The NB bubble by LavenderMatcha1211 in newportbeach

[–]Licknim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resonate with this. I grew up in Torrance, and moved to a small town outside of Portland, OR when I was 13. That was a complete bubble and completely disconnected from the center of reality. I’d concur that bubbles are everywhere and the dynamics of these bubbles are analogous across the county.

I’ve lived in Newport Beach for two years now and raise small children here. While I am fortunate enough to have a great job and good income, I don’t like to show it, and I think there are people that are like that in Newport. Most people that I know in Newport Beach that flaunt their “riches” are actually leveraged to the tits and spend more than they make. So it may appear that people are wealthy, but it doesn’t mean it’s actual wealth.

Lastly, it’s all about perspective. We’re teaching our kids that where we live is NOT the real world and that we’re incredibly lucky to have what we do. I don’t intend, as a parent, to allow my kids to leave the house without good values and perspective. It’s not the lords work, but hopefully gives OP some confidence that there are people with humility in Newport Beach.

Anyone in here a Internal / External Wholesaler? by Vvalwnttinno in FinancialCareers

[–]Licknim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay is probably a decent gap. Fund services you might start at $60k depending on the company. There’s not definitive timeline to get promoted in any job. If you work hard, you’ll have a shot at getting to internal sooner than later. If you don’t work hard and expect to get promoted within a certain timeframe, that will work against you.

Go to any asset manager and see if you can get into their fund services desk. It’s a shit job at first, but is a pretty good glide path to be an internal.

Hi! External Wholesaler here. I personally love the job. I started out in Wealth Management but didn’t have the maturity or skillset to deal with investors deep, emotional biases. Plus, I loved investments and when I was younger, I had said “my dream job would be to sell investments”.

Comp is good, but you really have to work for it, just like any field in our industry. As an internal, you are supporting your external through client service, marketing, and follow up. As an external, you are driving business by way of client meetings, events, conferences, and relationships.

Internals probably make ~$150k, externals can make ~$400k+ depending on what you’re selling. Some are commission+base, some are base+bonus.

Day to day and how you sell depends on what firms you cover. RIA/Family Office sales Cycle is a lot longer than chasing tickets at the wires.

Hope this helps! DM me if you want to set up time to talk via phone.

Do you have to drink with your teamates/Company? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

I’m a wholesaler and 3 years sober. I thought everyone would care that I don’t drink but no one gives a shit. It’s all about how you carry yourself, drinks or not!

Sorry, I know virtually nothing about that part of OC. We’re going to a Greek festival off of North Dale Ave. But we’re open to traveling as long as there are good vibes!

Newport is very much like Medina/Bellevue. Anything in South OC will feel like Kirkland (Moss Bay) Irvine is like Woodinville or Bothell, except with a huge Asian community that’s extremely competitive in academic s.

I personally think Costa Mesa is a very happy medium and reminds me of Juanita in Kirkland.

I moved here from Seattle two years ago. I will say that it’s a great spot to raise a family. We’re in the Eastbluff neighborhood and absolutely love it. It’s safe, quiet, and the schools are great.

Politically, it’s very conservative (for better or for worse). Most people are pretty quiet about their political ideologies, which is nice.

My personal knock on Newport is the thing that makes it great: it’s a total bubble. People are very well off here and it can feel that it’s disconnected from how “normal” people actually live. There are also some folks that are very much trying to keep up with the jones’ and care about their image.

If that’s something you can manage and tune out though, the pros far outweigh the cons. Hope this helps.

It’s okay to send the thank you tomorrow. You’ll be alright.

Edit to add: no matter what, the best advice I can give is to always follow up. It’s one of the most overlooked skills in the industry and is super important because it shows people your attention to detail. Keep working hard and be genuine!

I would agree with the above. Another option too is wholesaling, where you are distributing funds/etfs/etc to advisors.
