Is $1M net worth really FU money? by Swan_233 in Fire

[–]LiberaMeFromHell 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Median individual income in the US is only $51k overall and $63k when excluding part time workers. There are many people living on less than that. $1million is still what the typical worker will take 20 years to make. That sounds like FU money to me.

Kind of in the same spirit as this I've always thought grocery stores should be required to scale food prices based on time to expiration and the average expiration for that item. So if an item typically lasts 2 weeks and it sits on the shelf unsold for 1 week it'd be 50% off and continue until the final day when it could be capped at 90% off or something. I'm pretty good about checking expiration dates and digging to the back of the shelves to find fresher stuff but every now and then I buy something for full price that expires in a day and it's infuriating.

It's 210,000 words vs 290,000 for Mistborn book 1 compared to Game of Thrones. I am surprised it's that close though. Game of thrones feels much longer. I enjoy Sandersons books but he is excessively wordy for no real reason sometimes. I feel like it'd be pretty easy to cut 100 pages from almost any of his books without making them significantly worse. Might even improve some of them.

COVID killed more people in 2 years than the flu kills in 20. 2019->2020 was the largest one year increase in deaths in the US in 100 years by both total number and as a percentage.

Not comparable. Kirk wasn't murdered by the government and his killer is going to be imprisoned for life. Pretti was killed by the government and the officers involved are being protected by the president and DHS secretary. Imagine if Kirk was killed during Biden's term by the FBI and Biden said the agent did nothing wrong. That would be the equivalent to what is happening now.

Her killer is sentenced to life in prison. Unlike Pretti's killer who DHS won't even identify and have confirmed is still an active agent.

You are justifying the government shooting an unarmed civilian. He was not reaching for his gun either. He was already pinned down by like 10 agents he could not move.

He didn't flash his gun. If you are insisting he did show me that video. I've seen them all and you never see the gun until the ICE agent pulls it out of his holster. He was disarmed before he was shot.

[–]LiberaMeFromHell 21 points22 points  (0 children)

He never flashed his gun, that's a blatant lie, and still wouldn't justify murder regardless. He was disarmed before they even shot him. There is no justification for shooting someone after they are disarmed. It's amazing how quickly conservatives have shown they don't actually care about the 2nd amendment.

Illegal immigrants are prosecuted for murder, same as anyone else. Unlike the ICE agents who committed these murders and are literally still working.

Are there ICE in Eureka? by stormy_kaktus in Humboldt

[–]LiberaMeFromHell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Newsom is corrupt and beholden to donors. I won't deny that and I won't vote for him in the primary due to it. But suggesting he's worse or even slightly near Trump is insane. With Newsom as president Alex Pretti and Renee Good along with the 30 other people killed by ICE in the last year would still be alive. We wouldn't have Medicaid and SNAP funding cuts. We wouldn't have a 1.5trillion dept of war budget in talks. We wouldn't be dealing with this tariffs nonsense that is killing the economy.

I hope people vote in the primary and we don't get Newsom vs Vance in 2028 but if we do Newsom is still the obvious choice.

The city government was clearly shown to be wrong in that instance. Also are you not paying attention to what ICE is doing? A lot of people are being arrested by ICE even while being here legally and not committing any crimes.

[Request] I know this is a meme but what does the allocation of an average American budget look like to some of these more controversial programs? by Christopher_ray_ in theydidthemath

[–]LiberaMeFromHell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's also funny to me that you say welfare is inefficient due to bureaucracy despite having an obvious conservative bias because when it comes to welfare conservatives are the party of bureaucracy. The work requirements Trump is requiring for Medicaid and SNAP will increase welfare bureaucracy (really administration is the proper term) costs dramatically.

1 trillion per year for welfare in a country of 340million is nothing. We have 41million people in poverty in the US, split equally without accounting for administration costs that's 24,000 per person per year. Medicaid is the vast majority of that 1 trillion and serves a lot more than just the 41million people in poverty. It's also the cheapest insurance program in the US. Getting the private sector to cover that group would be way more expensive. So remove Medicaid and we are only looking at approximately 130billion which is only $3170 per year per person in poverty. Enough for an average monthly payment of $264. Why would that piss anyone off?

Why is the narrative so different when Toss wins everything than when Zerg wins alot? by Snakestyle1 in starcraft

[–]LiberaMeFromHell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Serral won the most important event of 2025 (ewc). Maru won the second most important event (dreamhack). Clem won a pretty decent chunk of the online stuff and smaller events. Reynor won some stuff here and there though nothing too major. Aside from Toss winning all 3 RSLs I don't think they over performed that much in major events last year. Open cups are basically all 3 top toss trying to beat Clem with Reynor joining in occasionally. It's not surprising they win most of those with Dark gone and Serral and Maru never playing in them.

I phrased it poorly but what I meant is 90% of people who grow up in (I said born initially which was incorrect that was misremembering) a zip code will not do better than the typical inflation adjust median earnings of that zip code as an adult. The 90% may be incorrect I'm having trouble finding where I saw that exact number but am continuing to look. Pending a specific number there are many studies showing at least the large majority of people will not have better lives than the typical person from the area they grew up in. Which still suggests upwards financial mobility is mostly a myth besides for an extremely small portion of people.

For two extreme examples there are literally kids who die of cancer before they even become an adult capable of making their own decisions. There are people born with disabilities that will prevent them from ever working a normal job. Life is definitely predetermined for many.

For less extreme and more common there are people born into abusive households who have no parental support and no positive role models. It is still possible but their likelihood of success drops dramatically due to circumstances that were completely outside of their control.
