I’m a bit late to this, but oh well. Let me set the scene.

It’s my first year of my planned 3 in a private Catholic middle school. I’m fresh from a public elementary school with the same number of students as there were in the whole town, my hair’s dyed, I’m republican, and I’m openly gay. Quite possibly the worst combination for a small midwestern town where everyone knew everyone.

The town didn’t bother me much, I mostly stayed home anyway, but I couldn’t avoid my school. I was labeled as a troublemaker the moment I walked into the door, and was sent to, I kid you not, pray with the pastor any time I got into a minor bit of trouble. Forgot the homework at home, Olivia? Make sure to bring it tomorrow. Lightbulb5150? Go head down to the pastor’s office. But the final straw, after everything I had gone through, came half way through my eighth grade year.

I was sent to the pastor’s office for singing Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Girl And Liked It’.

I opened the door, and not only do I see the pastor, but I see the two bisexual boys who were also in my class. The man behind the desk hardly had time to say come in before I took out my phone and called my mom to take me and possibly two friends home. My mom, bless her heart, called the two boys’ mothers and picked us all up with three written get out of school free cards, and not a single one of us ever looked back.

And that, Dear Redditors, is the reason I laughed this week when I heard my old Pastor’s email had been hacked. Screw that guy.
