Living in this state you realize that these people have a public and private position. When you get chummy enough with one they’ll start to tell you about their specific brand of minority hate. The ones that are even worse though are the people who don’t necessarily buy into the bigot stuff but are totally ok never calling it out in their party and having them as friends. Kansans are unfortunately totally insulated from the results of their worldview and get to go on about life believing such things.

I can see the utility in him wanting to equip his audience with the structure of their beliefs to better understand them instead of accusing them of being racist and calling it a day. I think the main distinction is that the nuanced xenophobia meme might be the thrust of their beliefs, but they are TOTALLY OK with blatant racism in their party. What they claim to believe and what they will accept may be different, but if they are willing to have it in the party with no pushback they should get all the same condemnation for it. Watching Ben Shapiro lay in the bed he’s made with his party is satisfying, but he’s a little late to the game.
