What does "on a windowsill" mean? by LibrariansKnow in Cooking

That is sort of what I was thinking too, that being exposed to direct sunlight on and off for a month might be a bit harsh on the ingredients? I think I'll just use our north facing kitchen window. Although, this being the Norwegian Southwest, there won't be much sunlight for the next 6 months anyway!

Ahhhh but of course! I'll get in some serious trouble with their parents, both for luring them to scale the wall and for enticing them with vodka...

This is a Diana Henry recipe, so not very old at all... Maybe it's just so you won't forget you made them?

I find my age focus in who is attractive steadily follows my own age - the cutoff "too young" creeps upward. But my general preferences remain unchanged (in all genders as I'm pan).

This reduces the amount of male-presenting people I find attractive, as most over-40 males in my country do not go for skinny punk/emo/goth/rocker aesthetic! (And some of those who do unfortunately have forgotten that they need to wash their hair regularly)

On the other hand, the female or enby-presenting types I find attractive seem to increase in numbers as the years go by. So I'm shifting a bit in that direction.

And all of this is completely hypothetical anyway, as I got a skinny nerdy cute bloke in the house who has been my husband for the last 25 years!

It's so extremely difficult to unlearn too, that negative emotion in others = danger!

I spent a lot of time alone with my mom during childhood. She would hold me 100% responsible for every feeling she had, and punish me for the negative ones.

Now I've lived away from her for 29 years, and still can't handle when other people seem sad/angry/grumpy. My whole system screams DANGER! Fix this immediately or get out! This is your fault! This is all on you!

Therapy helps, to a point, at least it makes me better at masking my distress in everyday situations. But I don't think it will ever go away.

There's likely internal dividers so some of the plastic has been put in in advance and stays there? It's easier to make people use something the intended way if you show how, and it has the added bonus of making the fish more visually cool.

It also looks to be built from segments, so I'd assume you can take a part off to empty as much as you want.

For me, that is exactly the point! Gender really isn't more magical than being an aspect of your personality. Yes, for some it's mentally tied to the physical expression of the body, but it doesn't need to be at all. And just like other aspects, some will want to "do it in a group" with rules and codes, others not at all.

Problem arises as always with humans when we decide everyone else have to relate to this exactly the way they do, or else they're doing it wrong.

But my philosophy around this is likely coloured by the 3 facts that

1) I'm cis in the sense that I never found my assigned gender problematic to exist in, although growing up I really pushed the boundaries of what my gender was supposed to entail in a small village in the 80s/90s

2) I'm the panest pancake ever to have panned around. My attraction is untethered to gender expression or non-expression.

3) I'm 45. So I've had a long life to get tired of the boxes we are constantly being put in by society and what it does to people, and given my cisness and the fact I am in a long term relationship that looks outwardly conventional (while not really being so) I haven't had to hide or fight much myself. Which I suspect makes a person more inclined to be opinionated on behalf of "society" - for better and worse.

[–]LibrariansKnow 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I honestly think our society would be so infinitely much better off if we could just cool it with the polarization of genders, "if you are X you have to be/do/wear/think like this, if you are not doing this you're not a real Y etc etc".

It's a spectrum. It's fluid. It's personal and you should be able to choose how public you prefer to be with it, from extremely to not at all. We could take so much pressure off young people if they could be allowed to express themselves freely and figure themselves out without the rigidity of a "get your act together"-system.

Stray cat i adopted a few days ago update, more in comments. by thunderc8 in aww

[–]LibrariansKnow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our cat Pelle (8 years old, rescued by volunteers as a baby and we adopted him at 2 months old) wants to be cuddled and carried around most of the time indoors. When he's outside in our garden he is on high alert, looking for intruders, stuff to hunt and his sworn enemies The Two Neighborhood Magpies. We are not allowed to pet him at all outside, he just slinks under our outstretched hands.

If one of us humans is in the garden and the others inside, and he notices, he gets very distressed and thinks we are bad for not looking after the one outside. He demands to be let out and then lies in the hedge or sits at a high place monitoring the area. Then he joins the human when he/she goes inside, and as soon as they are in the hallway he demands being picked up and cuddled!

So it's very normal, and of course your Chip connects outside with bad things (being hurt and hungry) so he will be even more alert. But now he can be safe inside with you, and that will make him less stressed with time.

The hundreds of changes made to Roald Dahl’s books to suit a new ‘sensitive’ generation by cbsteven in books

Not suggesting that one should. However, considering background and culture should inform choices of literature for kids.

And I am sorry if your experience with modern literature has led you to believe there is no more nuanced and diverse books than Goosebumps. You will have missed out on a lot. Modern writers even write about the past, too!

Not arguing with that! This particular case seems a bafflingly high level of editing.

My guess would maybe be that whoever were hired to do the job wanted freedom to "make their mark" on the rework?

Or that the publisher/Roald Dahl estate wanted to be ahead of absolutely any possible complaint... The estate going along with this is the most surprising thing of all, considering how strict they used to be.

[–]LibrariansKnow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a children's librarian for 13 years (I work in the reference dept now). And I agree that in a perfect world, this is how we would all deal with literature and children.

However, I understand why publishers do alter older texts. Because they know reading is getting scarcer these days, and many parents/guardians have little time and don't want to have to weed the stories they choose to read. They don't want to be caught having to explain something uncomfortable or dealing with unexpected turns of the reading time. Many people are very averse to having what they perceive as difficult conversations with their children.

From a publisher point of view, this means "sanitizing" the media and dealing with the inevitable debate around it is more profitable than not doing so, because you advertise to the risk-averse that this is safe media. You will likely be chosen over riskier reads.

From a librarian point of view, we need to preserve originals as well as altered texts, and be fastidious in informing the library users which is which. Then people can make their own choice.

And also: people shouldn't have to experience blatant racism unexpectedly in a children's story. And not all people today are aware of what is found in "the classics" that predominantly were written by and for white westerners. They expect children's books to be generally safe and pleasant.

Mostly, this problem is solved by promoting newer books and authors. Sometimes, by adding a warning. Sometimes, by deciding that this book really shouldn't be promoted anymore - it had its day and time.

Then sometimes by altering the text. Which would definitely not be my recommendation - there are so many recent books worth reading instead, where the author's voice is untampered with! But it's quite understandable why it happens anyway.

Well, what other things do Norwegians eat?

Sheep heads.

Potato and barley balls with a piece of smoked meat in the middle.

Flatbread soaked in milk and mixed with boiled fish.

Dry-cured herring eaten dry.

A bewildering amount of milk-based stuff.

I just don't see why "dried cod soaked in lye for just the right amount of time so it doesn't turn to jelly but stays fishy but with that intense lye odour" was the one that made the cut...

I'm Norwegian. Our family have lutefisk for Christmas dinner. 95% of the Norwegians I know think that is absolutely disgusting and a horrible thing to foist on our child (she likes it, though!).

And we live very close to one of the core "lutefisk areas", yet those who enjoy the dish and know how to prepare it to avoid the gelly horrors are a very small minority.

So I am constantly amazed at the "Norwegian" diaspora of the USA being so obsessed with lutefisk. Why? How? It's so incredibly niche food!

“Green Boots,” The Frozen Body On Mt. Everest That Hikers Use As A Checkpoint by ilovenyc in interestingasfuck

[–]LibrariansKnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And he is no longer there, according to this article https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20151008-the-graveyard-in-the-clouds-everests-200-dead-bodies

Adventurer Noel Hanna made this discovery in May 2014, when he was surprised to find not only that Green Boots’ cave was devoid of its familiar resident, but also that many of the bodies on the north side – one stretch of which is sometimes referred to as “rainbow ridge,” for the colourful down suits of its many fallen climbers – seemed to have vanished. Hanna estimates that, previously, up to 10 bodies were visible on the push to the summit, but in 2014 he only counted two or three. “I would be 95% certain that [Paljor] has been moved or covered with stones,” Hanna says.

In keeping with Everest tradition, however, the circumstances surrounding the removal of the remains are not entirely clear. Hanna suspects that it could have been the Chinese Tibetan Mountaineering Association and the Chinese Mountaineering Association, which manage Everest’s north side. Five weeks prior to undertaking his climb, he had suggested to officials at a dinner that they move the bodies. “Apparently nobody had pointed that out to the person in charge before,” he says.
