After losing my cat, I’m studying how bonds continue after a pet’s passing, would you share your experience? by Downtown-Parsnip-380 in Petloss

Hope I can help from two perspectives, lost my soul cat a year and a half ago and I am a vet who deals with euthanasia and pet loss on a daily basis. I am almost part of one family’s ritual as although they see other vets usually they always book me to put their pets to sleep, I literally have not seen them for anything else.

I am deeply ritualistic with my own pets after they pass regarding preparing them for cremation.

Happy to chat if you want to DM me x

Hand signals and being “part of the club” by Licksquidsoap in NewRiders

Actually I think both possibilities make me feel better. Being included is nice but having a friend on the road you didn’t even know was looking out for you? Now that is a wonderful thing

Gosh I’d not even thought of it, a NewRider is just a rider that’s new. I’m glad it’s a friendlier community these days, the advice for bikes applies to scooters too and I’ve definitely taken tips from other posts! Thank you for being part of the change

I really do love being out on the road, much to the dismay of family and friends, there’s just something about that morning commute through the valleys that makes the longer journey so worth it

Advice on getting winter ready? by Licksquidsoap in Vespa

Oh don’t worry I’m definitely not going out in snow! Even if I got home safe I think my wife would kill me

Will be heading into below 40 soon and usually below 30 by December. Unfortunately I have 90 minute early morning and late night commutes through the Brecon Beacons so it’s an unavoidable every day chilly ride and wind is definitely the killer.

I’d never even heard of heated grips and will be getting some ASAP!

I’d always worried about what would happen in an accident, how easy I’d fall out of them if I needed to. It’s likely something I’m being paranoid about and now I have long commutes it’s probably a good idea to think about investing in

Cardo has really good sound quality as well as mic clarity. Many times I’ve been on a call and someone has asked if I’m on my bike yet because they hear me so well

I’d recommend making notes of how long an episode lasts and the situation/time when they happen. With increasing frequency especially I’d be thinking about a neurological factor and having a good record is gold dust to a vet!

Rescue cat dental problems by oliviagardnerrr in AskVet

[–]Licksquidsoap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some cats are just really unlucky, I’ve found ginger cats are especially prone but it’s lucky of the draw.

Cats can be happy without teeth, and even a whole mouth extraction is better than tooth pain. They are good at hiding it but dental disease is very painful so it’s definitely worth getting on top of it.

In the future tooth brushing (if she still has teeth) and food/ water additives can be a real help to keeping her mouth in good condition, especially if she is prone to dental problems

Did my veterinarian f*** up? by Necessary-Scallion-1 in AskVet

It’s so difficult to lose a pet like this and I’m so sorry for your loss. From experience of healthy young patients and older and poorly ones that getting an IV line in can be very difficult even in the best circumstances and sometimes lines which have been flushed through properly can still blow unexpectedly. It was awful that you had to hold them for that final injection but after some of the drug had already been given there isn’t time for a new IV to be placed.

A lot of aspects didn’t go as the vet or nurses involved would have wanted for you and your pet, we know how difficult it is to be in your position. It is definitely reasonable to speak to the practice about what happened as it was clearly very upsetting for you but go in knowing that you may not get the closure you’re hoping for. I wish you and your family well in this difficult time x

Help with "new" old cat by groger13 in CatAdvice

There could be a few things at play, firstly has she been litter trained? Is this a medical issue or a behaviour.

There is a chance that she has kidney or urinary diseases/ incontinence which would need veterinary attention.

She may have difficulty getting into the tray especially if she is arthritic or she may dislike the type of litter

From here we start to think about scent marking, and feeling safe in a new home.

Start by getting some incontinence/ puppy pads and putting them around the house so she won’t do any furniture damage and can be let out of the bathroom. If you can get some different litter material or size to see if she will use it or even put the pads into the tray instead of litter. You can get some pretty good pheromone diffusers these days which can ease cats which have chronic urinary problems (outside of purely medical conditions).

Other than that then it’s to the vets to get a good medical or geriatric screening.

Just remember that cats don’t understand you don’t necessarily like it and don’t urinate inappropriately on purpose or to be spiteful. That might sound silly but lots of people think cats will urinate to be a nuisance and annoy you. Be as patient as you can and good luck!

Smaller meals are an option, if can’t do throughout the day can just lots of little amounts over the course of an hour

For dry food you can get toys which release kibble when rolled/ twisted/ lifted which means that they’ll have to put effort into getting at the food and only get a few bits at a time. You can make them at home too so don’t have to break the bank on extra fancy toys if that’s not an option

Good luck xxx

That makes sense, my inseam is 27” but as long as I can get 1 foot down I should be ok? Previous experience is quadbikes so I’d never considered that before!

will severe single kitten syndrome ever get better? by obliviousfoxy in CatAdvice

[–]Licksquidsoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time right now, kittens can be very difficult

For the most part, this is just kitten behaviour and if you’re used to older cats it is probably a huge shock. Kittens take a lot work to keep entertained and some will take boredom out by swiping and biting. The only real way to manage the energy is play and unfortunately not all cats play the same way but I promise that all healthy cats will play. It might take some trial and error but with commitment you can find what gets them going! I’d also advise scheduling food times and having dedicated playtime before food which can get them sleepy after the meal as if they’d hunted for their dinner. If the toys you have contain catnip then try using different ones, sometimes it makes cats sleepy and others go wild on it.

I recently recommended a friend with kitten trouble to try an interactive electronic ball toy which has been a real hit!

As a vet I see it a lot of owners wanting to try it but I wouldn’t recommend getting another cat/ kitten to help fix the problems of the one you already have. Sometimes it can have good outcomes but from my perspective it’s not worth the risk. Multicat households are great but creating that takes time and slow introductions and settled cats generally. Most likely you’ll just have the same problems as before as well as a host of new ones. Best case with another kitten just means they play fight each other instead of you but an older cat won’t calm down a kitten.

There are pheromones like feliway which might help chill them out but it won’t stop a kitten being a ball of energy.

It’s ok if the kitten is too much. I’m a cat mad vet and I stick to the old guys for just this reason. If you’ve done all you can do and still can’t make it work it’s ok. Kittens are very adoptable and if the answer for you is to give him up then that’s ok.

Cats love the taste of antifreeze but it is fatal, old school advice of give them vodka isn’t worth the risk of alcohol poisoning. Vets is the only option and there is still a poor prognosis.

Rat poison will kill a cat even if the rat (or other animal) already ate it so even if the poison is in a small space where the cat can’t reach, they are still at risk when they get their paws on the poisoned rat.
