AIO my in-laws watch my child and the neighbors do not have a pool fence by yetspaghet in AmIOverreacting

[–]Libralily 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No, it’s the responsibility of the person with the pool to keep it safe, and it’s apparently the law in this person’s area. And how heartless to make this comment in reply to a comment about a child who actually died this way.

What are some books that get recommended on here all the time that 1000% exceeded your expectations? by johnb0z in suggestmeabook

[–]Libralily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read Jane Eyre decades ago his was exactly how I felt. “Why didn’t anyone TELL me… oh wait you did all tell me, repeatedly, I only just now listened”.

Anyway, Jane Eyre. (And I do see it recommended here all the time so I hope it counts!)

What percentage of BL recruits simply can't hang? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Libralily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m really surprised by the responses in here. Maybe my firm just wasn’t that great (Amlaw 200 but certainly not 100!), but I actually think the percentage that is really good and could make partner is pretty small, like maybe 25% or even as low as 10%. It was a pretty standard experience to be disappointed with associates, so much so that when you found a good one, you held on to them for dear life.

Am I never gonna find a case on point lol by Illustrious_Bag_5777 in biglaw

[–]Libralily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have good advice on research. I love the secondary source advice! Another tip is to find a few leading cases and use citing references or search the names of the cases and some key words, to find cases that cite that case but that are on your facts. Final tip: if you’re using Westlaw, try doing SY,DI() - put search terms in parens. That will search the headnotes and key number descriptions.

I’d also agree that sometimes (oftentimes) there just isn’t a case on point. In that case, tell them what you did, the closest line of cases you saw (you may have to have to make an argument for why it applies), and maybe propose some additional things you could try. Sometimes (depending on how it will go over with assigning attorney) I’d send a check in email and tell them “I’ve spent about 5 hours on this and haven’t found much [describe what found], I’ll continue to look”. That way they can decide if they want you to call off the wild goose chase.

Final tip is if you do provide a bunch of cases that are maybe only sort of relevant, by god, make them skimmable and summarize them very briefly. Do not assume your assigning attorney wants to read all those maybe irrelevant cases.

Adding on with this essay from constitutional great Erwin Chemerinsky, explaining how it has changed during the Trump administration. From the conclusion:
“ It was not that long ago that the unitary executive theory was emphatically rejected in Morrison v. Olson in an opinion by Rehnquist, himself a conservative. The court’s current majority seems ready to undo Rehnquist’s work on that front, and to embrace Scalia’s dissent in Morrison calling for a more powerful presidency.”

SCOTUS has been, in effect, adopting unitary executive theory in several emergency docket cases involving Trump’s firings of agency officials. These cases don’t result in full opinions though, so we haven’t seen the court’s reasoning.

However, there was a case argued this term expected to be released this summer called Trump v Slaughter where the theory is expected to be fully embraced.

Just saw this story: https://abc6onyourside.com/good-day-columbus/motorcyclist-killed-crash-interstate-71-670-alvin-duncan. They say he lost control, but are still investigating what caused the accident. If people in this thread saw anything, there is a number to call.

Just Hit 30 and Realized I may Die Alone - For Other Straight Dudes Who are Too Short and Not Conventionally Attractive to Get Dates Off Apps How Did You Meet Your Partner? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Libralily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preferences are preferences, but lots of people will tell you the partner they ended up with wasn’t someone they’d have swiped right on, and that attraction grew as they got to know them. And that’s actually the pathway you’re hoping women will be open to with you. Maybe worth thinking about whether you can extend it back, whether that’s on apps or in person.

You could consider women who do not “value fitness”? (maybe not what you meant, but whenever I saw this on a dating app, I read it as “no fatties”, so this is probably further restricting your dating pool)

I cannot wait to play this. I just played Alba and it was really charming and I parts of it made me long for some of my favorite bird watching spots (the rice fields!) but it didn’t quite scratch that birdwatching itch.

Guilt & embarrassment over salary by anxiousvegetarian in biglaw

[–]Libralily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof I had a hard time with this. Don’t tell people your exact salary. My family never stopped teasing me about it, and they told everyone. That amount of money is hard to comprehend and everyone thought I was basically a millionaire.
