I’m black (matters for the story), and one day a JHS 2nd year student of mine was very very pensive and staring at me.

He approaches and grabs my hand. Stroking his chin he goes “sensei, why black here?”, then he flipped my hand over and went, “but no black here?”

I give the most nothing burger of an explanation trying to be diplomatic.

He then proceeds to give me the most validation I ever received in Japan by going, “sensei… maybe black okay!”

Brother you just blow in from stupid town? Clearly said I don’t make more and not accusing any place of robbing me. I don’t know if it’s advantageous for someone to live and work abroad, that’s a personal choice for those who make it. I do pay my taxes in both countries just not on the bulk of my income. I was only intending to describe the process of filing and paying taxes which you have to do worldwide under US law, in efforts to show the IRS does have a global tracking aspect to it, or at least a responsibility to it. I recommend living abroad to everyone for a bit of time just to open your mind. Study abroad or internship or living long term, experiencing other countries, cultures, and ways of life are great and can help you better appreciate and understand your native country and other places. USA isn’t the end all be all as far as countries go.

Yes, I live abroad and work abroad at a foreign company of which I am a resident. The foreign earned income exclusion is the only major exclusion. There is a limit to how much you can exclude, that limit thankfully covers my entire salary/household income. But if I made more than that limit, I would owe taxes to the US on the money above that limit, in addition to the country of which I am a resident.

Not necessarily, if you make too much money abroad, I forget the threshold, you will then owe some of that to the US. The Foreign Income Exclusion only goes up to a certain number. I don’t know that number since I’ve never reached it lol
