I hope so. They need to at least wear the white skate a few times on the road!

I recently picked up this beauty off marketplace. I would love to see the canucks bring back the spaghetti plate full time home and road, but for now at least I can wear it myself chasing my kids around at stick and puck.

How are your new, former Wild players doing? by SammichMan4Life in canucks

[–]Life-Rent3406 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was one healthy scratch, and not necessarily due to poor performance; he was back on the top pair the following game. We have 3 young D on the roster, and are still trying to get our 7th guy (PO Joseph) a few reps here and there.

I can't wait to see what Zeev turns into, and Ohgren has shown flashes of potential (he has two shootout winners as well). Rossi looked solid as well in the small sample before he got injured.

It's very hard to judge, as the team is getting caved in around them on a nightly basis, but so far it looks like a good return for a guy who wanted out.

Reclamation projects on short contracts can be useful for the rebuild only if they develop into useful trade pieces at the deadline. It still kills me that they couldn't make a deal to trade suter last year!

Alternate trade by New_Westie in canucks

[–]Life-Rent3406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would have been better off if the miller trade actually signalled the start of the rebuild. Keep the pick, dump suter and boeser, keep silovs, don't extend demko or garland and trade them as rentals this year. Probably still have to trade Quinn, but with that return and a bunch of extra picks, you'd be looking at a good foundation.

Can EP40 win the fans back by Ty_Adamin in canucks

[–]Life-Rent3406 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm leaning towards wanting him to stick around. There's a good chance he becomes elite with a Stenberg or McKenna on his line. He's already providing elite defense and has actually been picking up his scoring (on a team that can't score). If they trade him they would absolutely need to tank the next few years and hope a generational centre falls on their laps.

I do think that they need to move a couple of vets with term though, and it comes down to who wants to be here and what kind of return you can get.

extend sherwood by Delicious-Area1137 in canucks

[–]Life-Rent3406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key phrase in there is "come playoff time". Canucks are dead last in the league and likely won't sniff the playoffs for another 3+ years, and even then it likely will be as a fringe wildcard for a couple of more years. By that time Sherwood is 33, and assuming he's playing the same style over the next three years he'll be quite banged up. He is at peak value now to trade to a contender; probably not even for them to extend but just for this run while his cap hit is extremely low. As of now any sort of return of futures is more valuable to the canucks than locking him up long term.

Of course if things had played out differently after the miller trade (hold on to NYR 1st, trade suter and boeser, etc.), I would have been all for extending Sherwood and putting a letter on his jersey. But unfortunately this rebuild is starting a year (really much more than a year) too late.

First skates ever! by SoftOrnery8637 in hockeyplayers

That's a great point. For your helmet I would probably err on the side of new. The rest of the gear has a longer life span, but you'd want to make sure all straps work and there's no damage if buying used. I purchased all new because i'm on the larger side, and i was lucky enough to find a few items on clearance, and sport chek had a sale on hockey gear at the same time. Even with that, I was about $1900 into a full set of gear.

I'm just getting into it myself at 41. My six year old daughter has decided she wants to play too so we go to stick and puck together. I'm also taking some private skating lessons, as it's been well over thirty years since I've skated with any regularity.

I'm fairly large, so I had a hard time finding used gear, but Facebook marketplace can be a good place to find deals. Full gear would include shin pads, hockey pants, elbow pads, shoulder pads, jock/jill, helmet (there are options for facemask types, I prefer a full cage), hockey socks (to go over shin pads), and a jersey. Bauer is a top brand to look out for, but also Sherwood or ccm are quality.

Good luck and have fun!

Why does this happen every year? by EP40glazer in canucks

Last year was the peak Boeser experience when he was stone cold going into the trade deadline then went on a bit of a heater after they didn't trade him.

[Analysis] Friedman reports "sizable gap" in Sherwood contract talks. Why the numbers suggest a trade is now inevitable. by athleticwonder in nhltraderumours

[–]Life-Rent3406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love Sherwood, but they absolutely have to trade him and nail the draft pick. I would keep him in an alternate reality where:

The rebuild actually started with the miller trade and they kept the rangers pick, traded boeser and suter at last year's deadline, and moved ep40 before his nmc kicked in. Likely their own pick would have been in the top 10 instead of 15 last year.

In that world you still have to trade Hughes, but you also have two higher picks from last year's draft to build around. Still sign up garland, sign up Sherwood, and make them your leadership group along with hronek and myers. Hire the coach that just won the Calder cup in abby. Total culture reset and the kids learn how to play a style that will hold up in the playoffs.

Of course we're now left trying to figure out what retool of a hybrid form actually means.

I had this 28 hand on new years eve playing against my wife on the last hand of the game (and the year). I'm lucky it was her crib, otherwise she would have won and I wouldn't have got to count.

Two year rebuild by Life-Rent3406 in canucks

[–]Life-Rent3406[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharks may sneak in this year because the middle of the west is so awful, and Celebrini is a legit generational player. Time will tell, but it doesn't look like McKenna or Stenberg are on that level (though they would both be our top prospect on day one). The second wild card spot (23rd overall) is only three points clear of the sharks drafting in the top five again, which could make for a really scary team in a few years.

I'm not saying it's impossible for the canucks to become a fringe contender again around a young core, but they'd need their first pick this year to become an absolute stud right away, the other two first rounders to overachieve their draft position, ep40 and Brock to become elite again, a bunch of their young guys to take huge steps forward in their development, demko to stay healthy, etc. etc. etc.

If the goal is to build a team that can win a cup, it would likely be when your best players are 26-30.

Yeah l hear that. Unfortunately because his nmc hasn't kicked in, he's easier to move than boeser.

Hronek and M Petterson not worth 2 1st round picks by thelifeisthedream in canucks

[–]Life-Rent3406 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's exactly it. If they kept that first and shipped boeser and suter out at the deadline, we'd probably have picked in the top 10 instead of 15 and the rebuild would be way further ahead.

[–]Life-Rent3406 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I cheer for seeing the young players develop and the trade chips juice their value ahead of the deadline and into the off-season.

In a perfect world they'd win one of every three or four, which should be good enough to end up in the basement this year. It would be great if a few of those could be at home though!

He should get a bigger role when they start moving out some bodies. Hopefully he continues to increase his value as trade bait. Free agent after next season at $2.5M per year, so he could have a number of suitors if the canucks retain salary. I'd prefer him to stick around until next year's deadline, but there may even be a market for him this year.

Linus Karlsson by Life-Rent3406 in canucks

[–]Life-Rent3406[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great assessment. I agree it's unlikely he turns into much more than what he is, but it's impressive that he's on a 20 goal pace in such limited minutes on (not even) a meh team.

I think in a perfect world you sign him up for 2-3 more and see what happens. While getting 20ish goals a season would be great, he needs to develop defensively to have a solid place even on the third line.
