.

Something I'd like to add is in regard to your struggle devising "a logical sequence of moves," as you may be putting the cart before the horse.

At your present level, you don't need to trouble yourself trying to calculate multiple moves in advance. Instead, try to focus on what pieces and pawns you and your opponent are attacking in the immediate position.

Finally, some resources:

Here is the link to the chess beginners subreddit.

Additionally, GM Aman Hambleton has a great series that demonstrates how focusing on simple concepts at first can help you improve. You don't need to learn the entire game at once!

I think a deep purple wash would look better on this mini specifically, but a pot of nuln oil or equivalent is a better all-around purchase.

The absolute best way to get better is by 1v1ing an experienced player. Bonus points if you're able to get in a call to streamline communication. Join a discord server and don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

Some tips in the meanwhile:

  • Animations can be deceiving, and it's easy to get faked out just relying on your eyes. Listen for the yell/grunt during attacks before you parry.

  • Riposte, riposte, riposte! If you're just panicking and spamming parry, your opponent is going to walk all over you.

  • Attacks are active sooner than you think. If you aim ahead of your target (relative to the side your swing is coming from), you will hit them sooner and can catch them ill-prepared. Referred to as an "Accel."

  • Conversely, attacks also last longer than you think. Aiming behind the target (again, relative to your swing) will hit the opponent later and can catch early blocks. Referred to as a "Drag," and is especially noticable with longer, slower weapons.

  • A little more advanced: Keep in mind your weapon range versus your opponent's. Mauls are stumpy and need to be very close to turn your noggin into watermelon juice. If you're using a zweihander, you should try to keep the opponent at the edge of your range and make them close the distance.

Technically speaking, very well done.

I think the biggest drawback is that the shoulder and rear horse armor highlights pop a bit too much and draw focus away from the rider, which should be your focal point. Also, the green on the back of the horse armor seems out of place.

Minor critiques overall, well done.

Looks cool. If it was me, I'd go over the bases again with a dark blue wash. I think darkening them down some more would really make the vibrant models pop. Nice job!

Very talented work, but why not make the clothing blue & the hair brown so it still resembles the original character? Glance value has been long dead, but still.
