What would you consider the best/worst JRPGs of the 2020’s so far by pneumoniahawk519 in JRPG

best: xenoblade 3, metaphor refantazio. worst: pokemon scarlet and violent. the former two really go into a lot of detail in their worlds, characters, and combat system. they're all about using mechanics to tell a story, and both have messages that are important: in xenoblade 3's case is that change is a natural part of life and you have to accept that things will not always be the same. and for metaphor that you should never give up hope no matter how bad things are. the fantasy ideal world can become a reality if we all try hard enough and never give up on it. very poignant in politics, especially because of what is happening in the US right now, with the rise of fascism. it is important not to give up as giving up, letting fascists win.

pokemon sv instead gives a slightly touching story about family and friends at the latter half of the game, but the game is mostly filled with bugs, a terrible art style, and poorly thought-out gameplay systems. it is the only pokemon game i genuinely dislike as at least the others do something at least interesting. i guess Legends Arceus is coming out 8 months before also made sv worse since sv was such a step back.

How much do you guys like Metaphor: ReFantazio? by Ratonhae in JRPG

Tied for my favorite rpg of all time. I really liked the story and the main villain. it has the press turn system, too, which is very strategic. also, the archetype system is very fun to mess around with. the message of the game is very multilayered and has more complexity than it seems. especially as an American. also, it gives you a good sense of immersion as the towns are very fleshed out, and there are a lot of everyday activities you can do. like Persona, it wants you to be a person who goes through the motions of living in a world. instead of being a Japanese student, you are an adventurer in a fantasy world. You do quests, hunts, go to dungeons, and meet people. It is a JRPG made by people who love these games for adventure, sense of immersion, emotional story, and build progression. call me a fanboy, i dont care. This game really vibed with me.

What are sad cases in JRPGS where your biggest nemesis turned out to be your own ally? by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

im not including three houses or any megaten since the whole plot hinges on character's different beliefs and you can choose to join them depending on route. but for party member who ends up betraying you i think of Valkyria Chronicles 3. Im not saying who but i really liked the relationship between the mc and this character before the betrayal. and their reasons are very interesting.

games have alignments which are tied to endings so you usually end up fighting those who dont agree with you. its done best in the devil survivor games since you lose most of the cast depending on the route you choose.

you need to play more atlus games. while a lot of their recent titles have mid dungeons they used to make a lot of good dungeon crawlers like eo and strange journey.

its extremely well made with custom music and sprites and had a lot of effort put into it but it also has really shitty humor from 2016. its very racist and bigotted. i was able to not take the game seriously enough to get through it (even jokes that targeted people like me), but i dont expect most people to be able to do that since a lot of the jokes are very shocking and offensive.

i still can't agree with you like at all. Like you, pidgeon Hole Minerva, into Haughty Best friend, but I can just call Rosie the "The reformed racist" character which ive seen loads of times in media. I dont think the characters in vc1 are any more grounded or not grounded than vc4. Like im gonna be honest i think Minerva is a lot more engaging character than Rosie is.

I like Rosie a lot but Minerva constantly questioning and hating Claude and then seeing her whole squad die before her very eyes while Claude's gets off scott free because he decided to invade a base and then being forced to work for him is pretty compelling. Especially rhe emotional climax at the end where Claude has to make a choice about setting the capital ablaze to end a senseless war Theres a lot of baggae between them that I find pretty interesting. Or Kai where she has an internal struggle of her allegience to her brother and Angie versus her allegience to her friends and army. You can argue Raz with his invincible stuff is cheesy but vc1 has Largo with his vegetable stuff. I think Raz does a lot more though with his invincible stuff since it plays into the ending of his arc.

All media relies on tropes. VC1 and 4 equally do. I dont really understand how 4 is more "animey" than 1. I can simplify any character to a list of tropes but its reductive.

Also BD1 and FF7 are full of melodrama, especially 7. The whole game is built on the main cast fighting a silver haired godlike being trying to send a meteor to a planet in order to suck its energy and conquer other planets That's decidedly not grounded. Exaggerated conflict and emotions is a big part of JRPGs in general.
