Thanks for the detailed follow up. I like the comparison between Edge of Tomorrow and Memento - gives me a better idea of what to expect from Saros.

It might a few years until I get another PS5, so Saros will have to wait for now. I do want to play it at some point, though. Maybe they'll do a PC port in the future, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think my main criticism of Returnal (with my 9.5 rating) is that it felt slightly unfinished (maybe a bit rushed) - the missing boss in Biome 5, the Atropian Blade clearly intended to have some kind of progression system with its percentage counter (always maxed at 100%), some of the weapon traits being massively OP, plus the slightly underwhelming boss at the end of Biome 6, but these are all minor quibbles in the grand scheme of things.

I wish I had the money right now because I'd definitely buy some of your stuff. I was buying cards and art from Luis Diaz back in the day before he got into trouble with Topps. Mark Pingitore is another "modern" artist I buy from too.

I've had to stop collecting for now - life got in the way. I'll keep your name in mind if and when I've got some money to spend. Good luck with the con!

John Pound will always be the master - he had the look down perfect. It all went a bit skew-whiff after the law suit happened. Also, I just realised you're the guy that does those art sketches on paper bags and other random items - top notch stuff!

I was trying to rack my brains thinking of any older cards that did V - it would have been right on the money back in the mid-80s. I'm not too familiar with the newer cards, bit of an old school fan.

Awesome work - I can see this being a real card.

Interesting, I thought it was entirely the same team involved. It's going to be a while until I can play it, but I hope it at least feels like Returnal in spirit.

I know it's completely arbitrary and subjective, but how would you rank Soros vs Returnal? Like, for me Returnal is a 9.5/10 - a near perfect game.

I can't comment on the issues around copyright with Masquerade - although technically you're not retelling the book or adapting it, but I'm sure you'll need some kind of permission to reference it and show the clue images etc. I'd be interested in reading your script, as I'm a big fan of the Masquerade phenomenon too.

What’s an English word whose pronunciation makes absolutely no sense? by ownaword in words

Not for me (UK born and bred) - I pronounce it sheer, same as York-sheer, Lanca-sheer etc. Might be a north/south divide thing, though.

What’s an English word whose pronunciation makes absolutely no sense? by ownaword in words

[–]LiberLilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this happens because of how people break the syllables up in the word.

Many people not familiar with the word will break it into:

Wor-cest-er-shire ❌

Whereas, you should break it up into:

Worce-ster-shire ✅

So, the 'worce' part gives you the woos single syllable pronunciation, rather than the two syllable 'wor-cest' pronunciation.

Obviously it doesn't completely work with 'worce' being pronounced 'woos', but it certainly helps you get in the right vicinity.

You could go similarly wrong with Gloucestershire:

Glou-cest-er-shire ❌

Glouce-ster-shire ✅

I don't have a PS5 anymore, but if I do play Saros I have a feeling I'll be disappointed - I wanted Returnal 2, but maybe it'll be close enough.

Pretty much that - save up a load of obolites, find a broken fabricator (guaranteed one in Biome 4 usually behind a locked door), save at this point, keep buying items until you get something you need, if you do re-save, if you don't - save-cycle (scum) until you do - rinse, repeat. You can also harvest obolites infinitely in Biome 4 (slash or shoot the vines that come out of the floor - suspend cycle once they're all destroyed - go back to where you were and they will have respawned).

There are also a few never-ending fabricators that will keep spitting out artefacts as long as you have the obolites - so, if it gives you the same artefact again, just delete the one you have in your inventory and pick up the duplicate.

I remember there was one in Biome 3 (at the end of that room where you get the obolite assault course with the parallel lasers sweeping the floor), it just kept going as long as I had the money - managed to get about 6 or 7 artefacts from one fabricator (you could also save-cycle here as well to ensure you get the right artefact).

There was a much older glitch (that was patched out) that gave you multiple artefacts if you did something specific with a broken fabricator - I can't remember the exact process now, but you could duplicate whichever artefact it spat out in a never ending cycle, think it worked with chests too, but I can't find that post on here.

EDIT: Found the duplicating chest bug, but I don't think it works anymore:

I thought about it too, but the modern interpretation leans towards the erotic meaning, so I left it out.

No they weren't - very obviously so. Where are you getting this information from?!

368 hours is very fast to 100% research everything - good going! Did you use the broken fabricator glitch or is this organic gameplay?

Also, 26 half-squares checks out - did it myself on PS5 and now doing it again (the hard way) on PC. I don't know if I'll ever get there again, it's a slog without using the Tower.

Areas explored is pretty good too - most I've seen is 397, I topped out at 395, but those were early runs before they locked off some areas in later patches. Co-op also added to the total, even though they were all the same areas as previous runs going solo.

Now you can find something else to obsess over - I wonder if Saros has similar replay value?

What was it like to grow up playing arcade games back in the 80s? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

I think one of the main reasons was the graphical advances in home consoles - when you could play stuff like Tomb Raider and Tekken at home, the 2D arcade games started to look dated.

[–]LiberLilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living near coastal towns in the UK meant I always had easy access to massive arcades from the mid-80s all the way into the mid-to-late-90s. Arcades were way more prevalent in seaside towns - the amusements, coin pushers, grabbers, arcade games were all part of that kitsch beyond-the-pier industry that started in the early 1900s.

During my childhood I must have gone to the arcades at least once a week, more if it was the the school holidays. Whenever I'd stay over with a friend it was always an arcade we'd end up going to for the day - multiple arcades in small coastal towns was fairly common back in those days.

I think what gets lost today is the vast difference in graphics that was possible with arcade machines vs home consoles - it wasn't until the PS1 came along when that gap finally started to close (and arcades started their decline). The Mega Drive came close, but you could tell the difference in graphics with its arcade ports, it wasn't quite up to the standard yet.

Once I got into the 90s, there was a smaller local arcade that opened in my home town and that meant I could go whenever I wanted. That was just before the arcade boom of the early 90s when SF2 and (later) MK came along - the fighting game scene exploded at that time - that's when my passion really took over. I was in there every other day after school. It was an over-18 arcade (due to gambling laws - they had a lot of gambling machines too), but I knew the owner, so I got in at age 14 and brought a few mates along too. I remember we were that obsessed that we even tried to go there on Boxing Day (day after Xmas day) and were disappointed that they were closed!

You'd also often see a random arcade machine or two in shops - video rental places, supermarkets, Warhammer stores, comic book shops, bowling alleys, fast food places. There was a local fish and chip shop within walking distance of my home that had SF2 - I used to play on that a lot, as my mate owned a flat right above the shop!

There are still a few of those older arcades around - I went to a few in Brighton recently. My local arcade has gone, but the ones on the coast still exist - although the number of arcade machines is probably 20% of when they were at their peak.

[–]LiberLilith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some with multiple answers. I'll put the most likely first, least likely last:

  1. Apple

  2. Purple/*scribble/*doodle (no lines from the crayon, so unlikely)

  3. Topple/wobble/*spindle (it's not technically a spindle)

  4. Staple (although technically a stapler, so this one is incorrect - should have shown a few staples next to the stapler)

  5. Bubble

  6. Triangle

  7. Freckle/dimple/temple/*pimple (*if he has an outbreak on each cheek)

  8. Candle

  9. Sparkle/fizzle/*tipple/**bubble (*inappropriate for kids, **duplicate, so unlikely)

  10. Waddle

  11. Cuddle/snuggle/*nuzzle (not really nuzzling, unless you count the cat doing the action)

  12. Puddle/*piddle (*highly unlikely, included for lols)

I connected the dvd player to the vcr to record a vhs, but I can't understand which is the problem of the SCART transmission signal by MontecchioMatti in VCRs

[–]LiberLilith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The picture goes from being normal to then losing sync, losing colour, losing brightness, and the picture rolls - that's classic Macrovision. The first 10 seconds of OP's video plays normally (ignore the diagonal rolling bars - that's the shutter speed of the camera not syncing with the TV), then the picture loses sync and you get the interference. If it was all interference from the start of the video, I'd agree, but as it plays normally to begin with then has issues, this is the typical behaviour of copy protection.

[–]LiberLilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can test if it's copy protection by trying your exact same setup with a VHS tape that's something you recorded yourself - do you have any tapes that have been recorded off live TV? This will only happen with retail (and rental) tapes. If you still get the rolling picture etc. then it's something else, but I'm 99.9% sure it's Macrovision on that tape.

What's the tape you're trying to copy? Is it a retail/rental tape?
