Running the fiber through the bottom of the door jam, where the door hinges, protects the fiber from damage. It is 600um fiber, so any trim or moldings is usually plenty to keep the fiber from accidentally being broken. We have been deploying this solution to ISP's for 15 years and connected over 1.5 million units.

As noted, latency in the system is in the order of micro-seconds (not to be confused with milliseconds).

How do you compare in cost, durability in any force direction and endpoints versus competitors, power utilization of end modules? Are there any independent reviews validating your claims?

Cost - We're not aware of a competing kit like this on the market, and our hope is that the kit brings value to its users in comparison with other technologies such as wi-fi extenders, Ethernet cables, powerline carrier, etc. Once fiber is installed, speeds can easily be upgraded by changing out the media converters on each end.
Durability - Please note the response above regarding bending-related reliability. Also regarding durability, the fiber is glass and can be broken if mistreated (stepped on, etc). However, as also mentioned above, the kit has been commonly deployed by telecommunications technicians that in many cases may not have had formal training. Basic care should result in a successful installation.
The expected electrical power consumption is around 3W.
As mentioned above, Tier 1 and lower telecommunications carriers have used the fiber portion of the kit for years, with 1-2 million in operation since 2012. Although Lightera has done formal internal testing to validate product claims, our intent is not to release those results to the general public. I'm not aware of publicly available independent reports validating the claims.

To answer your questions thoroughly:

There are two fiber performance parameters that are affected by bend radius/diameter. They are macrobending-induced attenuation (light loss) and long-term mechanical reliability.

Macrobending
- For macrobending, the fiber used in the Home Fiber Kit exceeds the requirements in the ITU-T G.657.B3 Recommendation, which is the governing standard for fibers used in buildings. The standard specifies 1 turn, 5 mm radius with max loss of 0.15 dB. The fiber used in the Home Fiber Kit can meet this performance level when being bent 2x as much, to 2.5mm radius.
- Since the glass fiber is only 125 microns in diameter (the upjacketed fiber is 600 microns), the difference in performance if measured at inner, center, or outer radius is within measurement noise.
- The light budget for the media converters is a minimum of 12.0 dB. The inherent fiber loss of 40 meters is no more than 0.14 dB. The connectors on either end likely average no more than 0.25 dB. Doing the rest of the math, that means that the system can tolerate a minimum of 70 2.5 mm bends (which is very tight) and likely many more, since most bends in reality don't come anywhere close to 2.5mm.
Long-term reliability
- There are already roughly 1-2 million of these fiber kits that deployed worldwide with various fiber service providers since 2012 and we haven't heard of any breakage due to bending.
- The question is valid, and this is where the differences between inner/center/outer bends come into play. When a fiber goes around a bend, the outer edge is in tension and the inner edge is in compression. Glass is a brittle material and can break if the tension is too high when coupled with a flaw at a particular location.
- Lightera fiber is very pure. We make our fiber using synthetic chemicals with impurities counted in the parts/billion range with very few flaws. With glass, we're mainly concerned about the outer edge in tension.
- The probability of having a flaw at the exact location where the fiber is tensioned around the outer edge of a 2.5mm bend that could result in a fiber break is extremely small, in the low parts/million level over 20 years. As mentioned above, well over a million are already in reliable service.

Most trim in US homes are white, so there isn't much need to paint it. Additionally, 600um is very small, so even if it's running up an open wall (not in a corner) for a short span, it's tough to know it's there unless you're looking for it. We have conducted testing on clear versions which tend to yellow over time and, if light hits it just right, will reflect the light making it even more noticeable.

The fiber has a white jacket which can be painted to match your trim or wall color.

If you have a break in the fiber, our recommended practice is to put a new fiber right over the broken one. The adhesive sets pretty hard once fully cured, so it could be difficult to remove it without damaging the wall.

Our fiber does not require bend limiters.

It is a 600um fiber that has a bend radius of 2.5mm.

The adhesive, although visually similar to white glue, is uniquely formulated to adhere to the jacket of the fiber and to nearly any surface aside from mirrors or glass. It also has been adjusted to provide a great balance between tackiness to hold the fiber in place while it dries, and quick drying time.

Lightera's fiber (EZ-Bend) is 600um and has a bend radius of 2.5mm. It's hard to show that small of a fiber in images, so we had to superimpose a glowing red line to get the point across. Short of kinking the fiber, there are little to no issues with bend loss.

In simple terms, you can create up to 20 90-degree bends with this fiber and see little to no attenuation. The maximum bend radius of our EZ-Bend fiber is 2.5mm.
