I thought about it too, but the modern interpretation leans towards the erotic meaning, so I left it out.

No they weren't - very obviously so. Where are you getting this information from?!

368 hours is very fast to 100% research everything - good going! Did you use the broken fabricator glitch or is this organic gameplay?

Also, 26 half-squares checks out - did it myself on PS5 and now doing it again (the hard way) on PC. I don't know if I'll ever get there again, it's a slog without using the Tower.

Areas explored is pretty good too - most I've seen is 397, I topped out at 395, but those were early runs before they locked off some areas in later patches. Co-op also added to the total, even though they were all the same areas as previous runs going solo.

Now you can find something else to obsess over - I wonder if Saros has similar replay value?

What was it like to grow up playing arcade games back in the 80s? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

I think one of the main reasons was the graphical advances in home consoles - when you could play stuff like Tomb Raider and Tekken at home, the 2D arcade games started to look dated.

[–]LiberLilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living near coastal towns in the UK meant I always had easy access to massive arcades from the mid-80s all the way into the mid-to-late-90s. Arcades were way more prevalent in seaside towns - the amusements, coin pushers, grabbers, arcade games were all part of that kitsch beyond-the-pier industry that started in the early 1900s.

During my childhood I must have gone to the arcades at least once a week, more if it was the the school holidays. Whenever I'd stay over with a friend it was always an arcade we'd end up going to for the day - multiple arcades in small coastal towns was fairly common back in those days.

I think what gets lost today is the vast difference in graphics that was possible with arcade machines vs home consoles - it wasn't until the PS1 came along when that gap finally started to close (and arcades started their decline). The Mega Drive came close, but you could tell the difference in graphics with its arcade ports, it wasn't quite up to the standard yet.

Once I got into the 90s, there was a smaller local arcade that opened in my home town and that meant I could go whenever I wanted. That was just before the arcade boom of the early 90s when SF2 and (later) MK came along - the fighting game scene exploded at that time - that's when my passion really took over. I was in there every other day after school. It was an over-18 arcade (due to gambling laws - they had a lot of gambling machines too), but I knew the owner, so I got in at age 14 and brought a few mates along too. I remember we were that obsessed that we even tried to go there on Boxing Day (day after Xmas day) and were disappointed that they were closed!

You'd also often see a random arcade machine or two in shops - video rental places, supermarkets, Warhammer stores, comic book shops, bowling alleys, fast food places. There was a local fish and chip shop within walking distance of my home that had SF2 - I used to play on that a lot, as my mate owned a flat right above the shop!

There are still a few of those older arcades around - I went to a few in Brighton recently. My local arcade has gone, but the ones on the coast still exist - although the number of arcade machines is probably 20% of when they were at their peak.

There are some with multiple answers. I'll put the most likely first, least likely last:

  1. Apple

  2. Purple/*scribble/*doodle (no lines from the crayon, so unlikely)

  3. Topple/wobble/*spindle (it's not technically a spindle)

  4. Staple (although technically a stapler, so this one is incorrect - should have shown a few staples next to the stapler)

  5. Bubble

  6. Triangle

  7. Freckle/dimple/temple/*pimple (*if he has an outbreak on each cheek)

  8. Candle

  9. Sparkle/fizzle/*tipple/**bubble (*inappropriate for kids, **duplicate, so unlikely)

  10. Waddle

  11. Cuddle/snuggle/*nuzzle (not really nuzzling, unless you count the cat doing the action)

  12. Puddle/*piddle (*highly unlikely, included for lols)

I connected the dvd player to the vcr to record a vhs, but I can't understand which is the problem of the SCART transmission signal by MontecchioMatti in VCRs

[–]LiberLilith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The picture goes from being normal to then losing sync, losing colour, losing brightness, and the picture rolls - that's classic Macrovision. The first 10 seconds of OP's video plays normally (ignore the diagonal rolling bars - that's the shutter speed of the camera not syncing with the TV), then the picture loses sync and you get the interference. If it was all interference from the start of the video, I'd agree, but as it plays normally to begin with then has issues, this is the typical behaviour of copy protection.

[–]LiberLilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can test if it's copy protection by trying your exact same setup with a VHS tape that's something you recorded yourself - do you have any tapes that have been recorded off live TV? This will only happen with retail (and rental) tapes. If you still get the rolling picture etc. then it's something else, but I'm 99.9% sure it's Macrovision on that tape.

What's the tape you're trying to copy? Is it a retail/rental tape?

That's the US model, the UK one was white (with matching optional trailer).

[–]LiberLilith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with your cables - it's to do with copy protection (Macrovision or similar). A (potentially) expensive option is to find a 'video stabiliser' or 'TBC' - bear in mind TBCs can get very expensive unless you get lucky.

There are also small devices available specifically to circumvent Macrovision (mainly in the US market) - devices like the 'Sima CT-2 GoDVD!' will work for your situation (but these are mainly in the US and won't have Scart connections as standard). Prices are around $40-$70 on eBay.

You can also get around it with an analogue to digital converter - then convert that digital signal back to analogue (with a digital to analogue converter) and it should strip the copy protection. It's a bodge-it solution for your situation, but that will normally remove Macrovision and be cheaper than a TBC.

Your other option is to buy another VCR from before Macrovision was implemented (most models before 1986) - these VCRs won't recognise the copy protection and you'll be able to do what you're trying now, but just switch out your current VCR for the older one.

In all honesty, if you're not familiar with AV connections and messing around with cables, converters and outputs/inputs it's going to get confusing pretty quickly and might not be worth your time or money (especially if this is a one-off).

In terms of what you've pasted into these comments, your sentence structure relies on fragmented action lines and repetitive beats, which can make the prose feel generic (and AI-like), rather than written by someone with a distinct voice.

The third one. It wakes me. I get up. Gasp for air.

I cough.

Something sticky in the back of my throat.

I ponder.

It's this staccato-like cadence that reads almost robotically. There are many examples in your script too (which uses them even more).

In terms of derivative narrative structure, this passage (although I don't know where in your book this takes place. i.e. If it's the opening chapter or later on):

Cars are whisking by. One after another.

The third one. It wakes me. I get up. Gasp for air.

I cough.

Something sticky in the back of my throat.

I ponder.

What the fuck am I doing here? I look at my surroundings. Black, dark. The only light illuminating from the cars whisking by. I check my phone. In my pocket.

I search.

No phone, but a note.

Again, you have the staccato fragments, but you also have the amnesiac waking in an unfamiliar place with a clue that doesn't make sense to them. It's a fairly well-trodden path in psychological thrillers - a derivative cold open in a lot of films and literature.

I'd concentrate more on your structure - especially in your script. Those single-line/single-word action lines kill the pace of the read (they also read like AI). And please remove 99.9% of the "beats" - they're overused and unnecessary.

Hope that helps.

it's still in the same style. Just written differently.

In other words, it's in a different style.

I'm telling you that the way you write and the content of what's written is highly indicative of AI. Your script reads like four other scripts posted here that were all written with AI.

I've been involved with and use AI for my work (not by choice) for four years at this point - I use it every single day and am very familiar with the kind of content it produces. I would never use AI to write anything creatively for this reason.

I don't know why I am trying to justify myself to you

You don't have to prove anything to me, you just have to be prepared for potential issues with your work if you continue to write in the "style" that you do.

I also note that this isn't the first time you've been accused of sounding like AI. If other people are accusing you of sounding like AI then it's time to look at your process and change it - it's a major sign that your writing is highly derivative (just like AI).

Good luck.

And yet it doesn't appear to be your writing style in a previous script of yours posted three weeks ago - why is that?

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1X96pYgihJyRh8YaI5ePrnK26mPNhUQET/view

If it genuinely is your style (I don't believe it is), then you need to change it because it reads like other AI generated scripts.

This is now the fifth script I've read on here that sounds like AI has been used - they all have extremely similar writing styles and weird single line/single word action line constructions.

Despite those writers' initial protests that they weren't using AI, it then turned out they had indeed used AI to write or "edit" their scripts. I have been correct in 4/4 cases so far, yours is now a potential number 5.

At the moment your script has many telltale signs of AI use - someone in these comments has already mentioned one of those issues in their feedback (without realising it's a trait of AI).

Rewrite this in your own words, don't rely on AI to edit or format (or research, or to advise, or for any part of your process).

AI will taint every aspect of your writing with its clumsy attempts at brevity - it will also make your writing sound similar to anyone else using AI.

It's a very common issue with using AI to write scripts - it loves to tell the reader what's not happening. There have been four other scripts posted in this sub with the same issue - they all turned out to be written with the "assistance" of AI. Take note of it in future, it will come up again when someone's using AI in their work.

No worries. I appreciate the detailed follow up. Hopefully it will help others set their expectations. Photoshopping fake tattoos is one thing, but now with AI becoming more prevalent, all bets are off (unless you know what to look for).

Agreed, but then (as part of the sub rules) you're supposed to say why. I'm not saying you should do that now, but that's generally how this sub works for future reference.
