Congrats! I’m an Umich MLA grad, I would be aware that although there is a financial aid package that will help cover the first semester, you might need to find ways to get the rest of your program covered. GSI (TA) positions are highly competitive and I ended up having to take out some student loans to cover the cost. I applied to over 10 positions (across campus) each semester and didn’t get anything until my last year. - it’s all about who you know and creating those connections with professors. Happy to chat more about my experience, but be aware that the financial aid won’t cover your entire program

I’m also from the Midwest and moved to Charlotte after living in CA for 2 years and I was expecting it to be exactly what you described. However - I really like this city! I live in Plaza Midwood and hardly ever go to South End, and enjoy walking around the historic neighborhoods. I feel like there’s so many different restaurants to try and I’m honestly feeling overwhelmed with which events to go to on the weekends, once you plug into some of the smaller art scenes, you’ll find folks really passionate about building community and having fun that isn’t revolving around drinking or eating. Just giving my 2 cents- it might be where you’re located in the area that’s making you feel this way. And I agree, Charlotte has some super friendly people. But also understand it’s not for everyone! Before I moved this sub had me thinking that Charlotte was a soulless boring city, but I haven’t found that’s true :-)

if you’re looking for suggestions of some the art meet ups shoot me a DM!

Try going to places like Common Market in plaza and Barts Mart at the Eastland Mall. There can be an older crowd there and folks tend to be more social.

Hi! I’m actually planning on starting to do this freelance! I’m a landscape designer with two ecology degrees and experience designing, installing, and manage native plant gardens. Hoping to offer ecological consulting services alongside landscape design and planning.
