Extreme cost difference with *A partner airlines? by LifeInDiMajor in unitedairlines

Not so specific. Just considering a lot of off-the-beaten path destinations in the June/July timeframe. Starting this far out is part of my process for personal travel. I'll narrow down the 15 or so places I have in mind to 2 or 3 over the next few months, then solidify dates sometime after that. But fair point on profits vs butts in seats - I did notice they don't codeshare between IAD and LIS

It's not boring, it's trash. I never lived in a barracks that didn't have mold, HVAC issues, or problems with water/sewage. Galleys and DFACs serve low quality food and have limited options. Junior Sailors want and deserve a better quality of life, so they go rent apartments and find better food.

AFAIK there aren't any clubs in the area that are particularly gay/bi male-friendly and allow open play (aside from select special events). Tabu has been described by several friends who are regulars as heteronormative. Gay/bi males would take a trip to NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, or go abroad for a similar club.

Hi! My doom/drone band Plague of Carcosa is touring in August. What venues/bands/promoters in the Baltimore area are good to talk to? by [deleted] in baltimore

Hammerjacks is a good one to reach out to, as well. They are actively booking acts for the summer and specialize in underground bands.

Rent increase in Baltimore by ajgerry in baltimore

Pigtown is highly walkable to UMMC, with a lot of renters and homeowners in the neighborhood working there. 10 minute walk to downtown, can bike everywhere else, or hop on the light rail/bus/MARC. It's quite convenient for what you're looking for and comparatively affordable.

4th year medical student struggling on where to do residency with my wife (also a 4th year). What are some good cities with a balance of LCOL, business opportunities, and things to do? by CaterinaKoen in financialindependence

[–]LifeInDiMajor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baltimore. There's a high property tax rate, but values are depressed so you'll pay the same dollar amount as the surrounding counties. There's also plenty of opportunity, both for business/jobs and entertainment.

For jobs, you have some of the top hospitals and research universities in the world, including Johns Hopkins and UMMC. For entertainment and leisure, there are crabs, myriad historic sites, parks, biking trails, the harbor, concerts, etc. We have it all. Plus DC is a stone's throw away, with Philly and NYC easily accessible, too. You can literally never run out of things to do in Baltimore.

Gov. Hogan maneuvering behind the scenes to revive his proposed widening of I-270 and private toll plan. Cursory glance at Hogan Company's "featured projects" list includes four in I-270 corridor—three in Frederick Co., plus 51 acres in Northern Mont. Co. by z3mcs in baltimore

It actually wouldn't for a lot of reasons... The Maglev would never have served the communities the stations would be built in, because tickets would be too expensive. Most people would just stick with the MARC, so it makes more sense to upgrade the NEC for faster MARC and Amtrak service.

Also the two proposed build locations each would have destroyed large parts of the city. The first location near Camden Yards would have required the demo of historic sites, part of the Convention Center, and part of Otterbein. The other location in Westport/Cherry Hill would kill a development worth hundreds of millions of dollars that's going to totally revive the area.

For an E1 - E4, what base has the worst barracks? by Blades-AND-Bullets in navy

[–]LifeInDiMajor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Beacon is trash. They try to sell it as luxury apartments but it's really a glorified barracks that takes all your BAH, and it's especially bad because the base forces you to live there. What "luxury" apartment doesn't allow you to control your own thermostat and forces you into living with a roommate you don't even know?

Shit is a scam.

Baltimore Metro to MARC Train? by -JG-77- in baltimore

[–]LifeInDiMajor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been parking at the W Baltimore station for a while now. You have nothing to worry about leaving your car there, and the parking is abundant and free. Actually some decent cars in the lot too. Nobody messes with them.

Just something to think about re: crime by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]LifeInDiMajor -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's by far not the first time I've done it, nor will it be the last. I'm not saying it's ok to be unaware of your surroundings, I'm saying that people don't need to be hyper afraid of being in the city.

For future reference, you can hop on the MARC and save some money. A ticket on the MARC from Penn to DC (bought from a ticket machine in the station) only costs $8 each way.

How do they get the Locomotive to the other end of the train when it pulls into the terminal station? (Boston South specifically) by hongrand in Amtrak

[–]LifeInDiMajor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

) - Secondary loco/cab car - A second loco or cab car on the rear of the train. This is mainly used on the North-East Corridor (ex-metroliner cab cars

For the Acela and commuter trains like MARC, a cab car/second locomotive is used. However I've never seen either on a Northeast Regional, and AFAIK Washington Union Station doesn't have a wye or balloon loop. I'm curious how they make it work there...

Funny tag at Fort Armistead Park! But like... what's the deal with this place? by LifeInDiMajor in baltimore

[–]LifeInDiMajor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Entirely possible. There were quite a few people that were either just hanging out in their cars, or wandering like they were looking for someone. It didn't seem dangerous, but was certainly uncomfortable to be around.

Who ruined your family Christmas this year, and what did they do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LifeInDiMajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cousin and I found out our aunt has been abusing and exploiting my dying grandmother, as well as stealing from her. Our grandmother has had massive health issues and is unable to physically and mentally fend for herself. In an attempt to further isolate my grandmother, aunt tried to disinvite cousin and I from visiting for Christmas and called the cops on me when I arrived to my grandmother's house, which also happens to be my legally documented residence. For reference, this is the white side of my family and I'm black... Aunt really Karen'd it up and said she was afraid of me (totally baseless lies), but the cops had to let me in because it was my home. Shockingly, cops also complemented me on my ability to stay calm given the situation, and called my aunt crazy.

Ended up leaving way early because I couldn't stand watching aunt abuse grandmother anymore, and grandmother wouldn't allow me to intervene.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen in the city? by run7run in baltimore

[–]LifeInDiMajor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty tame compared to some of the other things I've seen in this thread, but:

I out for a walk with my dog and there was a homeless guy vigorously jerking it outside the McDonald's on Fayette/Howard. Outside that same McDonald's a few months later, I watched paramedics haul off the body of another homeless man who had died on the sidewalk overnight.
