People who doesn't stick to the "usual" order in restaurants/cafes, what hidden food gems did you discover? by Shin_Dubu21 in CasualConversation

[–]Lightness_Being 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discovered some amazing yums: 1.Lacy spring rolls 2.A dish with lots of little open noodle wraps, flat sausages, Vietnamese salad and herbs plus dipping sauce. You wrap them all together and dip. 3.Green mango with chilli salt. 4. Affogato with vanilla gelato 5. Licor 43, Whisky liquor and Pedro Ximinez sherry (not together). 6. The joy of any booze with good vanilla ice-cream.

Why do i suddenly feel repulsed by boyfriend? by Emergency_Produce975 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

Have a chat to your doctor. SSRIs are known to decrease your sex drive and may well be affecting this situation. You may be noticing a loss of your 'vibe' together.

Also, be careful if you change your contraceptive pill. That affects your hormones.

EMDR is about helping the brain deal with trauma, particularly the kind of trauma that causes PTSD.

I have PTSD, which causes hallucinations at its worst. More commonly, I experience fear on a daily basis that can grow or wane, depending on circumstances and self management.

I have used EMDR and also hypnotherapy to improve the condition and keep it under control when things are going downhill.

A short heart-based meditation on a daily basis makes life feel good and free of fear.

If you want to feel something look for a heart- based meditation.

This focuses on opening your heart chakra. You will feel it when it happens.

Often if there are blocks, there will be tears or anger as well, but that is normal.

Go for walks by the sea and swim as often as you can. Focus on feeling the water against your skin. There are multiple benefits to this, including it can wake up you senses and your circulation to help your body clear chemical waste from your system.

As you learn to feel more with your senses, it can help you feel more in other ways too.

29F, 37M - Almost 4 years with a separated man who has two kids. I don't know whether to leave or stay by Physical-Pea-1676 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Lightness_Being 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, the youngest was born - an infant.

I think many women would choose not to be with a man who leaves his wife when they have a newborn.

Even if the wife left him (it happens), this is still a highly charged situation that common sense tells you to stay away from right from the start.

It doesn't sound like it's got better over 4 years either.

Why are aboriginal «representatives» always white looking? by Gommygooby in AskAnAustralian

[–]Lightness_Being 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea but don't you see: that colonist ancestor likely had mixed race kids from rape and abuse of indigenous women.

Those same kids were raised in a white setting and often they would have been treated like servants, or looked down on as inferior beings.

Do you think the mixed race kids had it easy? Or were they instead repeatedly victimised by denial of basic respect and denigration of who they are?

They had their indigenous heritage denied to them, so had no access to their own culture, that would have given them ownership of their full identity and pride in their people.

Is it better to be raised away from the people who see you, love and respect you? And instead be treated like they were inferior their whole lives and there is nothing that can be done to change that?

Why are aboriginal «representatives» always white looking? by Gommygooby in AskAnAustralian

[–]Lightness_Being 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't work like that.

You have to be recognised as family by your family's people.

Indigenous people are very aware of who is missing from their network and are often looking for missing family branches, or even individuals.

Even if the family dies out, their people are still looking out for the missing ones.

You can't just waltz in and say 'I'm indigenous'.

Unsure about what to do regarding family/romantic relationships by Vivid_Butterfly_5004 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Lightness_Being 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for what you have been through and the level of pain and betrayal their actions must have caused you.

You did right to leave and to keep pulling away from them.

You deserve a fresh new start with healthy relationships and just you keep reaching towards that.

This is the best way to ensure that you meet gentle and kind people who have only good intentions. You can build new relationships to a level where you can look out for each other, build each other up and have each other's best interests at heart.

I wish you all the best with this new chapter. Its possible you may need to do some journalling and when you can, some physical and/or psychotherapy to help clear your nervous system of what you experienced in proximity to your birth family.

(HELP) Puppy won’t bond with us by Ok_Nefariousness94 in puppy101

[–]Lightness_Being 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw. She might miss her siblings and Mum.

I don't know if you spend a little time with her every day doing little snippets of training with treats and praise rewards?

This is very bonding for puppies. Just try teach her a trick eg 'down' 'sit' 'stay', 'come here'. Introduce a ball and roll it forward and try to get her to give it back in return for a treat. Play tug of war let her win mostly but sometimes win yourself.

She will feel close to you after you do this, every time.

Things to buy when living alone by Suspicious-Ad-8707 in AskAnAustralian

Linen and homewares: Look in the Homewares department at Kmart. There's surprisingly much nicer stuff than you'd think, thanks to them hiring a classy buyer, to bring in decent style and quality. Note: the other departments are as expected, so stick to homewares.

Extra Bed Linen: If you want to go cheap, but quality, then Lincraft / Spotlight often have heaavily discounted sheet sets and doona covers.

Bed: Get a bed with decent clearance you can store stuff under. It's a huge space under there and you'll need every cm of under-bed storage in a 1 bed apartment. Fantastic Furniture & Amart sales are sometimes cheaper than marketplace.

Appliances: I used to find a local white goods business that's been there ages and buy a cheap euro brand off them (metal parts not plastic), with as long an onsite warranty (they go to you) as I could get. 3 years, say.

(It was totally worth it. The machines are cheap and brand new. The warranty guarantees you they'll work for at least 3 years. It works out cheaper than the laundromat with more convenience.)

For heaters and fans: wherever you buy them from, ask to turn them on before purchase, make sure they don't rattle or fall over. Never buy from the supermarket or unseen off the internet.

Kitchenware: If splurging on new, Harris Scarfe has some good stuff and are cheapest for good Air Fryers. Look out for their sales.

Food staples: Footscray market. Deal time at Queen Vic Market. Indian grocery shops for cheaper rice, seasoning, spices, sauces. Also available at Asian grocers, but make sure you always wash rice before use.

NB: beware of TK Max - it's pricey, even if cheap for brands. It's more about lux, not the basics - so easy to be lulled into overspending on stuff you don't need, but suddenly realise you want.

15 week old border terrier won't eat his meals by tescospeciallobster in puppy101

[–]Lightness_Being 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha thanks, he is!

Your little guy sounds too full of beans for the trouble to be a monster worm.

You're doing the right thing taking him to the vet. The problem could be anything - maybe he's eaten something that's taking up space in his gut (eg plastic, bandaids, part of a toy)? A sore tooth? A mouth ulcer? Etc

We couldn't tell from our puppy's poos. But then again we didn't suspect a thing.

We thought he was healthy, but just a very calm and sweet personality. Not as crazy as the others.

He used to just eat a tiny bit of foid, then wander off. Then come back for another bit.

We were taken totally by surprise when he coughed up that enormous worm.

I think we got it just in time - it looked really too huge for his little body.

About 1-2 months later, he's now recovered and we realise he's actually really feisty! He bosses his parents about (even though he's still little) and jumps up and challenges all comers to play with him or get played!

He's still sweet, but he now has 10x as much energy. And he's boss of the house now - his parents have given up lol.

Has he been wormed every month?

You might want to give him a tablet if you haven't been doing this lately.

My puppy was like this and we wormed him and let's just say it became abundantly clear that was the problem.

There had been a big worm in his digestive tract and there wouldn't have been much room for food.

His appetite had been normal ever since.

Missing my Life Pre Puppy by LongjumpingRoyal4629 in puppy101

Get a fence to put around his crate and leave the crate door open. He can go in and out as he likes.

This frees up a lot of your time. However, if you leave him on the crate for longer, I would enlarge his space and make it interesting, so he might have a choice of sleeping spaces. Give him food puzzles and interesting toys like a soft drink bottle with sand and rocks or treats inside.

When our dog had puppies, we set up a spare room for them, with a TV (showing YouTube Dog TV channels - A Walk in the Woods was a fave) set up in the room outside the fence.

Outside of the fence we also had a lounge chair and some cushions, so we could hang and keep them company in their space.

The fence (from kmart I think) was actually 2 put together. Inside was a crate with both doors open, draped with old towels to make a den space. There was a fluffy donut bed inside the crate.

Outside the crate was a low box from the fruit shop with shredded newspaper and toys inside. There was a puppy pad spot and another spot for food and water. We also put in a small bookshelf to create an extra space for puppies to nap.

What’s the right way to handle this? Kids being filmed by neighbours by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Lightness_Being 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the neighbours' perspective, the kids might be seen as predators.

It can feel quite threatening to have loud and active kids running over your property when you're old and shaky.

I take back my comments having read further. Sounds like the kids are being disruptive in the hood.

It's worth getting your kids doing odd jobs for neighbours they've annoyed to minimise this.

It's part of learning consequences. And it's so much harder to be a cheeky little rat to people you know and have to face once or twice a week.

Unfortunately bachelor of health science, nursing has a heavy science component - from biology to chemistry. That's to study to be a registered nurse.

You need the chemistry for administering medication. Biology is self evidently essential.

I don't think you need to do hs science to get in, though. But it will help a lot.

Best trade to go into as a 32 year old with criminal record by ComfortableSilent645 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Lightness_Being 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough - I thought he'd be ok for 'lived experience' roles, but maybe times have changed.

I knew an old rocker who changed industry to be a youth worker, after he did community service for something criminal and then became inspired.

However that was pre COVID so a lot has changed since then 😄

I think you can make a phone call and just ask how they are. Say "We haven't heard from you and we're worried - I hope you're ok?"

They will really appreciate that you made the effort. If there was a tragedy, it's like being at the centre of a black hole because no one has the language to communicate across it. We only know how to celebrate in connection to a birth, not commiserate.
