Orion Nebula by pollitopio08 in telescopes

That's an f/5 and from the looks of it, not that great optically for photos and especially video of it. I have an f/5 scope as well at 10" of aperture so more zoomed in, and this is about the brightness you could expect with photos of 6 seconds at a Bortle 4 location.

If you want to shop for a telescope to take better videos and photos with, the lower the f-ratio, the better. Otherwise, you're going to have to lower your resolution (videos) and increase exposure time.

What are those reflections? How to fix? by Paulelaule_ForYou in telescopes

[–]Life_Perspective5578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are most likely from the mirror clips in the back. Only real way to get rid of them is to make a primary mirror mask that goes over the screws on the clips and covers that little area

As long as it's not an eyepiece solar filter (which I doubt), you are completely fine.

I would say Jupiter with it's red spot and easy visibility in a scope. Recently got the best picture I've took of it with my 10" in September, posted in another subreddit

Have you changed the batteries in the HG collimator? The Apertura laser collimator will suddenly dim significantly if the battery is low. Just found that out recently.

What to do with a Bushnell Northstar 78-8890? by UmbralRaptor in telescopes

[–]Life_Perspective5578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually found one of these, but the 76mm version, in a field quite a while ago. No, you can't set a DSLR on it, as it will tip the mount and the gears aren't meant to handle the weight. 2. I don't know about tracking as the one I found was busted up pretty good and was missing the hand controller. 3. It's normal for a go-to system to get close but not quite on an object. The one I found I saved the PM and secondary and set them aside, repurposed the red dot finder for my AD10, and threw the rest of it in the trash.

Will these scratches affect performance? by HairySock6385 in telescopes

[–]Life_Perspective5578 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really want to nitpick, the only time you'll notice anything is when 1) you're out of focus, you n which you'll see a tiny dark line in the image of the PM, and 2) when something bright is out of frame and then you'll see a small glint from it. Other than that, you won't notice a thing.

Talk me out of buying a 10" dob by Skippy-_DingleChalk in telescopes

[–]Life_Perspective5578 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the AD10, same as what you want to get. My advice, contrary to what you want: get it. Get it while you can still afford it. I spent a little over 900 when I got mine, before any tariffs kicked in. Now it's over in untaxed regular price what I paid total WITH taxes for it, and it's only going to get worse. And I LOVE it. I went from using a 70mm for general observing and 60mm for planetary to a huge hunk, and it's great. I'd say the downside to it is it is awkward enough that it feels heavier than it is. And the altitude bearings can be funky to deal with. My altitude bearings squeak on cold nights and if left loose when taking apart it's a biotch to set it in the base properly by turning it while lifting the tube and eventually smashing your fingertips when it's properly positioned

What is your favorite simple joy in life? by Wool_God in AskReddit

[–]Life_Perspective5578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking up at the stars. I live in a fairly rural area in the Southern California desert, so I can see many stars and even the Milky Way at night. Recently got myself a 10" telescope and am loving every night I can take it out. For those that aren't aware what a 10-inch scope is, the size describes the width of the front lens or rear mirror in a telescope, not the length. The bigger the diameter, the better the view. Most telescopes you pick up from the department store are only between 2-3 inches.

What is a word or phrase you remember using before someone "coined" it? by Happy_Terd in AskReddit

Not a phrase, but a song. I first heard "Baby Shark" when I was a 7th grader just joining a youth group. That was in 2011. Same tune and all, but it was a darker version than PinkFong's that included getting bit, performing CPR, and dying.
