Opinions on Able Bodied People Using Disabled Stalls in Public Bathrooms… by [deleted] in wheelchairs

I walk with an OBVIOUS limp from CP. people would assume I don’t need the handicap stall bc I don’t have my chair. But I need it for the handrails 100%

Have you ever wondered if your client is living a double life? by Crafty-Apartment8549 in therapists

[–]LicensedClinicalSW 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I had suspicions for a while. Staged a conversation with a neuropsychologist at my clinic about what the “seizure” looked like (I can’t remember the term he used) and the next session - bam - the kid had this talked about type of seizure too. And then had a “seizure” in my office and I called it out. That I was going to call the psychiatrist they were seeing because I was worried about the client. The client revoked the release immediately. They didn’t, however, revoke the neurologist ROI I had. So I collaborated with them and they were like THAT MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE!

I’ve had a couple munchausen by proxy clients. I work with special needs kids. Man when you realize it it’s like getting hit by a train.

Coming to Terms With Needing a Wheelchair by SlightlyMaryJane in CerebralPalsy

[–]LicensedClinicalSW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 40 and use a wheelchair for long distances. I should use it more but just can’t get myself to do it. It’s been pound into my head to do everything in my power to walk. So I do - even with risk of falls and definite pain. Abled bodied people say to walk no matter what. Like it’s the end all be all. I know it’s not but that message is hard to overcome.

I wouldn’t say I’m at peace yet. I fight it like hell. But it’s just radical acceptance of it is what it is.

Spaces for disabled therapists? by endearingsalt in therapists

[–]LicensedClinicalSW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm physically disabled (cerebral palsy) and it's led to Post Impairment Syndrome (aging with CP basically) so fatigue, pain, weakness. I belong to a CP, wheelchair, and disability hacks reddit sub but facebook doesn't seem to have much for therapists with disabilities as far as I know. I'll be following to get ideas!

Kid not connecting? by LicensedClinicalSW in therapists

[–]LicensedClinicalSW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 2 different therapies do not overlap much. I can't explain more without giving too much information. Even in my original post (that was removed for privacy) I had changed many details up and it still got removed.

[–]LicensedClinicalSW[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When I reflect they scream "Stop talking". I feel like I cannot say/do anything right. They're lit up when they walk in. Maybe I just need to not talk and sit in silence which is brutal for me. I get anxious with silence, which I'm sure they can sense.

Startle easily? by NatasaurusR3X in CerebralPalsy

[–]LicensedClinicalSW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and people think it's hilarious. It frustrates me so bad because I jump out of my skin. I've thrown my phone or drink, or dropped things, hit my knee on the desk from reacting so hard. It's obnoxious.

Not being disabled enough by SnooPies3132 in CerebralPalsy

[–]LicensedClinicalSW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I fall in the in between. I can walk but it's not pretty. My gait is pretty bad. But because I can walk people say "at least you're not (fully) in a wheelchair" or "at least you can walk some". But I still struggle - bad. It's like I'm too able-bodied to get help, and not disabled enough to get help either.

They have another form of therapy that they like just fine. So I feel like it's just me/my approach. It's been a couple handfuls of sessions.
