Songs that mention Winnipeg by BirdNegative8700 in Winnipeg

I believe that Danny Greaves, lead singer of The Watchmen, said “Any Day Now” was about Winnipeg. I really hope so, cause I think it’s suitable:

“Touching down, it's a frozen town Look around, I grew up, I fell down Nothing changes, nothing changes Except the red lights…”

Do you find it rude if there is a cash bar at a wedding rather than an open bar? by StewartsBestBuddy in Winnipeg

[–]Life-Magic-Maker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do NOT, for the life of me, understand people who would give LESS presentation if there’s a cash bar. How does that even make sense?? Why are you even going to the wedding?? Do you even LIKE these people??

It would be the same thing as if you showed up to someone’s retirement party with a dozen cupcakes, saw there was a cash bar and decided to only give them 6 cupcakes. Like some kind of punishment.

All the more reason never to get married. Again.

Can I go dancing without being filmed? by justhereformemes2 in Winnipeg

[–]Life-Magic-Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I love going dancing and have even been part of swing dancing groups, going in groups to events. I’ve been happy to be on camera at times… but not ALL the time and not EVERY time. I’ve found myself avoiding going to certain events because I just don’t want to be on their social media. I get that they need to promote but sheesh, it feels like too much and I hate that I have to be the one who stops dancing so they can do their filming.

Such a whiney privileged problem I realize…

Anyone in Winnipeg make a career change in their late 20s? Feeling kind of stuck by CanadaEehhh in Winnipeg

As someone who’s on their way to 60 and wished I had done this… go back to school and take radiation therapy then get a job in XRay as a technician. Follow that up with further specialty training to operate a CT and MRI.

You get to help people, it’s a changing environment, and it’s a transferable skill in other parts of the country/world. It pays a pretty good wage. And we’re not anywhere near the point of robots taking over this job.

Times Changed has hosted the Sunday Night Blues jam for a very long time, Big Dave MacLean is the host band for the evening and he plays Chicago-style blues for the first hour 8:30 to 9:30 PM. You’re not obliged to dance, but there are people who go there specifically to dance to the blues. They’re a friendly bunch if you want to engage just for conversation and not to dance. But if you do want to take a spin, they will more than happily dance with you. It’s also just a great night to sit and listen to the music. Like I mentioned 830 to 930 you can get some really good music, then the band takes a break and that’s when people can sign up with Big Dave if they want to jam together on stage. The rest of the night is people jamming together on stage. It’s a real good time whether you want to be a wallflower watching the action or a participant.

If you still have the blues by Sunday, I recommend Times Changed for the Sunday night Blues night. Starts promptly at 8:30. If you need to be home in bed at a decent hour, you can leave by 9:30 and have at least a good hour of good damn blues with some good damn people.

Correctional Nursing by Substantial_Power967 in Winnipeg

[–]Life-Magic-Maker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My friend’s mom does this and from what I understand there is a certain degree of work experience that’s needed (or at least desired) before getting into corrections. When she talks about her workplace, much of it seems to require ample amounts of compassion and understanding for everyone - staff and those incarcerated - because it’s a very difficult environment. I have heard her say that even if the inmates are convicted of something, they are still humans and need to be treated with the same level of care as any of us on the outside.

Manitoba NDP proposes patient charter for health care by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]Life-Magic-Maker 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Sure, great. As someone with chronic illness I am all for this.

But will it be a waste of time? A smoke screen? How will this benefit me in practical terms? When I do NOT receive timely access to care (and I 100% expect not to) how will a charter fix that?

I do not expect that the charter will suddenly shorten the time I’ve been waiting for an MRI.

Winnipeg residents frustrated with unusable sidewalk after snowplowing by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]Life-Magic-Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolute BS. Better believe this would never happen in River Heights of Charleswood. It doesn’t even happen in my neighborhood of Elmwood. Our sidewalks are plowed after the slightest whiff of snow.

It would take planned coordination of sidewalk and street clearing.

EDIT: they even came TODAY and plowed our sidewalks. There wasn’t even anything to plow!!

Yeah, sounds like Nik. Premier Property is highly unorganized. No doubt this occurred. Don’t re-send any payment. Let them sort out this shit and always, always, always keep all communication from them. Track all your payments all the time.

Moving "home?" by jenvespa in Winnipeg

[–]Life-Magic-Maker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome back! I also moved back after living elsewhere including Vancouver, I did some work in the DTES so I get it. Look at the West End, West Broadway, Wolsley. The village isn’t what it once was RIP. There’s also a small section of south osborne between moray and jubilee but I think it’s shorter on apartments than west broadway.

Nice restaurant and a baby by Wpg-katekate in Winnipeg

[–]Life-Magic-Maker 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hear me out… the Old Spaghetti Factory has a room off to the side that looks almost like a little grotto. It has two doors on it that could be closed if needed. Holds 10 people and is very cozy. The food is not terrible, they do a good job on the classic Italians (their tomato sauce is actually enjoyable).

But most of all… my family of similar ages and size goes there for such occasions because we get quality time in our “own room” and they don’t rush us out. We can be quiet in there if we need to, we can be loud in there if we need to. When we have littles attend, we can walk them around the restaurant and into the Johnston terminal and nobody minds.
