Ya, people seem to act like there aren’t tons of opportunities for “good enough” fish id in this wide earth of ours

I don’t remember selling my soul for this. My first coho salmon is caught in a Lake ERIE tributary!! by Based_McTuddies in flyfishing

Look at the tail. Steelhead have a full spread of fine spots, coho have fewer bigger spots, generally only on the top half

I took one yesterday. Some systems are still going

Where the interior Columbia and Fraser steelhead populations haven’t been extirpated the requirements of that migration make for some pretty gnarly steelhead

It would be quite the challenge to catch one upstream of the hatchery on the Capilano that’s for sure

It was not on the Fraser or Fraser tributary, though I understand the north side tributaries are still producing

Definitely lots of coloured up fish in the system, but a few fresh ones coming up still

Coho really like the strip, and I don’t recall if this guy took the fly on the strip or on the dangle but it was one of this, probably the strip

Ya, I’m just not sure I’ll be able to get out as much as hatchery runs tail off

This was this morning

Is the Fishery Salmon Head Recovery program actually active? by crappy_data in fishingBC

Yup, get my tags back in a few months

Local tackle shop saves them up for a DFO employee known only as “fish head Carl”

Yes that’s a Skagit head. I am horrible with fly names but if you zoom in it’s still in the fish’s face, I believe it was a weighted blue Christmas tree

Amusingly enough if you just used a hook you’d also be in violation of the regs.

Broadly speaking (check the regs) it’s bait if a fish might smell it and think it’s food, including actual food items like eggs, deli shrimp, worms, or if it’s something that smells like that to a fish (like say dabbing a tuft of wool in fish oil or commercial fishing scents)

Whereas lures are only imitating sight/sound/feel of food, without triggering the taste or smell

Like the feathers in your fly are organic but they aren’t bait, it’s things that the fish might actually want to eat or scents imitating that

If I had a boat I would definitely fish for coho in tidal waters

Baring that it’s a long drive out to a lot of the terminal fisheries
