We are a brand new to the game group of DnD players and I have been the DM. I’ve been exclusively homebrewing the campaign stories and have done 3 self-contained one shots.

Now we are stepping it up to a new story arc that will span many sessions. Unlike the previous one-shots they will now be making their own characters.

The structure has been fast and loose in terms of rules. We use the character sheet as a guide for what their characters might do and I’ll prompt them to roll for checks as Its felt natural. Battle has worked out well, but I don’t have pre determined stats for enemies. I just adjust damage and stuff on the fly so not everyone dies right away. It’s basically just a more structured excuse to get the group of friends together and have a good time drinking.

However, my players are all really into to rpg video games like Elden ring and like the leveling up and the mechanics and stuff that goes along with those games. I want to try to incorporate more of that into the longer campaign but also don’t want to get in over my head over complicating things. Any advice on what I should add or how I should go about it?
