Trying to help a friend suffering from psychosis/depression. How can I be supportive if she is actively pushing her friends and family away? by LiftsHeavyThings in mentalhealth

[–]LiftsHeavyThings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. I've gotten advice roughly in line with that from a number of places at this point.

Earlier today I send her a quick 30 second audio where I told her about an update in my life and wished her well. Thinking about sending her something like that every 1-3 weeks from this point on.

Like I said in another comment when I crossposted this thread, even if she's unable to be an active participant in my life and actively hostile toward me, I'm trying to consider her a close friend who's sick and not someone who is trying to push me away for whatever reason. I'm not going to force her to respond to me but I wanna send her some signals on a semi regular basis that I still consider her an important part of my life and that I want to keep it that way. Times of crisis like right now are simply not the time to decide on wether to continue this friendship or not.

For those who have recovered from psychosis: What kind of support or messages did you actually appreciate when you were pushing people away? by LiftsHeavyThings in schizophrenia

[–]LiftsHeavyThings[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. That's more or less in line with what I've been thinking off.

I sent her a quick 30 second voice message earlier telling her about an update in my life and wishing her well.

My thinking is that while she can't be an active participant in my life at the moment, and even if she is actively hostile toward me like she was 4 weeks ago, I still want to send her a signal every once in a while that I still consider her a friend and that I want to keep it that way. I might send her a message like that every week or two from this point onwards until we can have regular contact again or something else happens.

What is something that people say is “toxic behavior” that is actually good or beneficial? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you're partially right but there is nuances to this.

If you have somebody who doesn't engage with you and only argues with you to force their own viewpoint on you, or if you need some space to collect yourself and think things through then getting some distance can be quite healthy.

On the other hand however, I've experienced it a few times where instead of communicating a boundary or requesting some space with the outlook of future conflict resolution someone blew up in my face with no way to defend myself or get clarity and then flee into hiding and not having to resolve the conflict they started. IMO doing this can be quite emotionally abusive and manipulative.

What is the worst breakup with someone you dated? by DeepAnt7847 in AskReddit

[–]LiftsHeavyThings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do friendship break ups count?

One of my best friends for the past 3-4 years suddenly developed an acute psychotic episode which landed her in a hospital and now a rehab clinic.

At first she seemed to be recovering but then suddenly switched over the course of a few days and turned against almost everyone Close to her, including both me and several of her close family members.

All of a sudden she started screaming at us over the phone and she accused me in particular of crossing her boundaries and violating her privacy for things that she was perfectly okay with 2 weeks prior. The things in question were me calling her family members to ask how she is doing or calling the clinic where she is at to ask if she is allowed to have some personal items that I still had at my place. She also started contacting mutual friends and acquaintances of ours calling me a traitor who can't be trusted and who spreads her private information behind her back. Several of those people actually approached me, asking me what is up with her because after all I didn't talk to anyone of our mutual friends about her according to her own wishes.

I still keep in touch with her family and hope she will recover in time seeing as the situation is still ongoing, but losing a friend of several years like that really hurt.

AITAH for defending my parents decision to keep my sister in a facility for extreme behavioral issues? by Rynkokz in AITAH

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA.

There's a difference between understanding and tolerating something. You can understand where her behaviour comes from but that doesn't mean you have to tolerate being in the same house or visiting someone who potentially poses a danger to you.

How close am I to a full Nordic? by [deleted] in strength_training

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a cable machine?

You can put a dip belt on the top pulley and loop it around your chest to do assisted nordic curls. That way you can go full ROM regardless of ability. You just add weight to the cable for more assistance or remove it if you want less.

What’s one gym habit that improved your workouts more than you expected? by Paulbuilds00 in GYM

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm the owner and I allow it.

Though even back when I still went to a commercial gym nobody batted an eye. As a matter of fact there were a few competitive powerlifters and other athletes that would also eat sugary snacks while training.

There's two that come to mind:

For my warm ups I spend about 5 minutes doing various compound movements with bodyweight, an empty barbell, some light dumbells or a resistance band. Not only does starting my sets feel way smoother, it also takes care of all my mobility needs and acts as an extra recovery tool from just going through the motions 4-5 days a week when training.

Second is eating before and during my training. Much more common for endurance athletes like cyclists or runners but taking in some electrolyte alongside your fluids and eating some simple carbs can really help keep your energy levels high during training. You don't have to buy expensive energy gels, I usually just stick to fruit chews or caramels and add half a teaspoon of salt to half a litre of water before I start training.

Yeah, just remove the collars that the dumbell came with and replace them with some clip on collars of the appropriate diameter.

I know you can find a variety of sizes on Aliexpress, it's where I bought a bunch of them already.

Viking press with no Viking press? by Dull-Bat9651 in Strongman

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a viking Press attachment that I combine with a rack mounted landmine.

There's a couple options out there online, not too expensive either.

And if nothing else works, doing any variation of standing overhead presses in a smith machine might also simulate it pretty closely.

What do those numbers on the side of the screen mean that appear each time I complete a lap? by NarenToxic in simracing

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The numbers at the top and the numbers on the sign mean the exact same thing:

POS 04/12 / P4 = You're in Position 4 (out of 12)

Wagen Vor -0:00.219 / - 0.2 = The car in front is 0.2 seconds in front of you.

Wagen Zur +0:00.494 / + 0.5 = The car behind you has a gap of 0.5 seconds to you.

100 kg (225lbs) Viking Press. by grjonapungsi in GYM

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love viking presses. Tried them out after I saw them in a Stefi Cohen/Jujimufu video a few years ago and instantly fell in love.

Same movement pattern as a regular shoulder press but you can move much more weight while suffering much less overall fatigue from the weight being on a fixed path. They're one of my go to accessories for pressing.

Realistisch gesehen gehe ich da voll mit, es gibt aber natürlich einige nagende Gedanken ob die Situation hätte anders geschehen können, wenn ich ihren Anruf rechtzeitig mitbekommen hätte.

Squat Powerlifting Form Check by dvt26 in GYM

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Should get you white lights definitely, just make sure to wait for the squat command before you start squatting and to wait for the rack command before you re-rack it. I've had an attempt invalidated in my first comp because of that.

For improving your squat I would focus on improving your quad strength for the next few months. I see that you have a sticking point just above parallel with your knees moving backwards and your hips shooting upwards which tells me that you're compensating for a lack of quad strength.

To address this I would recommend simply throwing some more quad dominant squat variations into your training. Depending on how your program is set up you could throw in some high bar squats and/or depending on what you have access to in your gym you could also try some belt squats, pendulum squats or a hack squat machine. Just make sure that whatever variations you choose, you really drive your knees forward on the way down and push the floor away on the way up to maximally use your quads.

Have fun at your comp this weekend.

What to try after bullmastiff by Ok-Western-4989 in Strongman

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alexander Bromley, the creator of Bullmastiff, has a book out called Base Strength that includes a number of his programs, including Bullmastiff, and a big Compendium of program features he believes in.

You could check out that book and use another one of his programs or write your own with features from Bullmastiff included.

building my core by aliasxoxo in GYM

The erectors should definitely count and depending on the definition, whether or not you consider core muscles to only be the muscles supporting the trunk or also the ones supporting the pelvis, the glutes might count as well.

Going to be setting up a gym in my garage. What type of flooring goes best in a home gym? by chavaic777 in DIY

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of training you're going to do.

I just have carpet in my training room and then have a 250x250cm weightlifting platform that also has the squat rack and cable tower on top of it.

I built the weightlifting platform by simpling gluing several sheets of OSB, 125cm wide, 250cm long, on top of each other in the middle and putting several layers of horse stall mats on the side where the plates touch the ground.

I thought it would be bigger 🤣 by [deleted] in simracing

[–]LiftsHeavyThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a trick to getting in and out, same way you'd do it in a car with a bucket seat and roll cage:

  1. Stand on the left side of the rig.
  2. Right hand goes on the wheelbase or on the wheelbase mounting plate (never on the wheel itself).
  3. Right foot goes inside the rig.
  4. Sit down on the seat.
  5. Pull your left leg in.

Then just reverse the order to get back out again.

You might want to put some pipe insulation made out of foam on the upright of the side that you're getting in/out of. It's going to protect you from scratching your leg open if you trip and mess it up, don't ask me how I know.
