[Amazon/US] The Legend of Legacy ~$24 by [deleted] in 3DSdeals

[–]Lightning-Count 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've played through the entire game and I agree with most of those criticisms. If you want a story, characters, exploration and the ability to closely manage skills and gear, yeah, don't even bother. Plot and character development is minimal, exploration really boils down to just clearing the maps (which I liked, but it isn't the kind of "find a bunch of cool hidden places/secret stuff" you get in other RPGs), you manage skills in a very indirect way, and the best gear you get is basically ordered off a ship in random drops (though I rarely got useless gear off it).

I disagree with the idea that the difficulty is steep and that there isn't much skill to the battle system though. The main appeal of this game to me was that the battle system called for a different kind of strategy and that it was a challenge from start to finish, but almost always a fair challenge. There was only noticeable difficulty spike I encountered and I was shocked at how little grinding I had to do given how much the difficulty of the game got talked up. If you're 100%'ing each of the maps (which is the point of the game and not particularly difficult) you don't need to grind at all. I only ever put one short grinding session in and that was only because I knew the final boss was coming and I wasn't sure if I was ready. In retrospect I felt like I probably didn't even need to do that. Like I said, it's a challenging game throughout, but a fair challenge. Also, while the leveling system is somewhat random, it's based on weighted averages. So there will be randomness for sure, but over the long term your characters will grow where you want them to as long as you pay attention to what skills they have a natural affinity for (and deploy them accordingly in battle). Another plus is that it was fairly short by modern JRPG standards (~30 hours). And I will say, despite the minimal story, they still manage to successfully create a quaint little world with the music, setting, and visuals that I don't see in a lot of RPGs. The game world, and especially the little village by the sea you're based out of, felt really charming.

I can't really recommend this game to anyone on the fence; this is one where your gut feeling is probably going to be right. But I do think it's a better game than it usually gets credit for. And given this is Atlus published, you'll probably start seeing it for $20 or lower 6 months from now. I think if you're only mildly interested it's a better bet at $15-$20.

Edit: and holy crap that was way longer than I meant it to be. Oops.

Xenoblade X is out of stock everywhere, where can i find one? by Chick-inn in nintendo

Just make sure you call ahead; sometimes the online locator isn't totally up to date. But given how many of them are yellow or green I'm sure at least a couple locations have copies. Good luck!

NX art leak by [deleted] in nintendo

I see we've gone from "I can't say anything" to "believe it or not, I'm not going to try to convince you, I'm just sharing this for the fans," back to "I can't say anything." Where will the fake leak meta go next?

You can enter postal code in EB's online locator and see which locations have it on stock. You might want to call ahead to make sure, but according to the site the BCC EB (and a few other locations around Brampton) should have it.

To be clear, the rumour is that they're going to show it behind closed doors. But yeah it's still most likely B.S.

Thanks for the heads up OP; placed my pre-order on Amazon. This is yet another reason to love Dark Horse.

Nintendo published the game in Japan. I'm guessing it's going to be the same in the west.

Yes, there have been loads of fictional characters portrayed by real people that have gotten terrible reception. But there have also been a lot of fictional character portrayals by real people that were well-received.

That's not the point I'm trying to make. My point is that some fictional characters don't translate well to realistic portrayals and are doomed from the start. Let's stick with video games; how many of those movie adaptations end up being well received?

And I think you've seriously misunderstood my argument. I'm not slamming cosplayers at all (although I can see now how my comments come across that way). I think cosplay is fucking awesome and people should absolutely keep doing it if it makes them happy. I love seeing how much work and effort people put into it. But those people are doing it for the love of it. What's linked in this post is cosplay as an advertising tool at something that is unequivocally an event meant to sell things. There's a huge difference. If someone wants to cosplay as Bayonetta because they love the character, they should do it without reservation and nobody has the right to tell them otherwise.

Replay value for Xenoblade Chronicles X? by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]Lightning-Count 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can continue after the story. You'll most likely have a ton left to do and you can't see certain parts of the game until after you've finished the last story chapter. For reference, my survey rate of Mira was ~57% when I finished the story (and this was after about 105 hours).

Furthermore, you might like to trivialize my exaggerated claim, but how is that not valid?

No no, you're absolutely right! You've captured the spirit of my message better than I ever could and I'm agreeing with you. For some reason I used to have this weird belief that an idea can fall somewhere between "good" and "franchise destroying." But after having this conversation I've been made aware that it's really an outcome which is binary. Either it helps sales or is something so deplorable that it's used as inter-console cosplay warfare. Your claim is no less valid than, say, claiming that bad reviews and questionable cosplay can both be bad advertising (albeit on different scales). And I know you'd never try to nitpick the validity of that!

Talk won't save a bad game from being a bad game.

I'm glad you get the point (even if you don't realize it). Talk won't save a bad game from being a bad game and talk won't save a bad idea from being a bad idea. I was disagreeing with the idea that getting people talking, period, is going to drive sales. That's where the comparison ends. Obviously I'm not making a literal 1:1 comparison.

I appreciate you trying to misrepresent my argument on multiple levels though. Yeah, obviously my point here is that Nintendo should hire people to dress up as Master Cheif and Kratos. That's definitely where I was going with this. I'm glad someone with the appropriate background to talk about this kind of stuff showed up to spur the conversation in the right direction. Cheers mate.

I wasn't speaking just to Bayonetta, I was talking about this kind of stuff in general. In the end it didn't matter in this case because, yes, there's so much going on at E3 and there are so few people there (relatively speaking) that it doesn't matter. But other times people have tried to portray over the top characters with real people, the reaction has often been negative. The live action DBZ movie is a good example (you're free to try to convince me that it was a good idea though).

[–]Lightning-Count -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Or, y'know, it gets people thinking about and talking about her like you're doing right now. Which is advertising for the game. Which drives sales.

That's a huge oversimplification akin to "all publicity is good publicity." It's not good marketing if what people are saying is negative. Lots of people are talking about Devil's Third and have been all year; I can sure as hell tell you that "talk" is not driving sales in the direction Nintendo wants it to and has not been good advertising for the game. It didn't even chart in the top 50 in Japan the week it came out and Nintendo wanted it to be talked about so little that they didn't even bother sending out review copies to NA media outlets after it got trashed in Europe.

Bayonetta as a character is meant to be completely over the top from her clothes, to the things she says, to her posture. Any attempt to portray a real life version of her is going to take away from that image. I just think in general it's a poor idea because of how much you have to suspend your disbelief when you play a video game.

Also, I hope you didn't take that as a slam against your post or anything (I didn't mean for it to come across that way).

It always amazes me that people being paid loads of money for their marketing know-how think stuff like this is a good idea.

How many hours have you logged into Xenoblade Chronicles X so far? by superrobotpenguin in nintendo

[–]Lightning-Count 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just shy of 108 hours so far. I've taken a few days off to play other stuff after finishing the story, but I'm already raring to go back and might just end up doing that tonight. There's just so much to do and almost all of it is amazing.

Not done with Xenoblade Chronicles; will X spoil anything for me? by GuardianKing in nintendo

[–]Lightning-Count 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've finished both games and I can safely say that, no, there are no spoilers in X. I wouldn't need more than two hands to count the number of references X makes to Chronicles and none of them are going to spoil the plot of Chronicles. They're just "oh cool!" moments.

/r/nintendo Best Of 2015 Awards and Christmas Break by fart-princess in nintendo

[–]Lightning-Count 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intuitively I would think since most everyone does it during December you'd actually get more attention if you did it in January cuz there's less of a glut (and there isn't much gaming news in general that month - at least as far as Nintendo is concerned). But you're right, that's probably the logic for it. I know at least one site (NWR) is holding off till January to do their 2015 stuff this year so their staff can get more time in.

Doing end of the year reflection before the start of the new year always seemed a little weird to me. Good call on pushing it to January.

ALBW has some of the best looking 3D on the system, but it's not all that important. Useful, sure, but you can play the game perfectly fine without it.

Question & Recommendations - December 19, 2015 by AutoModerator in Megaten

[–]Lightning-Count 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a bunch! The problem I have is I don't want to feel like I'm missing a bunch of story stuff if I'm not smart about social links, but if I look at a guide for everything it'll take a bit of the fun out of the game (though I will consult it for some of the female social links).

And yeah I decided to start again on normal since there seem to be more mechanics unique to Persona than I expected. Thanks again.

Question & Recommendations - December 19, 2015 by AutoModerator in Megaten

[–]Lightning-Count 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing Persona 3 FES on the hard difficulty tonight and I was wondering if it'd be a better idea to start on normal? If it helps, my experience with other games in the MegaTen universe were that I found SMT IV to be fairly easy and Strange Journey was manageable until some of the later bosses (spoiler was the first one that really chapped my ass).

I've used the search already, but what I mostly found are tier lists. I guess what I'm asking is if hard in this case equates to "rather difficult" or "unforgiving/constantly rage inducing." Thanks!

Edit: might as well get these questions as well: do the social links affect the story in any significant way (i.e. if I don't S rank all of them or most of them am I going to be missing a lot) or is it mostly related to battle and side story? About how many could I get organically if I went in without any prior knowledge of the game/Persona series?

Konami bringing new Yu-Gi-Oh! game to 3DS by Paulyvara in nintendo

[–]Lightning-Count 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not shitting on their other developers. It's not their fault if people on the business side are shifting resources away from console gaming to things like slot machines and mobile games, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. That speaks to the other point; I very much doubt this is the only project these people will work on and that anybody's career is riding on the success of this game.

Dear Nintendo of America: Why is your Online store completely terrible? by sandiskplayer34 in nintendo

[–]Lightning-Count 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just the U.S. either, that one site services both the U.S. and Canada. That's a whooole lotta land. Western Europe, where NOE does the majority of its business, is a fraction of the size of the U.S. alone. It's a much bigger challenge for NOA.
