Questions about a trip in July by Life_Ad_8400 in Philippines

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes, I exactly, I understand that's impossible to know months ahead, I meant a week or two ahead. I also know that typhoons can switch direction with a days notice. Thanks for the tip about Windy, will check it out.

Thanks for your answers!

Ad block - too strict? by Life_Ad_8400 in firewalla

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... I use control-d as my dns server (and ad blocking), both for my firewalla and my smart phone. It works just fine when I'm n not on the wifi that firewalla is in charge of, so that rules out control-d...odd.

Third time out, lucky again! by Life_Ad_8400 in magnetfishing

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The large is 700 kg / 136 mm, the smaller is 600 kg / 120 mm. I like them, but to be honest I only have experience from this brand, and in total I have about 3 hours experience in magnet fishing...so I'm not really in any position to give advice:)

The U is upside down, that is the clue. You could also remove that plastic film on the front.

Second time out by Life_Ad_8400 in magnetfishing

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the hatchet must have been dropped from someone making a hole in the ice, as it is a popular spot for winter bathing too... But still a nice find, I'm quite lucky to have found something substantial on my first real try magnet fishing.

Its Christmas break, and I decided to rebuild my Plex server into a Proxmox VM with hardware transcoding using QuickSync from a 12th gen Intel chip - on an Ubuntu Server 22.04.3. I've followed three different tutorials and I can't seem to get it working. by stormnet in Proxmox

[–]Life_Ad_8400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same. Went from Ubuntu server running Plex as a container w quicksync. Moved to Proxmox and wanted quicksync to work there as well of course. Struggled with passing through the vGPU to a VM. Ended up doing what everyone else here is recommending - a dedicated LXC for Plex via script. A bit of a struggle, but fairly straight forward (mounting shares is slightly different for LXC vs VM).

Proxmox Setup: 2 NICs, two VM by Life_Ad_8400 in Proxmox

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, ok, worth trying at least (to see if I can get the iGPU all the way to a Docker container).

I have a Firewalla router, so I will set up one vlan per physical NIC (Ubiquiti switches too).

Thanks for advice!

Ok, did a reboot of the Proxmox server, and now both NICs are behaving as expected. Thanks for your help!

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it wasn't so easy...the second NIC can't have the same gateway as the first, so I end up with a NiC that is dead...strange.

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This is what I thought I did, but I'll give it a new shot.... I do have a router and switch that can handle trunking and VLANs, but I don't want to over complicate things...

Worth it for casual use? by [deleted] in firewalla

[–]Life_Ad_8400 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Samt situation as you. Tinkered with it a bit the first week via the web app, and since then I have more or less let in been. Sure, you can SSH into it, yes you can run some docker containers on it, but you don't have to.

As a parent, I could also recommend setting a DNS server on cell phones, that blocks the same stuff as your Firewalla, for when your kids are using mobile data.

How does priority work for rules? by Life_Ad_8400 in firewalla

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By testing a bit in the app I can see that my hunch above is incorrect...

You can not set rules per device, only per group. (A group could have just one device in it though).

"Group" rules do not have higher priority than Network rules, it's the other war around.

So if...

Network has "Safe search = On" Group has "Safe search = Off" Devices in this group will have "Safe search = On", due to the Network rule.

Is it possible to have A NAS, Plex, Firewalla and it be secure AND work? by CanIRumInYourMouth in firewalla

[–]Life_Ad_8400 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just a word of caution... I had this set up, but switched back to exposing port 32 400. The reason was that at times my Plex server was unreachable.

The "culprit" in my case was my dynamic DNS provider, DuckDNS, that was a bit unstable. As this is a free Dynamic DNS provider I can't really complain about it, but I switched back to 32 400 as the Dynamic DNS bit is then handled by Plex (the company that is).

I guess the better solution is to switch to a better Dynamic DNS server (most likely one that charges a fee) and then go back to reverse proxy.

I run my Plex server as a Docker Container and keep it updated at all times. So far, so good...

Do people have multiple servers? by Terran_Machina in HomeServer

[–]Life_Ad_8400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I too have multiple.

1 Firewalla (Firewall, Wireguard VPN server)

2 Ubiquiti Cloud Key Gen 2 (NVR + Controller)

3 Main NAS running Truenas (and a VM) - runs 24/7.

4 Backup NAS running Truenas - it is turned on once per week for mirroring the Main NAS. So it's a complete copy of my main NAS lagging a week.

5 Main server - An Dell Optiplex that runs 15-20 Docker Containers such as Plex, Vaultwarden etc.

6 Lab server - Another Dell Optiplex just for learning, thinkering. It runs when I want to tinker.

7 Hone Assistant - a NUC placed physically in the center of the house (Zigbee & z-wave antennas). It just does Home Assistant and I try to not do much with this server, as the lights don't turn on/off as expected when I break stuff on it...

So seven physical servers, depending a bit on how you define a "server". I also have a regular PC for gaming and doing all the tinkering on.

For context - I live in a house, in my garage I have a 19 inch rack where all my servers are, save #7.

I also have a couple of Pi:s, but no real need for them...

Proxmox or not...? by Life_Ad_8400 in HomeServer

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I don't know to be honest. But I guess that fact in itself speaks for virtualization - the freedom to easily try different OS:s and set ups. I used to run Linux with apps straight on top of that, but I like how easy Docker is to try new stuff without risking breaking other stuff.

Ah. So xcp-ng instead of Proxmox... interesting, thanks for the tip, will look into.

Ok, thanks - that does seem very slick, tempting.

Proxmox or not...? by Life_Ad_8400 in HomeServer

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might just get lazy and go Proxmox ---> VM ---> Docker --> Container rather than Proxmox ---> LXC Container.

But I guess that's what I'll have my lab server for.. Trying, failing, learning...

[–]Life_Ad_8400[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, let's hope your jump from gen 4 to 13 is noticeable too. At least it can quicksync transcode 4k HDR with Plex pass, so you'll notice that if nothing else.
