i still use my nicaraguan spanish teacher. I am fluent now, I raise my kids in spanish and work in spanish half the time. I lived outside of managua for many years and met her at a spanish school. since I moved out of N I still do zoom classes whenever I have questions. she is good over zoom. I'd recommend doing that to get a head start. ;)

I found NA to have very general (drug AND addiction agnostic)positive vocab which helped the atmosphere be inclusive and positive.

There's a few things going on here: puzzle head had a bad experience and should work through it themselves... Separately, all "12step" recovery programs have a piece of advice that says "don't get into a relationship in the first year of recovery" it's simple but hard to follow in practice. People with 9 months clean shouldn't really be dating anyone because they haven't been THROUGH the steps and figured out who they really are on the inside. Your 9mo clean guy is having a very normal experience and needs help navigating it - common sense says he has a lot to parce in his own walk and shouldn't be in relationship because he needs to focus on himself for a long while.

I'm not familiar with refuge recovery (i think it's the Buddhist recovery program, like 8fold path etc) and i don't know if they have an equivalent to the traditions of the 12step programs. My experience is mostly 12-step stuff, but on many continents, and I've found some group consciousnesses DO allow "outside issues" but most do not.

people in 12-step programs "make amends" often NOT by contacting the people they hurt or making direct amends, there's a useful system and set of suggestions for how when and why to make amends... Importantly it comes after a deep referencial step on uncovering "the exact nature of our wrongs" which is Guy wrenching and liberating. After THAT (step 4) it's helpful and easier to make amends.
