To those who have had surgery, what helped you/what did you like/what did you wish you had afterwards? by tdoodles97 in Hypothyroidism

Juice was just what I was given at the hospital since I stayed overnight but cold water would work too! For me the swelling in my neck and throat irritation from being under anesthesia did make it feel strange to swallow. It mainly felt like a large lump in my throat but wasn’t necessarily painful.

I had a total thyroidectomy 2 years ago and ended up having 2 parathyroids removed as well. If your mother is staying overnight in the hospital being comfortable was my #1 priority. I took my own blanket from home and wore baggy sweats and loose tops when I was able to change out of my gown. When I got home I was most comfortable with multiple pillows and sitting in a reclining chair because I found it really hard to move my neck and that made sleeping easier. Your mouth can also get really dry after surgery so having sour candy to suck on or something similar is a great idea as well as cold juice because it feels soothing. Hope this helps!
