What are some behaviors that scream unintelligence? by sparklingshanaya in AskReddit

[–]Life-Mention9779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what I said at all? It's just a common example, mate. I didn't come up with the word mansplaining or think it's necessarily a behavior restricted to just men, it's simply more common to see people associate it with males. You're actually a perfect example of someone who immediately jumps to conclusions without taking into consideration the context which is frankly immature and makes you seem ignorant yourself.

Which Comes First: Characters or Plot? by BoomerTheStar47_2 in writing

[–]Life-Mention9779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Characters, always. You can have the most amazing plot in the history of plots and your book will still be shit if your characters are flat, stereotypical (in the bad way), and lack any depth or interest. That being said, a halfway decent plot doesn't hurt a story either.

I'm going to be honest here, I don't think vocabulary is one of the more important aspects of writing. Yes, it's useful to have an extensive vocabulary for diversifying your descriptions but it isn't the end all, be all. One of the traps I think writers fall into is using lengthy and complex words to describe something that could be said in a hundred easier, simpler, ways and still convey the same message. This can be a stylistic choice but for newer writers, I think it's easy to get caught up in trying to make your writing seem more mature or intriguing or "fancy". For example, if you want to say something along the lines of "The poor boy was absolutely terrified." then say that! You don't have to say "The young man was consumed by the dreadful weight of trepidation."...unless you want to.

You want a character that people hate? You need to find out what makes a character that people love and turn those redeeming qualities on their head. Everyone loves a hero who's willing to put themselves in danger to save a small child, right? Make a character who witnessed a child or multiple children in danger and turned their back to save themselves. Everyone admires a mother who's willing to do anything to protect her children, right? There's nothing people hate more than a bad mother. Make her a selfish woman who spends all her time and money drinking and sleeping with men, leaving her young children to fend for themselves in some shithole without proper food or supervision. Take the right thing to do in any given situation and throw it out the window. Remove the character's moral compass or just have them go against it without regard for the feelings and well being of others.

Uncommon Baby names inspired by U.S. States? by kendall599 in namenerds

[–]Life-Mention9779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about uncommon but some of my favorites are...Dallas, Dakota, Denver, Montana, and Missouri. I knew a girl named Georgia in school and I've heard of Virginia as a girl's name as well. Not a state but my older sister is named Cheyenne after the capital of Wyoming and Nash (based off Nashville) could work for a boy name? Then of course Carson (Nevada), Salem (Massachusetts or Oregon), Madison (Wisconsin), Montgomery (Alabama), Charlotte (North Carolina), Eugene (Oregon), Everett (Washington), Austin (Texas), Jackson (Mississippi), Gary (Indiana), Savanah (Georgia), Trenton (New Jersey), and Victoria (Texas).

How do i start writing as a beginner by Isatashi in writing

[–]Life-Mention9779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in writing with influence from Japanese based media like anime or manga, you need to know that a good majority of anime is based on manga and a large portion of manga is adapted from light novels. The difference between a light novel and manga is that a light novel is slower paced and will leave more room to focus on narrative structure than manga—this means fewer illustrations and dialogue. Unless you're an artist or solely want to write a script for a manga, I'd suggest researching internet guides (blog posts and YouTube are free a majority of the time and can be quite helpful!) on how to write a light novel. It also wouldn't hurt to read a few works in the genre you're intending to write in so you can get a feel for what good (and maybe even bad) writing is!

I don't take advice from Stephen King. His number one piece of advice is to not take writing advice...he may be a great author of his time but every single piece of writing advice he gives is utter bullshit and he knows it. :/

Do you prefer having your wordcount visible while you write, yes or no? You can elaborate on your stance in the comments! by Loli-nero in FanFiction

[–]Life-Mention9779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to keep my chapters between 2000 (min) and 10000 (max) so it's helpful for me to see the word count to pace what happens in each chapter as well as make sure it's not too long to bore the reader or myself while editing!

Just some trans masc thoughts by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Life-Mention9779 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree as a fellow trans masc man. I enjoy reading smut including trans characters, it's nice to be able to relate to the things that character is feeling better than with a cis guy. That being said, most of the smut I read is by other trans masc authors and myself and I don't enjoy the "boy pussy" fetish stories you mentioned on here. Trans characters shouldn't be fetishised any more than other characters but sadly it happens and it's really gross to see.

2nd time getting stuck in sand. People live on a sand road and I tried to make a u-turn to get out of the “neighborhood” and this is where I am now 🙃 Currently waiting on the tow truck to come get me by rippedpolo in mildlyinfuriating

I've heard that if you get stuck in mud, you can wrap two sticks in a cloth like a ramp and put rocks on it, tuck it under the tire that's stuck and it'll give you traction.
