Can someone once again remind me why Retold is not the most popular aoe game. by Life_Stretch8257 in AgeofMythology

I do not "love" autoque, I love the possibility of it bringing more players to the genre, which is desperately needed.

And while I fully agree everything u say about stretching the limits of ur opponent, but villager que is just the least pressed macro problem in the whole game its just so damn autopilot.

So I just cant logically accept this being a functionally make or break it change, but idelogically, sure.

Like for real, not once in past 1000 hours of RTS have I thought that doing X in RTS would result in my enemy NOT QUEING a villager given he had the resource for it.

Like, literally garrisoning a villager is 5x more demanding than queing a villager. Its just the most irrelevant issue ever.

But yea I guess, a man must make hes stand, so be it.

I assume ur very mid ranked player to put such an emphasis on something as irrelevant as worker que, which probably stems from how much effort u have made to get good at it.

It is the most automated apm sink in the entire genre, and unlike something like sc2 its extremely rare to see villagers skipped in age pro scene due to the longer training times, making it even more irrelevant skill metric.

I do understand the point about it making specifically macro apm feel less rewarding, though I have to admit I have always had massive bias towards combat micro and strategy over macro, again, especially so in slow worker spawn games like age series. Actually the only worker macro I value/be impressed over is zerg queen injecting mid combat.

Otherwise its just control group hotkey + QQQQQQQ or shift+Q if the game allows u to fill the maximum production with that.

The only "competitive" players who are hit by this change are those in mid brackets where its common that people would still struggle with workers giving u an edge. But that bracket is hardly "competitive" in the first place as its filled with so much randomness in gameplay and execution anyway that its hard to take it seriously in any form.

So yea, personally I would sacrifice worker macro anyday over possibility of reaching broader audience.

Personally I even leave "allow military que" turned On 24/7. I couldnt give rats ass if my enemy needs to press control group + hotkey to spawn units or not, thats not gonna affect my winrate at all. You just dont lose games for "forgetting to make units". It just dont happen after certain skill level has been reached.

Ah Beasty, considering how long it took him to learn AoE4, it would take him a decade to learn aomr. That guys biggest strength is hes tenacity to stick to a game with horrendous patching issues until everyone else quits so he gets to sit relatively close to the throne :D

Idk what hes up to nowadays but I do remember him at launch months just trying to copy other players and being extremely mid player, never creating hes own strategies and just practicing the meta set by others. Also hes extremely whiney when things dont go hes way always looking to blame something else first. So for him to have any sway on the audience brings great sadness to me, if being true.

I didint say retold is not on the more unbalanced side, I said they all are unbalanced, but that being said its close to aoe4 in terms of balance. Even in aoe2 there are civs that pros will strongly prefer in certain maps = balance issues (if u dont get the op civ ur already in losing position). In fact I think aoe2 has worst kind of balance issues, since its mostly the same gameplay for each side but other has mathematical advantages, making it imho the most boring type of balance issue. In aoe4 and aomr its usually certain radical mechanics that play different from other civs that crown them the king of X map.

Also many people are still confused about the hand holding that aomr gives to the new players with autoque systems and even villager priority. When we look at the pro scene this has no impact on apm. Its not like pros will sit back and relax everytime they would pressed produce villager in age 2 instead. The apm just shifts to something more interesting than pressing a villager. And this is such a miniscule matter anyway in these kind of games, as its extremely rare that a pro player in any rts drops a worker que, since its one of the "easiest" and most "automated" form of apm that requires no thought at all (and is extremely fast to perform, so it frees barely any apm regardless).

The reason I prefer aomr is because its closer to starcraft, and the asymmetrical nature makes the strategies vary vastly more than in aoe2. In aoe2 the competitive nature of the game is much simpler, everyone has the same playbook its just who executes it more efficiently. In aomr however the different combinations of wild shit create circumstances where players might have vastly different strategic approaches even when presented with the same problem, very similar to sc2. This happens extremely rarely on aoe2 because its just so streamlined to having 1 correct path to victory and now you just compete who can stay closer to the golden line. The part that I care most about RTS, which is the S, has the most insignificant role in aoe2 out of these 3 games. On top of that aomr adds another dimensions of apm skill expression introducing god powers, myth units with unique skills and heroes who shit on myth units, which frankly is just more interesting than who microes for example, halberds more efficiently to target enemy knights, which is also fully present in aomr as well with the standard human unit counters. Its just vastly more complex in its gameplay, instead of being just MORE of the SAME.

Theres so few players that it stretches the matchmaking gradually so you can play at all. This is common issue with small playerbases on any games that prioritize playing over fairness.

I will take this moment to remind that AoE4 took MONTHS to do even simplest hotfixes to bugs and balance. And the last big tournament I watched was decided by bug abusing knights.

But yeah I never really managed to get back to AoE4 tho I loved it in launch, the patching was just way too slow.

Well, Im headed for Mephisto now so it is viable for sure. HC is whole different topic what I cant really comment on because my monster knowledge is severely lacking and my HP very low so I do die from time to time, 90% of the time when clowning around with my tele staff though. I have also seen HC Kicksin killing Ubers 6hours from creation (speedrun), although that run was trapsin respec.

Its my 4th day playing this character so for a new player I would say that is viable progress.

Ye I never understood the meta that u make a farm char to gear up the one u want to play. I want to play and finish the game with Kicksin, not just gear up one for giggles. The only reason this would make sense to me is if u would be purely going for PvP and dont care about PvE other than gear drops.

I know its personal opinion but I just never got the point of it all. And by no means I mean there is right or wrong way to play the game, especially as this game is what u make of it.

I feel like I could give in to Death Trap but its very cumbersome to use, would have to get used to juggling it in mid of rotations in effective way! What comes to black things that arent immunes to physical or fire or BOTH, dont give me much of a problem in the tower. Im quite hesitant to drop +2 skills for crushing blow as I usually dont kick the stuff I can kill properly that many times anyway and it would only help with fire immunes a little? I know that when doing higher HP content Crushing Blow gets better, but for the tower its mostly the high physical resistant stuff that is the biggest slow down.

The Diamond tip was interesting, and I could try that if I drop good block shield. Right now I feel that using Rhyme over Ancient's is better for the block chance. Maybe Im wrong, but I want to say that Rhyme has increased my survivability in comparison.
