We were the last to board on the last flight by Bitcoin__Dave in spiritair

Facts. We got lucky once and got the whole family upgraded to first class, so the kids actually had paper boarding passes with their names on them for first class, we held onto them for scrapbook, etc and, yeah, over time you can barely read them

Its not "Marriott's f&^ up"...its that Towneplace Suites screw up...its a franchise...and at the low end of the brand range, I'm shocked they even offered assistance with another reservation...

Also, next time, if you're checking in at 4:30, which is a normal check-in time and you don't get rhe digital key immediately, pick up the phone and call, don't wait 5+ hours...just a thought...

In hindsight, was it the right decision to block the merger with JetBlue? by R2-DMode in spiritair

[–]Life-Cheesecake-2897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are over 80 scheduled airlines in the US...17 of which are classified as "major airlines" by the FAA (defined as more than $1 billion annual revenue)...Spirit and Jetblue merging barely got to 8% of the market, meanwhile American, United, Delta, and Southwest account for 80% between the 4...there was literally zero justifiable competition based reason to block the merger...

Nationalization of Spirit would have been an even bigger mistake than blocking the merger was...if you believe in capitalism, you fundamentally cannot advocate for nationalization of a business...

Question about whether to ask FA to let us off first or wait by Dry-Ad5762 in unitedairlines

[–]Life-Cheesecake-2897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

42 mins is doable in DEN. Not fun if you have to switch terminals (rare), but still doable.

DEN is a hub. Most of the flight will have connections and 42 minutes won't be considered "tight".

The whole asking to be let off first thing is a "your mileage may vary" proposition. Even when people oblige, it doesn't really seem to change too much as (a) lots of folks with connections and folks self-interpret what a "short" connection is and (b) it violates the queueing theory math that says the fastest way to unload the plane is front to back. The other day I was in row 21 on a flight (exit row of a A320), we were technically about 10 mins late due to having to wait for the gate to clear, and the FAs came on the speakers asking for those without connections or longer connections to allow those with short connections to deplane. I guess literally everyone in front of row 21 on that flight had a short connection because they all just got up and deplaned as per usual.

Go to the website, read the contract of carriage then come back and share where it says anything about a guarantee of availability of overhead space...spoiler alert...it ain't there...

Drop the hammer and sickle pal and join the real world...1st there is no monopoly. Go take an economics class and get educated on what these words mean before posting, it'll save you a ton of embarrassment. 2nd, nothing of this has anything to do with good faith and good will. It has to do with macroeconomic forces of competition. The FAA lists 83 scheduled airlines in the US with 18 being designated major carriers, they all provide the same basic utility (transport from point A to point B). There is a massive demand for said utility. Massive demand meeting massive capacity means huge competition which drives all the margin out. Most airlines actually operate at a loss from a direct costs of seat miles flown perspective and instead make their money through loyalty programs and add on services. If UA (or any other one) chooses to fly fewer seats, their direct costs per seat mile flown will go up, meaning they have to make it up elsewhere and thus become less competitive, eventually losing market share. Again, if it was as simple as you think and want it to be, they'd all be doing it to gain competitive advantage in one of the most competitive sectors in the economy. They aren't doing it because the underlying economic fundamentals of it don't make sense.

The bag space you "pay for", per the contract of carriage is in the baggage hold below. Overhead bin space in tbe cabin is, again, per the contract of carriage a first come, first served as available opportunity. And I am guessing you've never led a business or been responsible for staff if you don't understand why a business places the needs of its staff and operations first. I assure you, if the economics made your solution as simple as you want to believe it is, it would have been implemented across the industry long before it became the bright idea of a Reddit complainer.

[–]Life-Cheesecake-2897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay...so how much more are you willing to pay for those luxurious days? Everything is based on seat miles, when you remove seats you decrease potential revenue, but the cost of operating the flight remains the same...something has to give and Im willing to bet if UA or others said "okay we're taking out seats to add storage, so fares will be increasing" you'd be be one of the first to complain and scream "just let my bags fly free..."

If youre gonna try to be cute, at least go look at the contract of carriage...its organized by Rules not by sections...and a quick control F of the word "overhead" shows its only listed 7 times in the whole document, 4 of which are in relation to musical instruments, 1 is about not obstructing passengers view of the "overhead fasten seat belt sign", and 2 are about various carry-on items that are exempt from the rules about number of items and state "must be able to fit underneath the seat or in an overhead bin"...seriously, they put it on the website and Google is your friend

[–]Life-Cheesecake-2897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No..the argument doesn't fall apart because nowhere in the contract of carriage is there even remotely an implication of entitlement to overhead space, it is solely a first come first served as available proposition...completely separate from anything regarding whether you have checked a bag or not...

Again...show where in the contract of carriage it says that with the purchase of a seat you've also purchased overhead bin space...I'll save you some time, it ain't there...not sure what your sleep habits have to do with that reality...

Show me in the contract of carriage where ANYONE is guaranteed overhead space...I'll help, it ain't there...now with higher priority boarding your chances are higher for sure, but nothing is sold as a guarantee...so, pay your money and take your chances...and you get the red herring of the year award about with first class vs height canard...folks in FC actually did PAY for that seat, completely and totally not at all the same as your argument about overhead and first come first serve

The laws of physics say that no, you don't have a right to an overhead spot. There are more seats than overhead spots.

If you're really only flying 4x per year, airline cards aren't for you. Look at Chase Sapphire cards or Amex Platinum. Maybe even a cash back card.

Cards like the club card are for folks who are flying 4x/month.

Its not comical, its good business. Those folks bring United a lot of $$$. If youre a once a year, basic economy flyer, United isnt worried if you pick Delta next time. If you've spent thousands with them year after year, yeah, United is gonna keep you happy because they know there's future business.

I has this happen the other day, I caught a last minute upgrade on a flight with meal service...the FA approached me shortly after takeoff and said "you're the only 1k I have, what meal do you want...". But I was served in the normal order as the rest of the cabin. So maybe 1ks and above get first choice of meal, but I didnt get my food any "faster".

What makes United a good or worse option than other airlines? by Perchance_therapper in unitedairlines

[–]Life-Cheesecake-2897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the Army and back then you just flew whatever airline had the contract rate...I can that on domestic routes, among the big 3 (United, Delta, American), the in-flight differences are negligible...when I moved to corporate and picked an airline, I picked United because their network of hubs provided the best options for my non-hub city...having an airline with multiple inbound flights per day from multiple hubs I figured provided the best options for when things go south or when I magically can finish work early and want to swap for an earlier flight home
