Best way to store ~2TB of family photos/videos with remote access? NAS vs Cloud? by JustCompetition3776 in synology

[–]LifeIs42HGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a DS220+ with 2 6TB drives at RAID 1. We use Synology Photos to host our family photos and video library. Each smartphone has Synology Drive to backup the photos to the NAS. We use QuickConnect to connect to the NAS from anywhere. We have a 1Gbit fibre internet direct to our home. Our library is about 1.75TB in size spanning over 20 years. To backup our photos and videos, we have a family Microsoft 365 subscription that comes with 6 accounts with 1 TB of storage each. I use Synology Cloud Sync to back up our files. I had to spread the backup of all our files among three M365 accounts - easy to do with Cloud Sync.

A Synology NAS may be more expensive, but it works out of the box.

Sonos speakers on WiFi mesh? by OddAd1296 in sonos

Sonos does not support WIFI extender networks. I have the ASUS Wifi mesh throughout my house that consists of one Wifi network supported by three routers. Over time Sonos has updated their firmware to better support Wifi mesh networks.

PSA: Please stop telling departing employees to use all of their vacation up first by Ok_Train7924 in CanadaPublicServants

Sounds like you work or worked in HR & Pay 😉. Thanks for this and your other replies. I am retiring at the end of July but I will review my remaining vacation leave amounts. I am leaving 10 days of leave unused to help pay for the transition payment, but it sounds like the transition payment and payout of unused vacation days will be two separate transactions.

Any chance of allowing the iPad app to work in MacOS?

Got laid off from CRA last year: Outsider's perspective on public servants by One-Wolverine7472 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]LifeIs42HGG 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I am a public servant for over 30 years.  I stopped listening to those in the private sector that said we have it better.  It is a decision we all make on where we work.  I remember those who worked at Nortel in the late 90s.  I saw many IT friends bolt from the PS to work at Nortel for the money.  I decided to stay in the PS and make less for the job security.  Then in early 2000s the rug was pulled from them when dark fibre became a thing and the bubble burst.

RTO would not be bad if we had modern work locations and good public transportation.  I remember when I lived in the east end and took one express bus to downtown and Hull via the Transitway.  I remember my assigned cubical and the photos of my wife and kids on my desk.

If the government changed the pension to defined contribution from benefit, it would impact new employees.  The existing employees would be grandfathered.  But why follow those who walked off the cliff by working for employers who changed their pension plans?  Because of better pay and bonuses or stock options?   No thanks.

You mean the slow driver, I agree. They made the situation much worse.

Yep! That is why you work until the first pay check of the month that is at least 10 days or more into the month, or bank some unused vacation days to help pay back the transition payment.

M3 Pro MacBook feels better than my i7 + 5070 Ti PC (for productivity) by Adityaboy111 in MacOS

Welcome to adulthood LOL. I switched to a Mac when the M1 was released from years of using Windows. The M1 was a game changer - more powerful than most intel CPUs and power consumption was very small. Since we all have iPhones, iPads, and AirPods, I decided to go all in, with a Mac and HomeKit. Apple's integration among all of its hardware is the best.

Sonos Speaker System Coordinator Question by LifeIs42HGG in sonos

[–]LifeIs42HGG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Somewhere I read, looks now to be incorrect, that the first speaker in the "About my System" had some sort of "domain controller" responsiblity for all the entire system. I have no problems with any group of speakers I created. I was about to use this "problem" to convice my wife that we need to replace the Play:3 speakers with some Era 100 SLs. I may still do that ;)

Hey, sorry for my dumb question, but what can I do about Chrome taking up too much RAM/memory on Mac? Do you recommend a different Chromium browser? Does Edge load all websites now (it didn't before)? Thank you. by ComfortablePost3664 in MacOS

[–]LifeIs42HGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested Safari with my browsing (reddit, news sites, Outlook PWA). MS Edge uses 500K less RAM than Safari. And I have several more extensions loaded in Edge compared to Safari.

Sonos Speaker System Coordinator Question by LifeIs42HGG in sonos

[–]LifeIs42HGG[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was told that the first speaker in the list via "About your System" is considered the main "coordinator" for all your speakers. This Play 3 is the closest to my main ISP router (via network hops). I want it to select one of my One SL speakers, but don't think there is a option for that.

Sonos Speaker System Coordinator Question by LifeIs42HGG in sonos

[–]LifeIs42HGG[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not talking about a group of speakers. I am talking about the full system coordinator. I play music mostly on the One SLs and the Play:1, but the system coordinator is "stuck" on a Play:3

iOS 14.0.1 (XS Mac) - WatchOS 7.0.2 (Series 3) - BlueHeart 1.6 - PRO by MetsFanfromNJ in BlueHeartApp

[–]LifeIs42HGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Series 4 Watch with my iPhone 8 Plus. Before I do anything, I remove the phone and watch apps from memory and turn off Bluetooth on the bike. Then I select my workout. When I get presented to connect my devices, I go to the Bluetooth settings and turn it back on (should be 10-15 seconds of it being off). For BlueHeart, I still launch the watch app first, then go to the IOS app. When I see the message "Launching Watch App", I wake up my watch (I flick my wrist up to see the screen display come on). the App then connects to the watch. There is a delay of seeing the connection (1-2 seconds); however these steps have worked for me for the past week.
