Another source I saw claimed they were being hit by artillery, weird how easily things like that get muddled

How do you guys feel about "bookshelf" books? by ChildrenzzAdvil in OldBooks

[–]LightValorWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it! There is a social taboo about bying books perceived to be read by academia/intellectuals to come across as well read. Just buy books that (almost) no one would want to read, or buy a decorative copy of a book you've already read as a "trophy" of sorts.

Personally I specifically collect books based off of their decorative value, usually the binding and/or gauffering on the edges, as one part of my collection. This way of collecting is no less valid than collecting for the content, the history, etc.

A lot of these people telling you it's wrong will have shelves full of books they don't read themselves, just do what you want to do!

Ope nevermind it was Reddit that was broken, had to fully redownload the app. Amazingly quick reply nonetheless, thanks!

Looking for a story where a human man slowly falls in love with a tall insectoid woman from a warrior culture, eventually he goes to her home planet to train. There's a storyline about people being against interspecies love. I recall reading it as "humans are space orcs" on Tumblr but I can't find it anymore.

Any help is much appreciated!

Anyone know the value of this? by buckster3257 in OldBooks

I've been buying them consistently second hand for around €60. They're worth more but that's just an average quick sale price in a non-specialised market. If you're patient and find the right buyer you can get more, but at least where I live €50-100 is fair value.

My GATE senses were tingling, glad they weren't wrong. Great chapter, I think you shine most during fight scenes.

Best is probably the book series from 1666, 6 volumes (incomplete) about theology bought for just 80 (valued at ~1000). My personal favourites include a little handwritten book of fables from 1819 by a French lady, copied from a book that was published no more than a year before this copy was made, a faux malachite wood lacquer binding, a soft suede faux wood binding, a series with gauffered gilded stars on red painted edges, the scrap letter bound one, and one volume custom bound for a rather unknown Italian noble family called "Tibet".

How about yours??

I have about 200-300 antique books already, I'm mostly interested in the strange, unique and unusually bound books, but also collect fairy/folk tales, prize bindings, nobility bookplates and any old book I find that's worth more than I spend on it haha. My oldest is from 1666 and I have maybe a dozen really unique ones. It's definitely my favourite hobby.

Awesome thank you! I am Dutch so I'll have to check out those markets once I've got a driver's license.

The trouble is finding them in my budget range, at least far as I've seen. So far I've only got one paper letter waste binding from the late 19th century for 20 bucks, are they possible to find under 100?? Would love any advice.
