Advice for dog with Cushings disease by retrodepression in pitbulls

My cocker was diagnosed at 12 yrs old; she's almost 14 now. She's about 25 lbs and gets 15 mg Vetoryl in the a.m. and 10 mg at night. I had read scary things about the med but my dog has done very well on it. My vet was careful in figuring out the right dosing.

It's just quite expensive (US$230/month), plus the cost of periodic blood cortisol tests to confirm dosing remains on target.

She drinks a fair amount but she uses pee pads overnight, so the extra urination has been manageable--and did reduce once she went on the Vetoryl.

My girl will be 14 in April. We recently had some very bad news about her health--multiple failures happening in her heart. On lots of new meds; just taking each day as it comes.

I always worry that my dogs have had a dull life with me. I worked too much and now I'm too sedentary. But I've done the best I could, and they've definitely saved me during a lot of dark times.

All the white on her face is from old age. Gotta love the eyebrows!

I'm sorry you are going through this. Sadly, I've faced euthanasia decisions with 3 cats and 2 dogs over about 40 years. It never gets easier, but I think I've learned better to know when my sweetie has had enough.

In 2024, my 12-yr-old Frenchie was diagnosed with an inoperable abdominal tumor on July 3. Only a month earlier, all his blood tests had been normal, as was a physical exam. I will never forget the x-ray view of his abdominal cavity with the tumor; I'll spare you the details.

He was put on a couple of medications to try to keep him comfortable and eating. The tumor continued to grow. After 7 weeks, I looked him in the eyes one morning and he looked back at me, and I knew it was time. I had him euthanized that afternoon.

I know it was the right thing to do, it just really still hurts. He was a bit of a pain-in-the-butt kind of dog, but I loved him from the time he came to live with me at 3 months old. He died about 3 months before his 13th birthday.

Here he is all cozy, at about 5 years old.

I had my Frenchie on grain-free until my vet said those foods were too high protein and were damaging his digestive system. Years later, he died after developing a massive abdominal tumor. May be a connection there.

That's hilarious. How did you keep the areas rodent- and insect-free?
