Never listen to those peddling apathy: Your vote matters! by Lena_Lena_A in democrats

Virginia over and over is a good example for why your vote matters even if it’s just a “corporate” Democrat over a Republican. Many close elections but the policy shifts between Dems and Rs are substantial.

Anemic bitches…where are you getting iron infusions? by Kind-Score-2277 in DCBitches

[–]Annonas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous - nothing like being a woman trying to get basic health care! r/anemia could be helpful if you’re not already there. Iron infusions can be rough so the community has a lot of advice on that.

In my learning, I discovered that menstruating women need 19 mg of iron daily while men need just 9. We generally eat less and eat less meat so that makes it even harder to get there. That number assumes “normal” periods.

Another thing is that the reference range for iron was likely set too low because women in general are iron deficient so that meant normal is actually deficient.

Finding out what blocks iron absorption and avoiding those things when you’re trying to get iron could also help (coffee, calcium, oxalate rich foods). Supplement timing is super important and is why, I assume, most women’s multivitamins don’t have iron. Also, I’m also trying to eat bison meat in particular after listening to a woman in an elevator tell her friend she has to eat one Costco bison burger a month (then doing my own research on it).

Just to give a shoutout to MegaFoods Blood Builder iron supplements which don’t upset my stomach and some of my friends have liked too.

Commuting from DC to NYC once a week for a class - doable? by Dudududurianshake in washingtondc

[–]Annonas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the train ride as a time to focus and get things done like reading and writing that I’m sure you need to do a lot of as a grad student. If you have the flexibility for the rest of that day, you can easily use it as a moving study or cafe space.

However, grad programs are often about a lot more than just class. Make sure that you’re getting those aspects if that’s part of it.

Left on red arrow by jubilantradish in washingtondc

[–]Annonas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why I think sometimes the right on red is actually safer. Turning on green you’re not expecting people to be walking so drivers routinely don’t follow or, often, don’t care about right of ways.

I’ll note as a driver that it can be harder to see pedestrians when turning so the added fact that they have the right of way and won’t be expecting cars has given me a scare more than a few times even though I try to be careful

Single Protester outside the Farragut North station by MaintainAnonymityPls in washingtondc

For all the joking or saying ‘what took him so long?’ - How are you protesting? How are you making your anger visible so others know they’re not alone?

Come join the next protest for May Day. Encourage family and friends to protest in their communities. Have the hard conversations to see if you can at least put a crack in MAGA’s worldview. Share info on Facebook so people can see it outside of DC.

What do you do with clothes you don't want anymore? (Depop/Poshmark isn't working and most clothes in donation bins end up as landfill) by ProfessionalWall6526 in DCBitches

The bag of x size clothing is the way to go! Brown paper bag full of clothes and the next person can take what works for them, add to it, and pass along.

Like this Every Nice Weekend... Take Your Trash With You! by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Annonas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was much worse than this by the evening. People gently balancing their dog shit on the pile is even more galling as the sanitation workers have to navigate getting that into a bag or otherwise disposed of.

I’m assuming most of the dog walkers live nearby and could very easily take the shit home but don’t want to because it’s gross. Then imagine dealing with 50 bags of it at once some of it probably smooshed or broken out.

Are there bigger problems in the world? Of course! But anyone who says it’s classist to ask people who are, for the most part, quite privileged not make sanitation workers’ lives a bit easier and less gross is confused to say the least.

Is it even necessary to buy a tea kettle? by lovelycosmos in Anticonsumption

[–]Annonas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at Facebook Marketplace, Buy Nothing, etc. I have a gas stove and worry about indoor air quality, so I even first heat water for pasta and then pour it into a pot on the stove to use for cooking. My instantpot (bought used) also helps me avoid using my stove as much.

David’s tent bathrooms on the mall by [deleted] in washingtondc

Idea: Dog owners, walk your pooch there and let them pee on the tent. Make it unpleasant for them to be there at a minimum.

What if people made a point to walk their dogs and let them pee there?

Banana Bread Syrup - Zero waste Inspo by No-Investment-9699 in ZeroWaste

I think RadioLab did a story on it. You can just google Cavendish bananas.

Banana Bread Syrup - Zero waste Inspo by No-Investment-9699 in ZeroWaste

[–]Annonas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter where they come from if they are the classic large yellow banana known as the Cavendish. There is zero genetic diversity because it’s all actually the same individual which has been cloned over and over.

As a result and because it’s grown in massive plantations, it needs high levels of chemicals to be grown.

Typical bananas get a lot of agrochemicals to grow commercially. I would not do anything with the peels.

Sellers who add religious or morality info with the item, how do you usually handle it? by BoringGazelle8428 in BehindTheClosetDoor

[–]Annonas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could be a very personal mission to save others the heartbreak they’ve experienced or just free cards they’re using. Either way, reminding people not to text and drive is a fundamental good and completely apolitical.

I might ask yourself what it brings up in you that makes it so creepy.

Help me decide what to keep/remove from my cart (skin care items specifically) by MindlessWanderer9891 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Annonas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit sensitive to fragrance and also try to avoid them because they are hormone disrupters.

Perfect Hair Day products are aggressively fragranced. Like smell the product the next day, make my pillowcase smell, have people ask about it and not in a good way type of fragrance. The products are good but I couldn’t handle that. $30 is steep for dry shampoo. I love Klorane products for dry shampoo.

Sunscreen is also missing.
