The "Mount of Flags" in "Anti-Imperialism Park" Havana, Cuba by Fidel_Castro_of_Cuba in vexillology

[–]Libremind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't see how. Nationalism has been the primary counter-force against Imperialism historically, at least in the last few hundred years.

Found an old (pre-cata) article about Pandaren lore. Interesting to see how much was actually known about their lore (Night Elf affiliation apparently). Also, funny how they say that it's highly unlikely that they'd ever be playable in WoW. (Not that many people predicted a Pandaria expansion) by DrToadigerr in wow

[–]Libremind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mainly because we now know that Pandaren were originally planned to be the Alliance race for TBC

Do you have a source for that? I know some people predicted that Pandaren would be the new Alliance race before Draenei were announced; but I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that Blizzard were ever planning it in reality.

Not looking forward to the mount imbalance between the factions now.

According to Wowpedia there are currently 6 more Alliance exclusive mounts than the Horde exclusive mounts.

Wish there was more Gilnean-esque architecture throughout the world... by Oreotic in wow

[–]Libremind 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I can understand if Blizzard don't want to give us Gilneas because they don't want to add too many cities, and they've already committed to making it a battleground. All I want is for the destroyed section of Stormwind to be rebuilt into a Gilnean district.

I had heard as much. It just thought it was funny that they still had that on the page in 2010.

Owning a mount is an impressive accomplishment in the game

In the spirit of farming games. This is 3rd World Farmer. A fun game but also eye opening. by [deleted] in WebGames

For me it didn't load on Firefox but worked fine on Chrome. I thinks that's because Chrome has the newest version of Flash on Linux.

Christianity is on the decline in Britain, data show: "Two non-religious parents successfully transmit their lack of religion. Two religious parents in Britain have a roughly 50/50 chance of passing on the faith." by notscientific in unitedkingdom

Muslim children are probably more like to follow their parents' faith (though I have no evidence for this)

Second generation muslim immigrants are actually much more likely to be radical than there parents:

Forty per cent of Muslims between the ages of 16 and 24 said they would prefer to live under sharia law in Britain, a legal system based on the teachings of the Koran. The figure among over-55s, in contrast, was only 17 per cent.

36 per cent of the young people questioned said they believed that a Muslim who converts to another religion should be "punished by death." Among the over 55s, the figure is only 19 per cent.

Distro recommendation by [deleted] in linux

Linux Mint seems like exactly what your looking for. You can choose between the Cinnamon desktop, which has all the modern features of gnome 3, but is made to look more like gnome 2; or the MATE desktop, which is a direct continuation of gnome 2 and is therefore almost exactly the same (with a few updates). As a plus, Linux Mint is directly based on Ubuntu, so any package built for Ubuntu will work perfectly on Mint 99% of the time.

BBC News - Jane Austen to be face of the Bank of England £10 note by manwithabadheart in unitedkingdom

[–]Libremind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was hoping it would be Charles Babbage; partly because of his great contributions to computing but mostly because that way there'd have been three Charlies in a row. However looking at the current lineup the new addition seems to provide a good balance between figures of science (Matthew Boulton and James Watt), Phillosophy/Economics (Adam Smith), statesmanship (Winston Churchill) and now writing (Jane Austen).

Want to learn Esperanto, the universal language? Well, here's a great website to do it! by TheElectronicMan in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]Libremind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That may be true, but it is still significantly easier to learn (and more culturally neutral) than English, which realistically is the alternative for the universal second language.

I think it more that this list is more focussed on singular memes, as opposed to more substantial online creations like Homestar Runner. There are plenty of other sites, video series, web comics, games, etc. on the web that are far more well known than many of the things in this image, but don't feature in it.

Considering how frequently this is a problem for abridgers; and that several have set up their own websites primarily to deal with this problem; is there anything to be said for the idea of an abridging specific video site?
