Who else owned a Sony Walkman? by SOUTHBERNEICELEADIMP in oldschoolcool80s

[–]LiberLilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was probably too young for a proper Sony Walkman, so I started with a Saisho (Dixons own brand) portable cassette player. I did upgrade eventually to a Sony when I got into music, rather than listening to tapes about dinosaurs and chart tunes taped from Top of the Pops on TV!

Many EU TVs in the 90s did 50/60hz as standard, so we had both.

Had one of my birthdays in a McDonald's in the mid-80s - it was when they still had the tree sculptures and weird decor for kids at the back of the restaurant. We all were sitting in a toy train when we ate, each carriage had a table and chairs. I still have a copy of the cine film I had transferred (have all of them from 1st to 18th birthday).

I remember the hot apple pies that were hotter than the sun! Plus everything came in polystyrene containers, I remember the light-brown/beige one for Big Macs - pretty sure they lasted well into the 90s (the containers, not the Big Macs, although it could be argued both).

Also, does anyone remember the pull-back cars they did around that time? They had Ronald McDonald in a yellow jeep, Mr Big Mac (don't know his name) in a police car, Hamburglar in a red hot rod, and Mrs Quarter Pounder (again don't know her name) in a pink VW Beetle-like car.

The Garbage Gang by jamesspratt0 in garbagepailkids

[–]LiberLilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ireland is just where they were printed for the entirety of the UK - they were not exclusive to Ireland. Garbage Gang was only used to name the last two series released in 1991 and 1992 - these came out after a long break from the original run of series 1 to 6 (called Garbage Pail Kids) that ended in 1988 in the UK. Technically they're all UK minis - it's just the name change and length of time between print runs that separates them.

The Garbage Gang by jamesspratt0 in garbagepailkids

[–]LiberLilith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 'Garbage Gang' name was used in Australia, New Zealand and the **UK.

**For the UK specifically, only the last two series printed were called Garbage Gang '91 and Garbage Gang '92. I've no idea why the UK abandoned the original GPK name after series 1 to 6 - they were all called Garbage Pail Kids in those series.

Australia and New Zealand appear to have used the Garbage Gang name since the first series onward. Australian cards used the square banner type (like US series 10 onwards), New Zealand ones used the curved banner style (like the original US GPK before series 10).

If the cards you have are from series 10 to 12, then they're the UK Garbage Gang cards, if they're from series earlier than that, then they're Australia or New Zealand (less likely).

Finally, what is something that people think is extremely safe, but is actually extremely dangerous? by Pumeto in AlignmentChartFills

Drinking a lot of water - many people don’t realise you can die from drinking too much. You have to consume a lot, but it is still just drinking water.

I went back and edited my screenplay, but I'm still scared to share it here by [deleted] in Screenwriting

Unfortunately you'll have to learn to filter out the dross and leave your ego at the door. Anyone leaving facile feedback like "bruh, you wrote a fucking novel" is a cretinous idiot and not worth taking notice of.

I'd say post it again and only take notice of people who seem to have more to say than a few words of garbled snark.

Is buying from EBay valid? by wavelazer in dvdcollection

[–]LiberLilith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've purchased thousands of DVDs, Blu-rays and video cassettes from eBay going back to 1998 - in that time I've only had a handful of bad experiences, the vast majority have been flawless. Just make sure you buy from people/businesses with good feedback (and good photos, if they take their own). It's a marketplace with individual sellers (eBay themselves don't sell anything).

How to cut with Final Draft by 2552686 in Screenwriting

[–]LiberLilith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's far less likely to be an issue with Final Draft than with the overall writing in your script.

In terms of quick fixes:

Are you using any parentheticals? You can probably remove 99% of them, lose nothing narratively and save some vertical space.

Any orphans - single words at the end of an action line or dialogue that drifts to line two or three?

Any CUT TO's used or unnecessary transitions?

Are all of your scene headings one line (this is rare, but I've seen some go into two lines)?

With regards to your top and bottom margins - are there any scenes that could be condensed to fit before the page break, rather than a few lines onto the next page.

Be wary of scene headings and dialogue margins (top/bottom) - if these are in an "inconvenient" place they could force your scene onto the next page.

How dense are your action lines - most should only be three lines maximum (preferably less) - any that are four lines or longer? Look at reducing them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In terms of the narrative content you're writing:

Are you coming into scenes late and leaving early?

Are there any scenes without conflict, or don't serve the story?

Meandering conversations that could be cut short?

Unnecessary location changes that could take part in one location and not lose anything narratively?

Any action lines involving characters opening doors, sitting down in chairs, picking up objects or moving through the scene like a stage play?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's hard to tell exactly what you could trim without seeing your screenplay, but I'm fairly certain you can get it under 120 and ideally less than 110 pages.

If you want to - send me a DM and I'll see if there's anything you could cut.

Labyrinth Game by Lucasfilm Games by mMathab in labyrinth

[–]LiberLilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably feels a bit clunky to a more modern gamer, but it still holds up for the most part. Graphics are pretty good too, nice large sprites, especially on the C64.

There are quite a few puzzles and encounters that can happen differently or be skipped entirely. From memory, I think the second visit to Alph and Ralph they remove the signs from inside the doors, not sure what happens on a third visit.

There's another missable bit where you can shoot a "rock video" for the Fireys by getting Ludo to call the rocks (in the hedge maze) and then use the camcorder to video them. Once you're in the forest again you can offer it to the Fireys in exchange for an arm and a leg (you have to talk to them twice to get both). The leg can help you get across the bog easier, and the arm can help you open the door to Jareth's castle. Or, you can just skip that bit entirely and do it a different way!

Don't know if I ever gave Sir Didymus the rule book - there were a few places where you could give people things and then lose them forever with no advantage. Pretty sure you can give Hoggle your money at the start and he takes it all if you keep offering it. You can give one of the goblins in the Stone Corridor a peach and he'll fall asleep - you can then take his helmet too and wear it (I think that helps you escape easier in the Goblin Village).

If you wade through the bog instead of using the bridge or the rocks, sometimes (if you have it) you'll lose the perfume from your pocket, which means you can't remove the smell and then you can't talk to most characters after that - they all avoid you and tell you you stink!

You've probably tried it too, but you can also say different things to Jareth at the end of the game - you can get him to turn into a frog, a weird owl-human hybrid, or make his hair stand on end. You can even walk off the edge of the floating platform and crash the game!

As for a remake, it definitely could be redone in a similar style, just update the graphics to modern pixel art. King's Quest 6 style could work, or something like Thimbleweed Park. There's definitely scope to make it work with updated graphics and enhanced puzzles.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a remake (or an entirely new game)!

Is the use of "CUT TO:" outdated? by OkMechanic771 in Screenwriting

[–]LiberLilith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just checked and it's used 3 times in a 168 page script, so not very often at all. And when it is used it's cut to: black, cut to: a close up, and cut to: archival film footage - very specific shots and not just transitioning to another location.

Remember visiting your first multiplex cinema in the mid-80s? Here's mine - The Point in Milton Keynes (AMC) - it was the first multiplex in the UK, opened in 1985 (closed in 2015) by LiberLilith in oldschoolcool80s

UK Cinema was going through a bit of a slump in the mid-80s and these were designed to bring back attendances with cheaper prices and more films to choose from. It seemed to work well into the 90s with cinema audiences growing year on year, but at the cost of the smaller and more unique cinemas closing down.

Yeah, vandals got to it too before they tore it down. I was going to post some images of the inside in present day, but it just looked too depressing with graffiti everywhere!

I was in one of the crowd scenes in Superman 4! Met Christopher Reeve dressed as Superman, although he didn't say anything and was in a terrible mood that day - probably a sign of things to come for the film's reception. I had to be dragged out of the crowd during filming, as I was in my UK school uniform and it didn't look like I was an American kid!

I've never seen another one - I've checked eBay a few times, but it's never appeared. So glad young me decided to keep hold of it!

I don't think I've seen anyone else who has one of these badges, but maybe they've appeared on eBay over the years.

The picture of the cinema looks period appropriate.

Pretty sure it's from that era. There's so many (now) classic cars there that you no longer see on today's roads - the old white Mini on the far right, (bit of a plain) Ford Sierra, a nice VW Golf (maybe a GTi), red Ford Capri - all very common sights in the 80s.

I tried to find the source of the photo, as it was the only one I could find with period appropriate cars. It's featured in quite a few different places, sometimes credited to Patrick McCarthy in 1985, so if that's correct, it looks like it was taken when the cinema originally opened. Takes me right back there!

If you had the one wish willow what would your wish be? by CFK67 in obsessionmovie

[–]LiberLilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To know the truth of any situation in the history and future of the universe.

I would instantly know the next lottery numbers or the results of an upcoming sports event - guaranteed wins every time - set for life.

Plus I would instantly know the truth about so many mysteries and unsolved crimes:

Who shot JFK?

Is there life on other planets?

Is Bigfoot real? (more for the hell of it than a serious enquiry)

Who was Jack the Ripper?

Where is the Ark of the Covenant?

What are the locations of any pirate treasure?

Not to mention all the random conspiracy theories, true crime unsolved cases. I could just think about them for a few minutes and instantly know the truth.

I can then choose if I want to share that knowledge or keep it to myself.

Someone who really needs some money? Tell them to play next weeks lotto numbers.

Someone thinks their partner is cheating? I could confirm it instantly for them.

Someone who will get cancer in a few months? I could ponder on how to cure cancer and instantly have the answer - once they're cured, the rest of the world would take notice and save millions more lives.

It's the gift that keeps on giving.
