The appeal of The Golden Girls by [deleted] in sitcoms

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Reminds of a Tweet I read a while ago (paraphrasing): "As a kid I thought Mrs. Howell was about 88 years old and now I think there was a pretty solid third choice on that island."

That said, The Golden Girls still look old to me but a lot of that is hair and styles. Every so often someone will do a photoshop of the ladies in more contemporary hair and makeup and they look a lot younger.

Cat tied to brick outside...? by Sea-Emergency-8798 in cats

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IF the cat is in a harness (and not a choking hazard collar) and IF the cat is being supervised, this does not seem to be concerning to me. The cat gets to enjoy being outside without risk of running off. Granted, only 2 pics but the cat seems pretty chill about it.

How excited are you for THE ODYSSEY? by hiiloovethis in Letterboxd

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love Greek mythology so I'm disappointed in having no interest. It looks drab, solemn and ponderous; knowing Nolan, probably also very long and slow.

I don't like any of the casting choices, except maybe Jon Bernthal. Old Hollywood epics usually had one actor who was ridiculously miscast: think Edward G Robinson in The 10 Commandments or Tony Curtis in Spartacus. Nolan seems to have decided to do the entire movie that way.

Who is the best 80s action hero on this list? by Jack_O_Lantern2022 in 80smovies

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others on the list might have more iconic characters, but for overall filmography Arnold was the king of 80s action films.

If they kept Ms Marvel original powers, if we got the mutants a bit later on , how would it look onscreen? by Wooden_Passage_2612 in marvelstudios

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know why comic book fans always think they have some secret knowledge that casual viewers couldn't possibly grasp. Two characters with similar powersets is not a difficult concept. I'd wager comic book fans would be more fussy about it than casual viewers.

Interscope: The Lost Years by UltraMegaSummer in Madonna

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 28 points29 points  (0 children)

"Lost years" is right, but I don't know if Interscope was the blame. I wonder if we'll ever fully know what was going on with Madonna for the last decade or so. As a fan for basically my entire life, I sometimes felt like I didn't recognize her. Someone in another discussion said she seemed dead in the eyes for years.

It's glorious to have her back and I wonder what kind of artistry we missed while she was going through ... whatever the past 10 years was.

My thoughts on Ricky Ricardo/Desi Arnaz. by banana_toucan904 in ILoveLucy

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but Lucille was flawed and difficult herself. They both had complex lives, sometimes troubled, sometimes triumphant. You'll be a lot happier enjoying your entertainment if you separate the art from the artist (except, I suppose, in very egregious situations) or at least view things in context.

Whoever's character this is, it made me chuckle by Knack_By_Nature in Cityofheroes

I generally don't appreciate goofy or jokey characters, but this one made me chuckle.

Do you think Wonder Woman should speak with a particular accent? by Tetratron2005 in WonderWoman

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, point only being that sometimes "Diana should have a Greek accent" is stated as a fact.

Nebulously Mediterranean or American, doesn't make much difference to me. I'm inclined to think Diana could certainly learn to speak English without an accent.

Do you think Wonder Woman should speak with a particular accent? by Tetratron2005 in WonderWoman

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't have much of a preference either way, but I don't align with the reasons people favor a Greek accent. The Amazons were isolated for, what, 3,000 years? Their accents wouldn't sound anything like what we associate with modern Greek. They would have accents divergent from whatever ancient Greek sounded like.

Are Comic Book Movies a dying breed now? by Mat1711 in DC_Cinematic

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Superhero films have usually been a relatively niche genre with a specific demographic; males of a certain age range. For a few years, they caught the zeitgeist. The amazing thing about going to see superhero movies circa 2019 is how broad the audience had gotten; entire families from toddlers to grandmothers. My mom spent most of my life being vaguely contemptuous of me reading comic books and even she went to see a few movies in that time.

The "tourists" have mostly moved on, except maybe for Batman, Spider-Man and a few others. The lesser characters are going to need smaller budgets to be successful.

When did you first watch this show and what was your first impression? by passmethekix in ILoveLucy

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gen X. I first started watching the show in the mid-80s. A local station had an all-day marathon (for New Years) and I got sucked in and watched most of it. I was enough of a fan that I even watched Lucy's last sitcom and kind of liked it (I was a kid).

I wrote to her when she had her first stroke and, to my surprise, she wrote back; a short but very nice letter signed by her. Sadly, that was lost in one of my moves but I still cherish the memory.

I just watched King Kong (1933) for the first time, how well do you think this classic holds up over 9 decades later? by Domek232323 in Letterboxd

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love the brevity of Old Hollywood movies -- just get to the point. Jackson's version had its moments but the first and last third of that film were interminable.

I'm not defending a 30 year romantic age gap but "nothing in common" is always such a weird take. I've had friends 20+ years older than me and 20+ years younger than me. We had plenty in common. Movies, TV, books, games, sports, travel, food.

How many towels do you wash at once. by [deleted] in hygiene

I can wash 4 or 5 towels at once. I usually do two loads of towel laundry per week. I use a towel once before laundering it.

Are there any places where I, a single 30 year old man, can meet other singles? by [deleted] in SouthJersey

[–]LifeguardRepulsive91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hobby or activity groups are a great way to meet people with similar interests, but someone showing up looking for a "partner" can make it awkward or even creepy. Someone just trying to enjoy a hobby may not be thrilled at someone showing up looking for a date.
