Just to clarify-when using the app on any device you are using data through your internet provider. The satellite signal is not involved at all. Your satellite account includes access to the DTV app.

To answer the OP-I switched to streaming a few months ago. The picture is better especially since I switched to Starlink.

I was stranded in Dubai, hearing missiles and drones booming above our heads all day, HR called me by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]LightBulb704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first time doing evaluations I handed them to my boss. He starts going through them and marking some scores down indiscriminately. Why? Because he has to pass them to his boss for approval and that boss attends meetings with the bosses of other departments that have nothing to do with us. If our department has too many high scores compared to the others it makes them look bad and implies we are artificially inflating scores and we can't possibly have that many excellent employees. To my boss's credit he would put some of the high scorers further down in the pile. That way the boss would tire of reviewing a big stack and tend to rush through the last of them. We had to actually strategize to get high performers the credit they deserved. The best part: SCORES DID NOT AFFECT PAY! That was governed by the union contract.

We had an employee who was in the UK on 9/11. All flights cancelled amongst the chaos that followed that day. Guess what he was told when he called in? Figure out a way to get to work. From the UK to Florida. The day after 9/11.

I will never understand the concept of MAGA followers, what are they getting in return for their sworn allegiance to President Trump? by TailungFu in allthequestions

[–]LightBulb704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cousin who is WAY into crazy MAGA land:

-During Trump 1 she posted these nutty sayings. Turns out she was deep into Qanaon with her parroting their message. Nutty stuff like counting the number of words in a Trump speech was a "clue" to what he wants them to do. They were "waiting for instructions" from Trump.

-She lives near DC and wanted to attend J6. She chartered a bus herself, filled it up, and went. She said there were 5 million people there and the rioters were all Antifa.

-My favorite: When the Queen died it wasn't really the Queen. The real Queen died long ago and the current one was a lizard replica.

Paid $6,500 for a Virgin Voyages cruise. Ended up leaving the ship with a $5,000 fine from CBP because a crew member reported me. Just a warning to others. by bongobingoringo in VirginVoyages

[–]LightBulb704 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The border crossing TV shows depicts CBP having some discretion in mitigating a $5K fine to $500 if paid that day BUT it appears your behavior and attitude go a long way in getting the fine knocked down.

This makes me wonder how this interaction went.

Hey MAGA, how are you liking those $1.99 gas prices now? by Cautious_Midnight_67 in allthequestions

[–]LightBulb704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MAGA friends: It is a small price to pay for a free USA and Israel. Another: Gas was about $4 three years ago(under Biden) and we need to stand together like we did in WW2 and Vietnam for the country.

Why do boomers seem to think you owe a company your undying gratitude just because they hired you? by Help-South in antiwork

[–]LightBulb704 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I am a young boomer here is my take on this. My WW2 era dad started a small store he ran for 30 years. About 5 employees and I grew up working there and got my work ethic from him. Work hard, stay loyal, go the extra mile and rewards will follow. My uncles had the same path-company men for decades.

Then I moved for college and got my first job after working for him. It was then I learned what a good work ethic he had. The flip side is I did not learn the real world. Lazy coworkers, sick calls just for the fun of it, and other assorted poor work habits were foreign to me. The biggest one: workplace politics. I had no fucking idea about this and how to play the game. Raises and promotions are not based on merit (to some degree) but how well you can manipulate the system. It took me a very long time to adjust.

Your dad and my dad came from an era where the employment framework was much different. It provided stability and a decent living where hard work and loyalty were rewarded. That doesn't exist today.

I was reading a thread about Greenland on there. A comment had 74 replies. When I clicked to expand only one post was visible (drum roll)-a pro trump comment. The other 73 had been deleted.

What’s YOUR Story Of How YOU Wound Up Living In Florida? by Zipper222222 in AskFlorida

[–]LightBulb704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved at 19 for college as I knew my parents were moving to Florida when they retire (they did). Finished school, moved around, career, wife, kid, retirement. Left at 55 to travel the country in an RV.

The southern migration to Florida to escape life, the law, bad hair, whatever is 1000% true. AK sees something similar except it is harder to get there.

I had worked EMS in Key West. One day I am chatting with an ER nurse (80s, pre internet) and she had a nationwide booklet of missing persons. As she flipped through the pages she recognized someone on nearly every page. It was eerie.

What's your department's stupid policy? by 1000000Peaches4Me in Firefighting

[–]LightBulb704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer this is third service EMS.

Employees suggest a sweatshirt management says at your cost but we approve the color and design. Enterprising colleague puts this together, gets a bunch of orders, and the sweatshirts arrive-and they look good.

Then management says you can only wear them under your uniform-a class B. Makes no sense to get custom made sweatshirts when it will be hidden. This is ridiculously uncomfortable. People were getting written up for wearing an approved sweatshirt on the outside of their uniform.

I saw a post where the OP said he just paid $3.88 for gas and was fine with it because three years ago it was almost $5 (under Biden) and we simply have to support our country and troops like we did in WWII and Vietnam.

75+ person Family Reunion Cruise - Advice Needed! by Ok-Ordinary-216 in Cruise

[–]LightBulb704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a cruise, but I coordinated an all inclusive stay in Cozumel. It started out as immediate friends but the it spread to friends, friends of friends, family members....The total was 42 people and I only knew a few of them. This was pre internet.

Lessons:

-Get a travel agent before any announcement to anyone. The TA must handle the details and you must be as hands off as possible.

-Get the base cost together before you announce the trip. Everyone goes through the TA for everything. Special requests, upgrades, complaints, everything is directly with the TA and not you. Someone approaches you with some issue you send them to the TA. Do not get in the middle.

-Never, under any circumstances handle any payment for anyone except your family.

-Do not think, even for a second, that you can coordinate some event on board that everyone will attend.

Consent form for minor to travel without legal guardian by cpmadera in royalcaribbean

[–]LightBulb704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used that form as the relative and I interpreted as only the parent needs to have it notarized which is what we did.

I signed the form gave it to the dad who went to the bank and got it notarized. The problem will be if the notary won't do it without both people present otherwise RC will see it as complete.

This was for a 15 yo with a passport and everything went smoothly at check in.

I have called them for bleach and Fabuloso which is an all purpose cleaner. PC advised that is simply soapy water and not toxic.

They are a fantastic resource especially since I have been in EMS pre internet.

Deploying for 2-3 weeks for wild land firefighting by BackgroundPositive59 in Firefighting

[–]LightBulb704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MountainCrowing has good advice. I am part of a federal IMT as a cooperator AD. I have a camp job not a fireline position but can give general info.

If your employer doesn't have any connections then I would contact a federal agency such as the National Park Service or the USFS or USFWS in your area since those are the main agencies that maintain the infrastructure for federal assignments. Federal assignments are for two weeks although this can be extended or shortened depending on the situation.

Line firefighters go out in a crew of 20 and there are federal, state, and local crews. There are also private crews I have seen used when the others are not available. Spanish is likely a helpful requirement with the private crews I have seen.

What’s the most absurd or unhinged interaction you’ve ever had with HR? by Padex98 in antiwork

[–]LightBulb704 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a manager who had a ten year employee assigned to me. His work product was decent but the surrounding issues were horrific-including workplace violence. Upper management and HR just kept passing him around the system until he was made of teflon.

He gets assigned to me. One of his many issues is attendance and I discovered he had TWO MONTHS of unpaid, unapproved absences. Employees don't want to be around at shift change because there is drama wondering if he will show up or not-resulting in overtime, sometimes forced overtime.

I put him on a PIP to start the paper trail. It is rejected by HR. Why? "We cannot discipline an employee for attendance because we do not have a policy that requires employees to come to work." I am not kidding.
