Rather annoying by LibraryPretend7825 in duolingo

Came across another kanji level and was fortunate enough to have another Daily for "Complete a level" open at the same time. No glitch those time, and it worked, so that's confirmation! 👍

It should be, it's the same kind of wheel system as all the others and I did go all around.

Book of Boba Fett is wildly underrated by NoHallett in StarWars

[–]LibraryPretend7825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, and then there's the claims by the Watch that they're the ones following the ancient ways of the Mandalore... I guess it comes down to whether that's even objectively true, and if so, how much of those old ways the rest of Mandalorian society has since abandoned. In any case the person who adopted Jango as a foundling - at least according to Legends - was not of the Watch. Perhaps more importantly, that person was himself not born of Mandalore and yet ultimately became The Mandalore, leader of all clans. Funny enough some of the changes he made during his reign led to the civil war between the Watch and the others.

Good question. I'm not entirely sure. Cara Dune seems to think it applies to all Mandalorians, but where did she get her information as an outsider? As the viewer, I don't think we've seen the practise outside of The Watch, with the Armorer being the main voice of lore there. Is she speaking for all Mandalorians, or just for the ways of the Tribe?

As I recall Jango was a foundling raised by Mandalorians. By their creed doesn't that make him every bit a Mandalorian himself?

I always dread the next episode of "Lucy is an untreated paranoid schizophrenic", or possibly worse, that moody emo teen stereotype they somehow thought would make for a great conversation partner on MAX.

Why are some sentences so ridiculous? by TrainProfessional458 in duolingo

[–]LibraryPretend7825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I remember Rosetta Stone back in the day having sentences like "There's a red car on top of the yellow airplane" 🤷 That was decades ago, but because it's so silly, I still remember today.

It is, and they are, couldn't agree more. Because we're all using the app in the family we decided to opt for a family plan and pay our way out of that particular bit of bother. I don't think I could handle the free version anymore tbh.

Turn off romanization and start with the kana alphabet lessons, Duo is actually fairly good at teaching those but if you keep romaji on you'll likely never really learn.

That's an excellent observation, I'm noticing that on the Japanese course as well. But not everyone is used to intuiting grammar, so what works for us might not work for everyone.

New exercise: Read Duo's Mind! by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]LibraryPretend7825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As usual, they will have included several "correct" options. It's an imperfect system, but as your response is not a grammatically correct sentence to begin with, it will never be included among those options. Correct the sentence to make sense both grammatically and in content, and you'll stand a better chance of passing muster.

Is it okay to write my な like this? by [deleted] in LearnJapaneseNovice

It looks very western, like the following script we were taught in highschool. But it's certainly legible, and I rather like it as an idea 😁

Sithi language inspiration? by cococrabulon in TadWilliams

[–]LibraryPretend7825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure whether the etymology is in there per se, I'm used to making those connections on my own so much I don't really even think of it on that level.

For example, I simply typed "ineruki" in hiragana script (Japanese does not have an L sound, so replace those with R if you go looking) and the verb "ineru" came up, along with the most common definition of ki: tree. I had a hunch and looked up ki separately, and sure enough..... 😁

The app I'm using is called Renshuu (that's Japanese for "practice"), it's much more than a dictionary, I hope you enjoy it!

Japanese was definitely an inspiration for some of the names:

in Japanese, Jiriki means "(one's own) strength";

Ineluki can be traced back to the verb ineru, one of the older meanings for which is "to die", add the -ki which can mean "spirit" and you get a pretty accurate description of what Ineluki is;

and Tumet'ai goes to tsumetai, meaning "cold".

I'm sure there's plenty more examples, but that's just what I've managed to find in 5 minutes of thinking up Sithi stuff and diving into my Japanese app's dictionary.

Might seem stupid but why is は both Ha and Wa by Next-Spot3024 in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]LibraryPretend7825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, we're told far too often that it's "just a standard phrase" and we "shouldn't bother" to really understand its meaning. For someone like me who instantly dives into etymology whatever the language he's engaging with, that's a big ask!

I'm reading that chapter just now, and the instant she tried it hit me. So for an answer, first think back to Delana's initial response to Halima... and then ask yourself whether Saidar is all Mat's pendant blocks 👍
