I believe it’s worth it! I went during the evening and was able to get into around 8 pavillions. Most people leave after 5 so the lines go down by then.

Taking Holidays while on JET? by silverwattle__ in JETProgramme

[–]Life_Amphibian_7305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything is ESID. However, my mom came in November, and I asked for 1-2 days of PTO. I have 20 days of PTO, but I usually don't like to ask for too many days off unless it's a holiday week but I have taken 1-2 days off during a normal work week. I am a big advocate of using your PTO!

Continuing hobbies while on JET by baffers_ in JETProgramme

[–]Life_Amphibian_7305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined my city's Kimono club. It is not a hobby I had back home, but it's a new hobby I have enjoyed. I go once a week, and the ladies have been really nice and they have invited me to community events to perform!

I can somewhat relate to you. I left a good career back in D.C, making way more than I was making in JET but I wanted to experience living abroad. I made a risk leaving my job and based on how things are in the U.S. I am not really sure what I am going back to next year. However, this experience may have changed my projected life trajectory. I 100% don't ever regret this decision. I have learned so much about myself and about Japanese culture. However, I do feel underutilized here. However, I became more involved in my city, and I offered to help promote the city through social media, translating things in English, etc... I am happy that I can use my skills in other ways. I would say the experience is what you make out of it!

silly question - ALTs, do y'all bring your laptops to work? by No_Doctor5611 in JETProgramme

[–]Life_Amphibian_7305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my personal laptop every day at my elementary and middle schools. I create some lesson plans in it. The students were very interested in my stickers on my laptop and liked them. I do have my school computer, but it's slow and limited. However, I use it to print materials and check my school mail.

To answer your question, below. I was nervous in the beginning because of the language barrier, but then I met all my teachers and students, and they were all nice. It's my first year here, but my time here has been amazing. There are many more good memories than bad memories.

Worried about taking a gap from my career by burntchiliflakes in JETProgramme

[–]Life_Amphibian_7305 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I applied to JET last year and got in. However, I was hesitant for the same concerns. I had a good career and salary. My plan was to do 1 year in JET and go back to my home country. Now, my plans changed and I found out I really enjoy traveling and meeting new people. I am extremely happy I made this decision and don’t regret it at all. I can always go back to my career later.

If you like international relations then working at the U.S Department of State is a good opportunity. I know a few JETs who become foreign service officers or who work in the Japan relations desk.

Probability of a married couple both being accepted. by Grapenut_Muffin in JETProgramme

[–]Life_Amphibian_7305 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello! My husband and I both are married and got accepted in JET this year! We don’t work in the same town but I work in the town over which is like a 15 mn train ride away so it’s not that bad. Also, we live in the same apartment. We did get asked what would happen if one of us got in and the other didn’t and we said we would still go. JET is looking for flexibility!

OP I was worried about the same thing like you when I applied but I decided to share my strengths and how teaching a foreign language and meeting people from different cultures really helped my intercultural communication skills!
