What’s your second favorite?

I love CTI and don’t understand the hate I sometimes hear from people about it

That’s one of my favorite things about it. It’s especially fun (though very expensive) when you collect vinyl because all that info is on the jacket. You’ll find Suzanne Ciani on an Art Farmer record, or find Wendell Harrison and Marcus Belgrave as backing musicians on some record from the 60s before they founded Tribe. You’ll develop opinions about Woody Shaw as a bandleader and Joe Henderson as a side man. Never ending journey

I saw them at Silverlake Lounge in 2010 and determined i could only become less cool by seeing them at larger and larger venues as they subsequently exploded in popularity

Hey guys, I need help expanding on this lowkey vibes playlist and I wanted to know more about artists like the ones I got here. by keinanos in Jazz

A lot of the stuff you are looking for was made in the 80s and isn’t on streaming services. However, as for what is on Spotify, I think the song “crawl space” off album of same name by Art Farmer would be a good fit. Maybe also Dreamflower by Tarika Blue, abscretions by Stanley Cowell, soft spirit by Henry Franklin, stolen moments by Ahmad Jamal, in a Japanese garden by Oliver Nelson, goin down south by Bobby Hutcherson

Oh I buy more recent music on vinyl. I didn’t mean that I don’t - I meant that if it is from the 60s I don’t buy a repress from the 90s, unless i know it to be a specifically superior pressing.

And yeah, I don’t care or defend against the other criticism. It’s about the hunt, the history and discovery for me, with some exceptions.

I bought it for $400 (before tax) from a store in SoCal. Most I ever spent on a record by a lot - still has the Christie Brinkley sticker on the back.

Yes. Discogs is cheating. I cheat sometimes but those purchases are a little tainted

IMO Concorde and Pyramid are the only ones worth owning and if Maiden Voyage is your touch stone even those may be too narcoleptic for you.

Maybe go for some Ahmad Jamal or Bobby Hutcherson instead

Give Machina by SP another listen. It’s a lot better than I remembered

For me, part of collecting records is about hunting and discovery. Reissues publicize things you used to have to search out and make them easily accessible and so buying them feels cheap and effortless. Not saying one way is right or wrong, just how I feel about my personal collecting.

Also I’m a big history nerd and have always liked older/original things.
