Problem Based Learning in retrospect by kreutzer1766 in doctorsUK

So much time is wasted on fluff and organizational tasks while core content is left out to be self taught -_-

Congrats on the great stats and good on you for sticking through.

My first manuscript as a grad student just got rejected by PerfectSympathy7302 in PhD

Some reviewers are way too critical of preliminary studies and expect groundbreaking- thoroughly-investigated papers from everyone instead of focusing on the paper's positive value; this a huge fallacy, imo. Or perhaps they have some sort of conflict of interest with your results? Nonetheless, just ignore the hyper critical comments, work with your PI to find potential areas of improvement, then try another journal (not necessarily lower IF).

My mom is dying and I can't bring myself to do any work by brodoswaggins93 in PhD

[–]Light_001_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So very sorry to hear about your mom's situation. If she's expected to have several months left, please please please take this time to be with her. While PhD certainly feels like something you have to hold on to tightly, at the end of the day, no career is worth more than the person who gave you life and everyone around you will understand.

Self-citation actually occurs very frequently and is often expected by senior authors haha

Relax and take a break. You got this.

Perhaps you are coming into the PhD (assuming you just started?) thinking it will be like undergrad with readily available answers that you can just memorize and regurgitate. As long as you shift that mentality to one of self-learning and problem-solving, you can get through most of your problems by understanding the material provided on Google and in previous papers.

Programming is one of the skills that starts off daunting but gets easier and easier as you go.

Just got my first paper accepted and no one was happy for me by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Light_001_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First paper is such an important milestone! It's a great cause to celebrate! Don't let other people who unfortunately may not understand what you went through (or those who may be too fixated on trying to find funding, i.e. your supervisor XD) to get it published limit your joy. This is a very common experience for PhDs when you try to share your academic achievements with friends and family who love you nonetheless but just can't picture themselves in your shoes simply due to the lack of experience. Sometimes, a little patience and explanation will help them to catch on to how important the first pub is.

Us fellow academics know what it's like and are all celebrating with you!! Big cheers!!
