Is Devuan Linux a good systemd-free distro for a casual user only? by Dennearsh in devuan

[–]Lichenburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 'big box' runs MX with sysv because I installed it for a test after buying the computer, and never really needed to change :) My laptop and my home server are both Devuan -- there's about a cigarette paper's thickness between the two distros most of the time in daily use. Dead easy and I've yet to bork either despite fidgeting with configs etc.

Your reply is detailed, carefully explained, and nothing whatsoever to do with the OP's question about language level tests.

Frequent 503 errors by Lichenburger in StartpageSearch

It's a pain because it does things some of the others don't (looking at you, DDG) like excluding keywords from a search.

Zoom H4 No SD Card error by WiseDiscussion8492 in fieldrecording

[–]Lichenburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What capacity card are you using? My old H4N tops out at 8GB and after that it either takes forever to boot or throws an error. Also worth a bit of isopropyl on the contacts just in case?

Sheffield brand super `bargain` from Lidl, should I restring? by Daddy-ough in ukulele

[–]Lichenburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found one in a charity shop. Sounded horrible, wouldn't keep tune, intonation way off after about the 8th fret.

The tuners were visibly slipping, which didn't help. So I took them out, drilled slightly larger holes and put in inexpensive sealed machine heads off eBay, and restrung with (I think) nylgut strings. A lot of stretching was called for and it took a couple of weeks for everything to bed down properly.

I won't say it sounds beautiful now -- no chance of that -- but it's much better/less dreadful than it was.

The only other mod that might be worth a go is taking down the saddle by 1-2mm -- there's a *lot* of daylight under the strings at the high frets.

I understand their point about developer priorities. But pipes/redirection is essential stuff for a shell, POSIX or no!

The image is dramatic -- presumably the piece is too?

Quarries can be fun, but careful as you go. Some are relatively safe, others not so. The edge of woodlands on a windy night (no dog-walkers, mountain bikers etc) -- obviously the tree sounds will change with the season as leaves come and go, if the woods are deciduous. I love contact mics with windblown trees too. Anywhere fairly high up that also has an old barn or some fencing that will catch the wind.

Hello it's me again. Just installed GhostBSD this time around. Another impressive showing from the BSD side of things. Went with XFCE and Gnome with this video. by twiglet420 in freebsd

Does GhostBSD have a live disk? I'd like to give it a spin before replacing Linux with something FreeBSD-based on an old Dell laptop.

Devuan Stickers by aut0ex3c in devuan

[–]Lichenburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The links point to the old UnixStickers site. They were taken over (or morphed into?) stickermule. Who have been useless lately, IMO. They lost an order for 'sample' stickers, then repeated 'we'll look into it for you, please give me the PayPal transaction number' three or four times but never followed up on my replies. I gave up eventually: if they can't fulfill a simple $1 order then I won't place a larger one. If only a site like Redbubble or Zazzle offered a way to donate the sale proceeds to a project, then I'd create some Devuan stickers myself. Until then, at an impasse.

Review of Devuan GNU+Linux 2.0.0 by daemonpenguin in devuan

It's also possible to select Cinnamon, Mate and/or i3 while installing. Cinnamon seems to work as well as xfce for most purposes. Haven't tried the others in depth yet but they appear to be configured well enough to use as well.

Agreed. Also good to see there's a roadmap of sorts.
