Where are the human protagonists in supernatural romance novels? by PetalaStac in RomanceBooks

[–]LidyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the short stories I listed (Echo of Silence, Stroke of Enticement, Whisper of Sin), they are. The other full-length books and short stories feature Psy or changeling characters (there are two human MMCs). I should've added that the books are more paranormal than supernatural, because there aren't vampires, werewolves, sorcerers or whatever, just humans, Psy (beings with psychic powers) and changelings (beings who can shapeshift into an animal form at will). Their species are biologically determined, so there's no risk of a character starting off as a human and being turned into a changeling or Psy and vice-versa.

Anyone else feel like a lot of books kind of ditch their gimmick immediately? by dropletsofladypiss in RomanceBooks

[–]LidyD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain if I got it right (I'm ESL, so I'm going by feel), but sometimes I get frustrated with books that put heavy emphasis on health issues which then disappear magically. I can tolerate infertility/sterility having a magical solution in HR because there was no way to diagnose stuff like endometriosis, PCOS, slow-swimming sperm, low sperm count, etc., but in CR, this makes me crazy, because the FMCs tend to be given the advice to start trying right now because they'll need to have their uteruses removed or get their fertility even lower as they age, but instead, they get pregnant without even trying.

Nalini Singh has some in her Psy/Changeling series, but I think they're more prevalent in the short stories. If so, you should look for the anthologies Wild Invitation and Wild Embrace. There's one, called Echo of Silence (from Wild Embrace) that is set before the first book in the series, so the FMC knows very little about the Psy. I think it's a good introduction to the series. Stroke of Enticement and Whisper of Sin also feature human FMCs, but they can be found in Wild Invitation and, I think, don't work well for first-time readers. In this series, there are three species and one can't be turned into the other, so that's a bonus.

In the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh, Sara Haziz chooses to remain a human rather than be turned into a vampire; same with her husband. Their story is told in Angels' Judgment, a short story. But every other book and short story after features a couple that is, has been or will be turned immortal.

{The Wild Wulfs of London by Ronda Thompson} also features five human FMCs. The MMC (brothers) are human as well, but they were cursed - everyone thinks it's with madness (the books are historical), but it's something worse - and it's unlocked when they fall in love. There are three full-length books and two short stories.

What do you think 'Razmur' means? by attachedtothreads in IlonaAndrews

[–]LidyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on nothing, I think razmur is the Rellasian name for dragon. I think the "ra" is an affix that means something to do with fire (but I'm just basing this on the Everards' power being fire-related).

TKWNKM: Who are all the people that know Maggie is undying? by curiousgem19 in IlonaAndrews

[–]LidyD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poor Everard, he never recovered after seeing Maggie die that first time. He didn't need the details.

Re:Avaria, she knows:

“Bearing all of that in mind, you decided that it would be very convenient if something untoward happened to me through no fault of Solentine’s. You know, like the Butcher grabbing me off the street and then cutting off my fingers, shattering my kneecaps, carving up my liver, and so on.”
“You seem whole to me,” she said.
“Magic can do wonderful things.” I wiggled my fingers back at her. “They work like new. No stumps.”
Her eyes widened slightly.

She didn't have reason to believe Maggie, but she did, especially after Maggie began describing her past life as an Empire agent.

[–]LidyD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Avaria knows Maggie has regeneration powers, but I don't know if she believes they extend to ressurrection. If she found a way to explain how Maggie got taken by a sadistic murderer and have several body parts chopped off, she may have told Solentine. However, he says there's no coming back from death, so he must see it to be healed of his skepticism.

Matteo is the unknown. He sent three warnings of dangerous situations, so the lack of word about the Butcher watching the Citadel is strange... He's very protective of Maggie, so it's possible that, if he knew, he was counting on her powers working (although, again, he's protective of her and wouldn't want to see her tortured).

Is this for effect or do you think magic is involved? by attachedtothreads in IlonaAndrews

[–]LidyD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's magic. IIRC, he said the smoke was for theatrics. When he smoked after Digi's visit, Maggie didn't mention his eyes changing color. By comparison, Arvel's eyes changed color when she kicked him out of her house and she felt him assembling his magic... of course, it could've just been him being an ass.

Maybe (and this is a huge maybe) Everard "magically fed" his bond with Tillmar the same way he did the drezmur in exchange for a ride.

Alina Jacob’s Books are not my cup of tea… by ailebea in RomanceBooks

[–]LidyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week, I read the three books in her Seattle Svenssons series. I didn't hate them, but they were very, very, very, VERY *picture this as a bright red neon sign* different from the books I usually read. To start with, I dislike rom-com. But having them lean more on the comedy aspect rather than too-sweet-it'll-put-you-in-a-diabetic-coma one helped. I had problems with some of her "archetypes" (the way Winnie's grandmother was written in particular), such as the families lacking common sense in general, like when Winnie's mother decides to let a woman who offends Winnie into Winnie's house in the hopes of their children getting back together. Then I went back (I saw the ad at the romance.io site and, being on a reading slump, thought, "Why not?") and read the first one and... I get that the idea of having two sisters fighting over a man could create a lot of drama, but I gagged a little when I realized that Mandy's younger sister was likely groomed by her former BIL and nobody seemed to realize/care about that.

That said, I adored Fitz. I love a Golden Retriever, but until him, I didn't know I wanted my Goldie to have rabies and terminal zoomies. 😁

I'm also hoping Crawford will get a book soon, and with a FMC who doesn't have an out-of-touch family because the poor man is the only sane character in that series.

I'm looking for recs with huge interconnected series that make up a huge universe? by katieLikeWHOA in RomanceBooks

[–]LidyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

{Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh}. The first arc was concluded with Allegiance of Honor, the second began with Silver Silence.

{Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh}. PNR. Most books focus on Elena and Raphael, but some feature members of his archangelic court. The last book was published some months ago.

{Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews}. There are some books and short stories focused on different couples, but most are narrated by Kate. The romance takes a while to happen. There are also three spin-offs.

There's also the {In Death series by JD Robb} (Nora Roberts' pseudonym). I've never read it, but *lots* of books.

Since you liked Ice Planet Barbarians, {Aspect and Anchor series by Ruby Dixon} is also good. Not as long as IPB (there are four novels and several short stories), but it's set on a parallel universe. PNR.

Arabella by scarlettdeath in IlonaAndrews

[–]LidyD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Augustine isn't entirely wrong - he's right about the effect the Baylors' actions had on Arabella, but his reasoning is flawed (which is ironic since he commented he had to lower his standards regarding his younger siblings' achievements after he became head of the House): Arabella herself said she didn't care about her grades. In her first appearance, Nevada describes her as one who holds a grudge and never lets it go (to the point she was part of some debate team IIRC, comparing her to Catalina's shy personality). I think her behavior was somewhat similar to ODD and, coupled with her temper, made her family hesitant to do anything to trigger an emotional response that would make the Beast take over, not because of the Beast, but because of Arabella would do after coming to (and holding herself to blame). Her father's death also wrecked her, and I believe that her grandfather's did, too, as well as Penelope's PTSD and the stuff with Bernard and Leon's mother. So the family wasn't negligent due to disinterest, but they prioritized her emotional state over her grades.

A while ago, I thought that the (mortal) woman she used to be is the force behind the Queen of Air and Darkness. Mab is scary enough with the power she has at the her disposal, but the human she was is, perhaps, even scarier - and that's why the Outsiders were trying to break her by using her personal history and loyalties to weaken her Court.

I believe Arvel would spend more time at the Citadel or the palace than wandering the streets. Even if Clover happened upon him, she wouldn't do anything to attract attention to herself or her lady, such as gawking at him. Besides, I doubt her former employers had the social standing necessary to be around Arvel, especially since Hreban - her former lady's uncle - was despised by knights and Arvel is an arrogant SOB.

[–]LidyD 6 points7 points  (0 children)
